View Full Version : Time to Mash My Motor...Well Sometime Soon Hopefully

Hey everyone, I just wanted to brag a little bit as I'm excited as hell about this. But, after a lot of thinking and lot of searching, I have made up my mind about the motor and running gear for my 82. I've found a 4.3 Vortec that only has about 25,000 miles on it. I'm sending the guy a cashier's check in the next day or two and going to get it shortly there after. I couldn't resist the extra 80-100 horsepower over a 22re and I was thinking, if I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it once and do it right, so hopefully I won't be disappointed on the performance/output on the motor, as I was concerned about a lack of power with a 22r or 22re.

So, this is what I've decided. 4.3 Vortec into a Turbo 350 trans into duel cases. I think that will give me enough low end grunt and the needed power to turn 36-37s on stock 4:10s. Actually, I know this can be done and everyone I have spoken to tells me it works great.

I got what I consider to be a fair deal on the motor, Howell Harness, and the shipping so I just decided to take the leap and do it! I will end up spending more $$$ on this set up but I think it will be so much more power and so freaking cool, that I can't resist!

I had to post this in the Tech section since this is going to be a technical witch hunt to get all this straightened out and done, but I know others have done it so I'm just assuming that a couple of college educated white boys (my father and I) can hopefully figure it out as we go along. And, I'm sure some of you all will be along for the bumpy ride as well.

Well, I should know sometime early next week when it will be here and I can't wait! I have a weeks vacation I have to take before the end of the year and I'm going to devote the majority of that time to the truck.

If anyone knows of anyone with a good Turbo 350 tranny or possibly the adapter plate for the t-cases, please let me know.

I'll be keeping everyone posted on the build up.

Thanks guys and wish me luck!

Marshall

Marshall go with a 700R4 to put behind your 4.3l . It's a non computer driven tranny and will would excellent for what you want to do.

Also if you go TH350 the Advance Adapters makes adapter for 350 to toycase

One more thing here is a 4L60E for $200 but you would have to get a ECU to drive it.

Thanks for the link Kyle and Chris let me know about your buddy's tranny. I thought that the earlier t350s were non computer activated, but I guess I'm wrong. I still have a lot of researching to do on this, but gotta start somewhere!

man thats cool, your rig is going to be faster than your normal truck :xozzy: Look into downey offroad is you need adapters. They are more for your year toy.

Yeah, I'm hoping to find a used adapter to mate the tranny to some duel toy cases. I'm just going to keep an eye out on Pirate and hope something comes up there so I don't have to pay the new price for one.
I went to Downey's website and they show no prices on most of their stuff. I mean, what's the point of a website if you can't even price their products?

That's gonna make you mash that motor... I look forward to helping when you get them together...

Remember, don't make offers you don't mean, I'm notorious for making people regret their offers...hahaha, just kidding. But, yeah, I will certainly take you up on your offer. I'm sure you have much more experience with respects to the wiring on motors from your buggy, but I don't expect too much trouble given the Howell harness and all. But, if anyone has an engine stand for sale or I could borrow for a little while that would be great, and I'm also going to need an engine hoist to put the thing in....Chris, does your dad have on I could use for a weekend?

Hey Michael, yeah, that would be great. I don't think the shape will matter too much as long as my motor doesn't end up on the floor or worse, on top of someone on the floor! I should have the motor here in a couple of weeks so I'll let you know and maybe I could at least use the hoist one weekend to get the thing in there.
Thanks for the offer!
