my truck is an 86 with a 22r it has a 94 transmission in it (not my doing bought like that) but it gets up to speed in 4th gear at about 50-55 mph and thats about it and shows no signs of wanting to go into 5th gear at all. first is this fixable and second is it gonna hurt anything to run it in 4th because its not making all the usual signs of needing to shift. Oh and thats in 4th gear with the pedal to the floor i only get 50-55 mph
Sounds like this an auto tranny? If so, I believe they were only a 4 speed. As for why it will only do 50-55 mph, could be lots of things. Do yo have a tach? What RPM are you running at that speed?
It would be helpful to post up any mods on the truck. Tire size, gear ratio, lift exc.
Not sure really i just bought the truck so i dont know wat all mods it has not many i assume it has 33" tires and a lift is all i know i think stock gears and its a 5 spd manual shift and i dont have a tach. sorry i know its not much help im a lil fustrated cuz i thought this truck would be an easy fixer and im clueless
Yup, the tire size/gear ratio combo is your problem. 33" tires and 4:10 gears just plain sucks. Like everybody else says, re-gearing the axles is in order if you want to keep the big tires and use 5th gear.
When you upgrade your tire size, you have to change your ring and pinion gears in the front and rear axles to compensate. The stock gears in many older Toyota trucks is 4.10 ratio. These are intended for about 29-30" tires. So with your 33" tires, you need a lower ratio (higher number). The common ratios for Toyota axles are 4.10, 4.56, 4.88 and 5.29.
This will be an expensive upgrade. Figure about $650 per axle.
Those 22R engines are dogs even with factory sized tires, let alone 33's! Regear that pig, or you will see old ladies with walkers passing you on hills.
10-4 ill drop tire sizes for right now to help a little. Does any one wanna help me take my 22r out and put all new gaskets on it lol its got a leak from either the front seal or the timing cover/seal not much of a mechanic and could really use experiance
