I am planning a trip with my buddy out to Colorado from Illinois next summer, and I was wondering if any of you Colorado members could be so helpful as to recommend any trails to go on or stay off of.We both have IFS and are planning to wheel the trails near Silverton. We are also looking to do some fly-fishing while out there as well on the Animas.Any sugestions/recommendations are welcome!
Thanks

i'm not from colorado, but me and a buddy of mine took with 2000 taco up a bunch of different trails with his stock truck. we were near buena vista though, i don't know if that is close to you or not. the good part it the locals are usually very helpful in letting you know where to go and what you can do, thats just what we did. sorry i can't be more helpful.

Around Silverton....Ophir Pass (easy-moderate), Imogene Pass (easy-moderate), Black Bear Pass (difficult - one way), Engineer pass (moderate), Cinnamon Pass (easy-moderate), Animas Forks (easy-moderate). Just a few of the more well know, well traveled trails. Check out www.mycolorado.org for some good trail descriptions, pictures, and useful links for trail conditions.

Pikipsee Gulch. (Spelling is way off) I ran this trail during my summer vacation while I was out visiting my parents. It is up out of Silverton. It was a beautiful ride with some somewhat challenging obstacles. I grew up close to Silverton and never get tired of going up there. If you go any where in the Ouray, Silverton, Durango area you will have a worth while time. There are some pics of the Silverton area on my webpage under wheelin. Sorry no pics of the pikipsee obstacle. Everybody was to busy spotting and watching. There are plenty of great scenery shots though.

Depending on what time of year Black bear may still be unpassable on the Telluride side because of snow.

Hey the more the better, especially if they are TTORA members! :D
If you really want to got let me know for sure, and I will keep you informed of the dates we are planning and other details.Maybe we could kinda make it a Midwest
Toyota trip or somethin' like that, considering there really isn't much of an Illinois chapter right now(Sorry guys!).I am not sure of Missouri, you guys have an active group?

Thanks for posting the link, Breathegood.
Sco, you can drive all the roads in that region as your truck sits now. All you need to do is pick which ones, and when to go. Poughkeepsie offers the only challenge, but it also has an easy bypass of sorts. Not sure how long you're planning to be in the area, but most of the main trails could be run in a three day period.
As for when to go, getting there early in the season right after a number of them open (usually late June) is incredibly awesome to see all the snow still hanging around on the peaks and basins. If you want to catch the wildflowers, plan to be there around July 25. This would be the ideal time to go as all the roads have been open for awhile by that time. Of course, even after the flowers fizzle out in early August, it still rocks.
Have a great trip out, and if you need additional details, don't hesitate to ask, though I'm sure there are more than enough locals on here that could help you out.

Darren, back from Canada eh? How was the trip? I'd been missing the weekly scenery updates while you were away. How are the 4.88's & lockers working out for you? I did read your comments about the gears, but don't think I've seen any comments about your trail adventures since being locked at both ends.

Breathegood, cool to hear I have a frequent visitor! Thanks! But yes, I've been back for a month and a half at this point. That trip was awesome to say the least. I'll definitely head back up there in the next 2-3 years. There will be an extensive trip report at some point, but that is a ways away yet.
The gears and lockers are doing well. Nothing really new to add about them, though.

I'd be interested in hosting you turkeys :D Holy Cross is also hella fun as is all the crazy chit up in Buena Vista (Iron Chest and Carnage). But I gotta say SW Colorado has some downright insane scenery as Breathgood noted. Here is a nice wheelstand of my old rig on Poughkeepsie

Nice, I went on the left side of the obstacle up the rock. I didn't know what was on top and ended up turning to the right when I got to the top and almost rolled sideways. I ended up backing part way down and going up further on the left. Sure would of sucked to roll with all the people that were there watching.
