it'll get painted soon enough. Everything will be the red color. But depending on how much it's going to cost will ultimately decide when it get's painted... Alot of blood, sweat, tears, and my wife threatening to kick my ass, but mostly sweat went into this thing. There are a few loose ends that i need to tie up, and some items that need attention before it's totally done. But I am very pleased with the results.

Specs
97 Extra cab V6 Supercharged enging tranny, T-case and frame
98 Taco rear E-locker
92 Chevy rear springs
81 Wagoneer front axle
86ish reduction unit (Marlin Crawler)
97 hood, core support and grill
95 corner lights
04 cab bed and 3 of the doors
03 front passenger door
02 fenders (Thanks again David)

It has the 04 dash and interior (only running one airbag) and i am using the 04 gauge cluster with the digital speedo/odo

Yeah, It'll look much better all one color... Maybe i should have Dean Camo it. I doubt that Amber would go for that though. So far i only have two issues with the electrical system. The cruise is DOA (haven't really looked at it) and my Airbag light is on. IT's not the spiral cord, but something else. I'm going to have to do a little troubleshooting to get it working right.

Deserttaco
10-19-2005, 11:39 PM
I'd love to call it FrankenTaco, But we all know there can only be one "FRANKENTACO" Plus it wouldnt be the same. If anyone asks it's a 97, Cause that's what the VIN says it is. I am going to try to take it around tomorrow to get some paint quotes. I don't need anything perfect, but all the same color would be very nice. The reason that it's so many different colors is I am cheap! I used what i could use from the 97, Then i got the fenders cheap, And the door from E-bay. When i set out to do this swap i wanted something Unique. And I think that i got it. not to mention that it's still a 5speed. I'll get some pics when it get's painted up. The Action shots will probably have to wait a few months. I work a weekend shift, and have 2 kids at home that are still pretty young, so my time is limited. But hopefully it'll happen soon.

confusing how? Did it make you think? :D The way i figure it, Only a select few people will ever notice that it's not right. Most people will never notice that it's got an early Gen Grill and headlights on a late model body style. The people who actually see the difference are the guys i'd like to talk to.

Steve,
You do realize that red is the most expensive pigment out of all of the "normal" colors, right? You have so many colors to choose from on there, although the red is covering the largest percentage of the vehicle. Just don't have any food or gum or candy in your mouth when they tell you what the paint is going to cost, compared to one of the other colors on the truck. :D

On another note though, the truck is just plain amazing. All of the different parts look great together! Congratulations.

Unbeleivable, can't beleive it is done. Why bother with a new paint job though? I thought it was mostly a trail rig. Look back at your old shots and note the scrapes and damage to your last body, why would you want to do that again but to a new paintjob you paid for. I say hit it with the rattle can and call it a day! :D

I'd love to just camo it with a rattlecan, But My wife doesn't like the look. It is mostly a trail rig, but will be driven around town and on vacation too. I guess depending on how much it is going to cost to paint, maybe the camo will still have a chance... Plus there isn't really that much to paint. just the passenger doors, fenders, hood, and passenger rocker... The rest is already red.

Actually I spent about 8K on my donor truck http://www.tacomaterritory.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14777 I've also spent $150 on a new passenger door, $60 on new front fenders, and $80 on airbag parts and seatbelts... How is project ANGRY comming?

its titled and registered now, got my old 97 wheels on it. I bought brender's 35" mtr's for it, also got an 85 toytota axle from a pirate person in Sac. I need to rebuild the axle first, but im thinking maybe of doing the engine work first. Proabaly a head gasket and timing chain at once, along with tons of hoses and misc crap...then attack the suspention. Probably will go with ALL marlin stuff, SAS kit and marlin rear.

SO basically, its stittiing....lol.

You are right, It's a ton of work. You would know :D

I had an Earl Schieb paint job once, and will never have another. 1 week after the paint was done, I went to get gas, well the damn thing overfilled the tank, and gas came out of the filler neck. All of the damn paint just melted off below the gas door. Never again. I Tried to convince Amber to followin Dean's footsteps and just Camo it, But she wasn't too hip on the idea, and really wants it painted red. So it's going to get painted soon.

As for Rubicon ready, Nope not just yet. i still have a bunch of loose ends to tie up.
finish putting the interior together
fix the broken front U-Joint.
swap both bent rear axleshafts
Finish welding the bed mounts to the frame and paint them before they rust
reinstall the rock sliders
Build a new front bumper with integrated winch mount
Find out what is klunking in my front end when i turn from side to side.
Find out why the airbag light is on
Fix my damn cruise control
Put the new shell on and paint it
and finally she needs some new rubber. my 35's have seen better days.

I'm pretty excited about it, since they are painting my extra fenders too. :) and i'll have two matching tailgates. The rest of the finish work is just tedious wiring, assembling interior bits and pieces, tiewrapping wires up out of the way. Stuff like that. Reallly it's only a one guy job. I'm hoping to get out and take it on a run in December or January.

Don't feel like a puss, it looks like your truck is pretty new... You gotta remember mine is almost 10 years old now. I still can remember the first time i drilled a hole in it anywhere... I can also remember the first time I took a Sawzall to it. Talk about no turning back!!! I'm sure it will be upside down at one point or another, but hopefully that will be much later. I'm hoping to get a cage in it next summer.

I'd love to design Trucks for Toyota, Help them get back to their roots... I'm not to hip on the design of the new trucks, but then again when I had my 93, I hated the New Tacomas (95.5's) They were too damn bubbley... little did I know that when i went to check out the 3.4L V6 i'd fall in love and sell my little 22RE 4Cyl that night.... SO maybe they'll grow on me, maybe not.
