I have a 97 taco with a 4cyl and 5-speed. I'm looking to swap the thirds to get a 4:10 gear (i currently have 3:58's), I have found two complete thirds out of a 96 4runner, but the guy doesnt know much about his vehicle. Can anyone tell me if these will fit in my Taco???
The rear diff from the 4runner will not bolt on to your Taco axle.
The front diff would work, if your Taco and the donor 4runner
both have ADD. I think that no 96+ 4runners came with manual hubs.
This is not from personal experience. Its from an article on
Toyota diffs on 4x4wire.
The 4runner front diff will work. Doesn't matter if it came from a vehicle with ADD. If the 97 Tacoma has manual hubs...all you have to put your diff tube onto the 4runner's, diff housing. It is only a matter of removing 4 bolts, and popping out the little cog-looking stub on the same side. (don't know technical name for that part)
Finding a 4.10 tacoma rear should not be too hard. Just remember you need a third member from an 8.4" tacoma rear, not the 8" version that comes on TRD's.
Sorry to hijacked but it looks like someone can answer my question on this thread. I have an 01 4runner that I want to put an elocker in. I have one out of a 02 tacoma with bad pinion bearings I'm thinking about getting rebuilt. I've seen the threads about modifying the tacoma axles. Can I do this to the 4runner axle? The gears are the same on each vehicle so no worries there. Main question is can I mod the axle or do I HAVE to get a axle out of a 4runner?
Thanks. I was pretty sure I could swap it in. Just wanted to make sure it was a 3rd member mod only and not axles or anything. Not something I want to find out in the middle of...
