I have a 99 Tacoma, 3.4. Never changed the O2 sensor in it, and I am 137k. Just did the one on my 2000 3.4 4-runner, and it was simple. The plug was along the frame, about 6" away or so. (front o2 sensor before cat)
I looked at my Taco today, thinking I ought to do that one too, and the wire is really long, and disappears up above the tranny somewhere. Tried to reach my hand up there, but I couldn't feel the plug anywhere.
Where is that thing? If it is resting above the tranny, I have no idea how you would actually unplug it.
Yup, its right on top. I can disconnect it by feel, but I've also done dozens of clutch jobs so I know exactly how to get at it. Look at the connector on the rear O2 sensor, it is the same and will give you an idea what you are feeling for. Another option is to pull the shifter boots and get at it from the top, but even then its not all that accessible.
According to Denso's site, they offer three versions for my truck, and the only difference is wire length. I thought it was odd that they offered one with a 17" wire, until I went and looked at mine.
The plug is secured to the tranny with a clip. Even if u get that unclipped u don't get much slack out of the wire to make it easier, BUT since your replacing ur 02 sensor u might be able to get the slack u need to make it super easy by unbolting the other end or cutting and dealing with bolts later. I cut my hands up so bad doing this from the top I could not get at it from the bottom. Smaller the hands the better my hands are not small. Totally forgot to plug it back in before tightening my bellhousing bolts (stupid micro brews)
you could, it would save you a little money, but you better get the correct black wires connected, remember there are 2. Im a small guy (small hands) so its easy for me to reach certain areas. I just sold my 99 auto 3.4, when i replaced it lst month, was really close to the sensor, i feel bad for you they changed it on the 5spd. Hire a friend like me to help .
haha, maybe my wife could do it for me...unfortunately, she has never shown interest in vehicle repair, haha. It is not like my truck is throwing a code or anything, guess I will wait till spring to crawl around under there.
lol, shoot, all my ex g/f's get down and dirty, a requirement of mine if you want to date me. A wife is a whole other animal (you know what i mean) though, haven't dealt with one myself yet.
U can see what u need to get at if u expose everything. Shine a light straight ahead on top of tranny and u should be looking right at it. Just far enough that u can mess with it with ur finger tips. I say if u can get the clip that holds the plugs to the tranny undone then u would be good to pull the other end up to u which would give u all the slack u needed. I didn't want or have time to mess with those bolts down there holding the other end. I guess if u got that far I think the only problem u might have is securing the plugs back to the tranny. Mines just laying on top of the tranny. It's not going anywhere but I'd like to figure out how I can clip it back in it's little holder with out dropping the rear of my tranny to give me enough room to unplug it and replace it. I was in such a hurry to get my clutch done before I went out of town I didn't have time to get my o2 sensor.
