Hey everyone, I just wanted to brag a little bit as I'm excited as hell about this. But, after a lot of thinking and lot of searching, I have made up my mind about the motor and running gear for my 82. I've found a 4.3 Vortec that only has about 25,000 miles on it. I'm sending the guy a cashier's check in the next day or two and going to get it shortly there after. I couldn't resist the extra 80-100 horsepower over a 22re and I was thinking, if I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it once and do it right, so hopefully I won't be disappointed on the performance/output on the motor, as I was concerned about a lack of power with a 22r or 22re.
So, this is what I've decided. 4.3 Vortec into a Turbo 350 trans into duel cases. I think that will give me enough low end grunt and the needed power to turn 36-37s on stock 4:10s. Actually, I know this can be done and everyone I have spoken to tells me it works great.
I got what I consider to be a fair deal on the motor, Howell Harness, and the shipping so I just decided to take the leap and do it! I will end up spending more $$$ on this set up but I think it will be so much more power and so freaking cool, that I can't resist!
I had to post this in the Tech section since this is going to be a technical witch hunt to get all this straightened out and done, but I know others have done it so I'm just assuming that a couple of college educated white boys (my father and I) can hopefully figure it out as we go along. And, I'm sure some of you all will be along for the bumpy ride as well.
Well, I should know sometime early next week when it will be here and I can't wait! I have a weeks vacation I have to take before the end of the year and I'm going to devote the majority of that time to the truck.
If anyone knows of anyone with a good Turbo 350 tranny or possibly the adapter plate for the t-cases, please let me know.
I'll be keeping everyone posted on the build up.
Thanks guys and wish me luck!
