View Full Version : How likely will the axle hit the gas tank here...

I just shortened my wheelbase by a foot. I am trying to get it driving again on the cheap and would like to use the stock tank for now. How bad do you guys think it would be to just put the tank back in the stock location? I am trying to find a solution that keeps the future flat bed as low as possible.

Mounting the gas tank there looks like you are just asking for a big hole in the gas tank. Move it long ways behind the axle where the spare would mount?

What about making a shallow depth tool box in the front of the bed and tucking the tank up inside the bottom of the box?

It's too wide to put sideways between the frame rails. It may fit behind the axle, mounted longways (like it's pictured in those pics), but the it's just asking to suffer damage there as well. What I'll be doing is dropping mine into a steel box that I'll mount in my tube bed just behind the cab. Fabbing up a steel box out of 1/8" sheet metal and angle iron shouldn't be too expensive, and would get the gas tank up out of harms way entirely.

I think I just need to get off my fat ass and just build a fuel cell and use all the stock parts off the factory tank. I am just not looking forward to welding thin metal. I need to pickup some .023 wire for the welder.

I built a custom steel fuel cell for my rig to locate it behind the axle. its seriously overkill thick, and has held up to a few serious boulders. my buddy jeff mounted his sideways ontop of his flatbed and built a box around it. not the best solution, but it works.
other flatbed tacoma's ive seen are just running fuel cells.
