View Full Version : "05 vibration in first gear, 6 speed?

When I picked up my '05 Taco, I asked the dealer if the slight vibration was normal when starting out in first gear with my 6 speed. The response was "yeah...but it'll go away with time". Well it's now 6 months later and it's actually gotten worse.
I'm trying to find out if any one else is experiencing this....because it really feels like something is out of balance....it could be as simple as the idle air/fuel mixture or clutch.....but these are all guesses.....and the dealership hasn't sold to many of the 6 speeds, so their Tech.s are at a loss if it's a design issue or if something is actually out of order.
Anyone else experience this?

I would Try another dealer. I took My 4runner is since my VSC light kept comming on, one dealer just reset it, and of course it came back on about 20 minutes later. I took it to another on in Socal and they replaced a sensor, and i have not had one problem since then.

Anything w/ a manual transmission will vibrate a little bit when starting off. Unless by vibrate you mean that it shakes violently as if you're not giving it enough gas when starting off, but you actually are giving it enough gas. If that's the case, then yeah, you might wanna have that checked out.

Doesn't seem to matter if I give it more gas or not....it vibrates like crazy shaking the whole truck until it gets moving along and I shift into second.

can you feel the clutch slipping any?

Sounds like a clutch issue.

I have the 6 speed, smooth in all gears.

No....no clutch slippage....
Thanks for the feedback....it sounds like a clutch issue to me too! Or at least something that is out of balance at low RPM's in the drivetrain!
Mine is smooth as well. I have an 05 6-speed

Mine vibrates a little and I have a auto. I also have a clunkiness feeling when coming to a complete stop and acelerating from a stop.

I'm gonna go w/ the throwout bearing..... Just a random uneducated guess ;)!

Check for a loose or broken mount, if that's not it, I'd take it in to the dealership!

I have an 05 6 spd and it started out with a little bit of a vibration. New truck jitters but after I drove from Co to Fl, never had the problem again. Don't know what to tell you.

Actually sounds like some oil may have got on the Clutch and it might be chattering.

Well...it seems all I could get Toyota to do, was to get the factory REP out to drive and check it out. According to him the pinion angle has changed with the lift installation.....along with the "wider and taller tires". They also went as far as dropping the driveshaft and checking the u-joints...and low and behold the front one was to tight....which probably explains the vibration I felt prior to doing the lift.
Anyway, I put a floor jacket under the rear pumpkin and watched the rear end move quit a bit as I jacked it up. I had assumed that the after market springs I installed would handle the axle wrap issues (as it has in the past with the Fords I've lifted). That doesn't seem to be the case....so this weekend I'll start by installing pinion angle shims to try and correct that issue and then see just how bad the axle wrap is. I suspect I'm going to have to get a traction bar to assist that rear end....but I'll wait to see how the shims do first.
Most obvious lesson learned this far is.....don't do any mods if you have any problems with your new vehicle....until after you've gotten the factory to correct those problems :o

Well....now I'm really begining to wonder about modifying a Tacoma. I haven't seen anyone else posting....so I'm beginning to believe I'm the only one with the problems that are starting to pop up.
Now I've developed a oil leak at the transfer case output shaft. The pinior angle shims helped marginally....but the vibration is still there. The dealership won't touch it now with out a factory Rep. present to review and either give it a THUMBS UP or THUMBS DOWN......I'm just about ready to give them a finger...forget thumbs.
Obviously the vibration that was there from day one has become worse to such an extent that I now have a leak (only 8,000 miles on it). I'm beginning to believe that the carrier bearing for the driveshaft is just plain to loose and when there is a serious load (like driving a steep incline) the vibration becomes very pronounced. You can feel it marginally while on a flat surface....but you hit a good hill in first or second and hold her at about 1,500 RPM, she'll vibrate enough to make things really shake throughout the truck.
No it's not a slippery clutch....it's either something wrong with the transfer case or something to do with the drive shaft. Any serious thoughts would be appreciated.....especially from people with 6 speed V6's in 4X4's...who have done a marginal lift (I'm running around 2 inches or so).
BTW...the mods so far are DR coilovers up front with the swaybar billet extendors and Total Chaos Upper Control arms.....along with new springs (Atlas) in the rear with Rancho 9000 shocks. That's it....the truck is smooth as silk once under way....but this vibration is driving mad!!!!!

damn dude that reallt sux  sorry to hear about that just keep bugging the dealership maybe they will eventualy help you out. i don't see how the mod"s you have done could have caused those vibration problems. i know it really sux to have a new truck with problems. i'm sure all of us hope the best for you. good luck. wish i could help.

Hmmmmmmmm, let me say this; Bullintercoursefecalmaterialfromanoldrottingcorpse .
My 6spd is lifted with a budget kit, 16X8's, 285's (yeah, but it LOOKS great) and rides, drives, blah blah blah as smooth as silk. It is an OEM build issue, keep taking it back until they fix the problem. Don't accept lame excuses but work with the dealer.
Your problem sounds like out of tolerance drivetrain alignment or components which in this case would be totally unaffected by a lift and bigger tires.

I'm running the three inch fabtech ahad a leaky windshield. Sounded like I had a band of kazoos in the cabin above 60 and there was water all over the passenger side floor. Took it in to the dealer and they told me that is was the lift making the noise. I told them that I had owned driven lifted trucks before, and I knew that squeaks and jiggles and all that shit was normal, but that this was clearly the windshield. Took me 5 trips to the dealer and eventually getting the head mechanic to sit shotgun as I went 80 down the highway and put my hand on the windshield to make the kazoo sound change to convince them it wasn't the lift. I also have a 4x4 V6 with the 6 speed and yes, it does a little shimmy in first gear, but nothing violent like you are describing, keep rubbing it in the dealers face until they fix the problem.

Well after months of going around in circles and literally chasing my tail...changing springs....adding springs...installing and changing pinior angle shims....etc. etc. ETC.! I noticed the carrier bearing bracket was not in line with the drive shaft....off kilter so to speak. So after work yesterday got underneath it with a ratchet, loosened the bolts, straightedned the bracket and about 80% of the vibration went away. Mind you it's not perfect....but I really noticed a difference....not only with the vibration, but now I'm getting a much smoother shifting of gears too....none of that occasional clipping of the gears when shifting....generally smoother shifting now. I'm really surprised no one at the dealership nor the shop that did the lift...ever noticed it or even thought about it. I suspect it was off just enough to cause minimal binding...thus the vibration and poor shifting.
Now I guess I'll keep it....although I've been drooling over that new FJ40 with the 6 speed V6. Doesn't look like it's going to require much in the way of mods, if all the hype I've heard is even remotely true!

My last truck was a 2000, and i think they had issues with small lifts and the carrier bearing...i remember reading about it back in the "Delphi" days. Same thing, not all the trucks, but some of em. Im feeling your pain on the "not many 6 speeds" problem. I am just trying to get all my dealer work done before i throw anything on because they are giving me enough chit as it is. Im at 20K and i think im well past the break in, and the quirks are getting less and less (knock on wood).
another thought....motor mount? i doubt broken, but maybe loose? this is the only thing i have ever come across that caused the manual truck (chevy) to behave exactly like you describe
