thinking about getting the old lady a cruiser. she drove my truck for the first time this yr and now she talks about driving all the time. kinda uneducated when it comes to a cruiser. any suggestions. looking for something post '85.
which yrs came with the factory locker and some other goodies that i might not know about? thanks
no factory lockers until 1993 (unless you count the Center Diff. locker on the early 80's)
unless she likes driving stick, id recommend an fj62, only made them from 88-90, its the same as a fj60 except with an auto trans, and fuel injection,
great styling and of course really reliable.
the fzj80's (1993-1997) are the ones taht can have factory lockers, have the more powerful 1fz engine, and some other stuff...
Some people cannot stand driving the 2f engine or the 3fe because say its way underpowered.. something to think about
Source her an Australian HJ75 Troupie... With the 4.2 I-6 Turbo DIesel... far and away the coolest cruiser ever(except maybe an HJ70 Tray-back), and they drive really well...
I prefer 95-97's hold out for factory lockers (option), 80 series are much cheeper and easier to lift. Don't forget Lexus LX450's ...I paid less for mine than I could find a equivalent 80 at the time. Check out slees off roads guide to 80's http://www.sleeoffroad.com/newbie/newbie100.htm
An 80 would definitely be a good choice for the Mrs.
The 91-92 have gotten such a bad rap, but the 3FE is virtually bulletproof and because the 1FZ gets all the hype people pay stupid money for them, especailly if they have the lockers.
Me? 91 was so cheap (135,000 miles, fresh HG & radiator done by Toyota ) I couldn't stand it... including lift, wheels & tires, F&R lockers, regear, bumpers, winch and all the extras I am still under $10k.
Gearing makes the difference, and watch the HG's on these... Good Luck!
I'm also looking for FJ-62 with EFI.. What are typical symptoms to look for when buying one? I think bushings/ball joints go out often, so is it due to age or flaw? Do FJ-62's have manual hubs and not all time 4x4 like the 90's models? soory but i dont know jack about 'cruisers..
Is there a code in the VIN or something to indicate if an FJ 80 has lockers? I've been calling on a few ads I see and most people have no clue if the truck they are selling has lockers or not. Were they avaiable with only a rear locker or will they always be on both axles?

K294 on door pannel plate means lockers on 93-97 FZJ80's and LX450's
Forgot, 80's with locker are front and back...100 series only have rear 98's and 99's
