ok so ive searched this site and several others and still nothing so i shall ask you guys, ive got a 98 taco with the 3rz 5 speed 4x4, and im on 33s, the guy i bought my truck from didnt do the lift or the gears so he wasnt able to tell me what gears it has and id really like to know. ive done the jack it up and count the rotations things but i got confused and gave up. so any help is awesome.
in 5th gear on the freeway it says im doing 60 on my speedo when im actually doing 65-67 ish, it also likes to bog in 5th so i spend a lot of freeway time in 4th. i originally thought it had 4.88s but after talking to a friend on here he thinks i may be over geared, so maybe like a 5.29? anyway im just curious to know what gears i have so when i buy tires real soon i know what size to run.
You can look in the driver door jab at the info sticker and see what the gear code is. The door jam code only works if the gears have never been changed.
First digit:
A = 7.5" ring gear
B = 8" ring gear
Next two digits:

if your goin faster than ur speedo says your undergeared not overgeared. my guess is you still have stock gears with that ur describing. which ones i cant guess
The easiest way is to jack up the rear tire, and have a buddy turn it exactly one complete rotation, while you watch the driveshaft. Mark your rear driveshaft with a piece of tape, marker etc, this gives you a point of reference to look at. While he slowly rotates the tire, count how many times the shaft rotates while using your mark for reference. Like was posted prior...if it turns just slightly more than 4 rotations you have 4.10's, only 3.5 times you are running 3.58's etc etc etc.
