I'm in the middle of regearing (4.10 to 4.88) hopefully finish the rear tonight. My question is, after I get the rear done, is it alright to drive the truck before I start on the front? Obviously I would not put the truck in four wheel drive. I would never think about doing this if I wasn't sure there would no problems.
So, on that note, me and a buddy were talking the other night about regearing and we tried to decide, what would be the first thing to break (again, I would never do this) if someone did put their truck in four wheel drive with miss-matched gears?
You know mudders run different gears in their rigs. They often times want the front to pull a little harder than the rear. I have a few friends that have that and they dont blow anything up. I wouldnt try it on the road. Maybe the mud is more forgiving. Anyways I wouldnt try it.
Thanks for the input. I'm going to try to push on to the front. But it's nice to know I could drive the truck in the mean time if necessary (taking into consideration appropriate break-in).
Thanks for the offer. I'm about 5 hrs north of the Bay Area, most likely too far away.
I have it covered so far. I got everything set up by ECGS. I finished the rear last night, and should finish the front tonight. It's going pretty well considering the learning curve, theres only so much you can get from reading. I think I could it in a third of the time if I were to do it again.
Honestly, the hardest part was getting the damn cvs out and then back in. The diff itself was pretty easy coming out and going in. Now that I've done it, I think the cvs will go much easier next time.
