I have a daily driver 2000 Tacoma 4wd extra cab thats bone stock. I am currently replacing both front axles and was wanting to upgrade suspension with a improved ride and a touch of lift. Ive been reading here about the Bilstein 5100 adjustable ride hight shocks. My truck needs new shocks front and rear. Would it be worth the money to go with the 5100s? If so Ive read something about the 5100 on stock rear leafs. Is there a certain combo of 5100s that i need to buy with stock suspension? My truck has a little over 150k on it. Hoping that the 5100s will be a noticiable improvement in handling. Any feedback on 5100s and stock suspension will be great. Thanks
I did exactly as you want to do with my 97 tacoma. My stock shocks were toast after 90k miles and the difference with the 5100s was night and day. I've had them in for 3 plus years now and have them set at the middle setting to make the truck sit level. My rear springs are worn and will sag with my quad in the back, and this has put strain on the rear shocks, but they still function well. I would totally recommend going this route.
The issue with the 5100's and sagged out rear springs is you run a chance of bottoming out the shock before the bump stop hits. This is because the shock is longer than the stock length. There are a few ways to solve this issue. Consider extended bump stops which will strike out before the shock has a chance to bottom out. If you don't haul heavy loads a lot or you don't fully flex the rear susp ever then hell just run em'...
OR
Buy factory length replacement bilstein shocks for the rear and 5100s for the front.
