ok so i need to replace my cv joint boot but i decided to replace the whole cv itself since dirt and water and stuff probably already got all up in my cv. i heard that replacement cv joints will not last too much at all and that if i could get my hands on stock cv joints to grab them. is that true? i just dont want to get a used stock cv and for it to go bad quick as well... what should i do?
I bought and installed a NAPA. The price was just too good. We'll see about longetivity... When I changed the CV out w/ the LBJ diconnected and the axle in, there was binding that the OEM didn't have, when rotated.
I plan on rebooting the OEM for a spare since the joint is still good. With the boot slide mod.
I would stick with OEM. Maybe inspect it before you spend money on a new (lesser quality) axle. They may look a bit intimidating, but they are pretty easy. If it's not totally destroyed...follow these steps.
1. Order boot kit from dealer - comes with grease and new clips.
2. Most likely just need to take boot off, pull off retainer clips and pull joint apart. Take careful notice to joint as you pull it off shaft. One side is beveled and the other is not. Beveled side goes on splined shaft first when re-installing it.
3. Clean old grease out real good and wipe clean any dirt.
4. Put joint back together, slide new boot/boots on and stuff it with supplied grease.
Below is a video of a full rebuild. Probably a little excessive. You most likely will not need to pop out bearings as this video shows, but it does show how to take apart the axle. You probably will only need to take apart the inner joint, remove both boots, clean, grease and put back together. follow this and re-install axle and go.
yeah, that's what I do And yes, definitely grab a spare any chance you can get. If you wheel at all, these IFS trucks don't like cv joints...or they love em, that's why the eat em up.
I put NAPA cv's in my 91 pickup, boots were falling off/apart on the oems. Never had an issue with them (only had them a year though) and only on 31" tires. Just can't beat the price of the napa ones. Toyota wanted something ridiculous like 900 a pair lol 70 bucks each at napa.
I just put a NAPA one on mine this morning. Finially switched from the horrendously shitty GSP ones I've been running for a few years. The boots would go out in a month or two with those.
I've been going on a replacement CV from O'Reilly's for several years now with no problems (knock on wood). I've kept the OEM as a spare. The hardest part of the whole process was trying to reintall it without buggering up the oil seal and causing a leak.
