Could you just unbolt the strut from the lower control arm and remove the arms as a whole without taking the spindel and ball joints off?
Yes, you could do that. You need to remove the TREs from the steering knuckles also.
You can easily separate the lower arm from the spindle by removing the 4 bolts of the ball joint assembly/steering knuckle. I would recommend doing that because the lower bushings tend to be more of a chore than the upper bushings to replace, so it would be nice to have the lower essentially separate from everything.
I can't recall on the prerunner, but I know on the 4WD models that the steering rack interferes with taking the rear bolts out of the lower control arms, so the rack needs to be loosened and moved to remove the rear lower control arm bolts.
That aside, this would be a great time to replace the ball joints if you haven't done so because everything is apart and right there. Its up to you though.
Good I'd hate to take all that .off. And ya I replaced the ball joints. I found out the hard way
