well, the cops have busted me and my truck for the last time. i am over the legal bumper limit here in washington by 12". (clearanced bed) my question is, should i just be done with it and go full-width? i have a HP 44 with the shafts, and i have a line on a t100 axle or two, so i am considering ripping the mall cruiser apart. has anyone gone from waggy width to full width? just so you know, there is no way in hell my truck is legal right now with the bumpers, sas, lift, etc.
thanks, josho

I'm just curious - I'd like to see how illegal your rig looks :-)

ak, last time i checked, they were wider. much wider. here is a link to my truck from another thread:
http://www.tacomaterritory.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16674&highlight=tube+doors
they go by GVRW here, and the bumper height last year was 29" in the front, and 31" in the rear according to a GVRW of 4501 or more. this year they dropped all 1/2 ton mid-size trucks to a class below, and our bumper height is 24" and 26" for our class. from the bottom of my rect. stock bumper to the floor is 38". my tires stick out 1.5" past my fender flares. my front bumper is dangerous and not for street use because of it's lack of a "crumple zone". these are only a few things i have been nailed for. so, i am considering taking it off the street for a number of reasons.

You're right! I just looked at it again and the third members are interchangeable but the widths are far different.
T-100 rear is 66"

One of those would be sweet under mine if I ever get the full width RS44 under the front.

how much would it cost to swap to full width axles? would it cost more than just buying a little beater car to drive on the streets? just a thought

It's hard to say. Depends on what axles, how complete they are, how they are built, and so on.
All of the other aspects of the swap are the same.

Make a drop down bumper that can easily be removed for off-road. Looks ghey but it should keep the popo's away. Know what Im talking about?

yeah, i have thought about that. i saved my stock bumper for that reason alone. however, sooner or later, i get popped and then it's back to nissan lowrider chromies, 45 series tires, and stock bumpers put back on just to pass the bumper law. as far as cost for the swap, i have all the parts, it's just a matter of doing it. i have a DD, a tow rig, and a few other projects that are road worthy, but i just love to drive my tacoma.

Ford HP D44 bolts right up so the only thing you will need to do is lengthen your tie rod and drag links. My drive shaft fit perfectly without changing the length. 2 more days and I will be done swapping to full widths. Looks pretty good.

I went from a Waggy D44 to a HP D44 from a 78 F250 and it bolted right up. I only got the housing and inner axle shafts. I used everything else off of my Waggy axle ie.. Carrier, flattop knuckles, hubs, rotors, brakes, stubb shafts. By using the waggy outers I kept the 6 lug pattern. The only parts I had to buy were the ring and pinion for the HP D44 (Ring and pinion had to be changed to reverse cut gears). Parts Mike traded out my tie rod and drag link free of charge. As for the rear I am currently running the stock TRD axle with the Allpro 3" wheel spacer kit. It is still 3" shorter than the front but not that noticeable. Hope this helps...

all of this sounds feasable, the only problem i see is that the housing i scored is 1/2 ton and used coils instead of springs. so, there is no springpad cast into the housing, so i am thinking i might have to widen the spring hanger. anyone else have this issue on a full-width swap?

Quick question. What year axle did you get? Be careful some are thinner wall tube and the radius arm pieces are cast. Have you seen this link?

my front bumper is dangerous and not for street use because of it's lack of a "crumple zone".
I never knew that was a bad thing???? jackasses.......

Where in Washington are you...the rigs down here in SW Wash. don't have too much problems with the popo as long as you have mud flaps and some/half of your tire is under the wheel well. I got in an accident a few weeks ago and the cop just laughed at how much damage my bumper had done to the rig I hit and I had no damage...I feel bad for it but I woud rather have a solid front end then have it be destroyed in a little fender bender

i am located in spokane, wa. the cops here just suck. anyway, i bailed on the 1/2 ton axle, i am just going to keep looking for a 3/4 ton front end. as far as a crumple zone in my bumper, i got a ticket for bumper height 2 years ago because they would not consider the plastic valance in my bumper as part of my bumper, so i was way over. i bought the ARB to get around that, but while some don't care, others hate it. i am going to shorten my rear shackles on my chevies, and pull a few leaves out of my front springs and see how far i drop. taking the BL out helped alot, but if i can drop another 2", i will be set. at least it'll be less conspicuous.

I don't understand why the cops bag on your truck. It does not look that radical. The stock tacoma just has this two bumps on the front of the bumper. Is that that they are looking for?

Well shit...the ARB front bumpers still have crumple zones built into them...completely DOT legal in Washington as far as I know. As far as heighth I guess some cops are just dicks about that kinda stuff.

most times it depends on the cop....state patrol that are motorcyclists by hobby are the worst. i have had a ticket for too agressive tread for street use. (38" bias tsls) so, even though i can beat most the tickets, it sucks to have to get hassled most the time. their main gripe is that because of the height of my truck and the extensive steel tubing, bumpers, and square stock, anyone that hits me will most likely slide underneath me and off goes their roof. i will lower this pig and then see what happens.

Put receiver hitches into your bumpers then fab up drop down bumpers that can go into the receivers and taken out for wheelin???? Live in North Carolina and there are trucks that make mine look small on 37 SSR's and SAS'd. No not a mall crawler.

I had to do this when I went to a flatbed. I ended up having to go to court over not having a drop bumper on my truck. So I fabbed one up that mounts into the receiver hitch and at the same time hides the hitch to have the appearance of being a real bumper.
