I have a 96 2.7l and I was wondering if it is normal for the cv's to have some play in them. Mine move about an eighth of an inch side to side but it also sounds like it is hitting some metal when I move them back and forth. They spin fine with no binding so I'm not sure if this is normal or not. Anyone know of a good Toyota mechanic in fort collins? I probably need to grease the hubs and wheel bearings.

Um movements side to side? Rotational or in/out? Both of which should have some movement to a degree, hence why there are joints w/rubber boots on both ends. Loud metal sound? Um, yeah... could use some more info. There's no visible damage or drivability issues? So, um... why are you concerned about your cv axles? Are they doing something weird?

Yes you should have a little bit of play in all directions. They but up against another piece of metal so if you are hearing them hit when moving them in and out that is normal. Not much movement tho, 1/8 inch is very little and would be normal. :)

The only reason I am concerned is that whenever I hit a bump I can here something rattle and I think it might be the cv's or something inside the hub. The boots are fine though and these are manual hubs.

Check your skid plate first to see if its loose... If it is coming from the front check other related items in your suspension to see if anything is loose (you know kick the damn thing and if it makes noise then ya might want to look further into it, jk ;) )I am not a moron, it is just easier to start simple, stupid :D
