Mudding damage your truck?

What are some of the ways that mudding can do damage to your truck? Should you hose off the suspension and undercarraige of the truck after each trip? Never really thought about it with my old truck, but with a new truck that's my daily driver wasn't sure? Thanks.

Anything can be damaged by mud on your truck! Take it to the car wash and clean it off as soon as possible and do the most thorough job. I've had to replace a rear tranny seal, front diff oil seal, rear axle oil seal, brake pads prematurely.

something I heard a few weeks ago, and actually works is....get a spray bottle, get half baby oil and half water. mix it all together and spray it up under the truck, everywhere. this will help with spraying the mud off. it will just fall off with a little pressure from the water. I tested that theory after a muddy weekend at the hunting camp. worked like a charm.

Mud can assist in rusting. It clogs up the holes that would normally drain water off of stuff, so water sits in contact with metal for extended periods of time. Even if painted, eventually rust can form. My stock skids were already starting to rust inless than 6 months from mud sitting on top of them. I noted that I had plugged up the drain holes in the A-arms, holes in the frame from different mudding forays.

The mud can harden on rims and tires over night causing the tires to be out of balance till its washed off.

Mud can throw serpantine belts off.

It could potentially cause higher than normal engine temps if the outside of the radiator gets clogged with mud.

I could potentially mess with trans linkages if is allowed to dry overnight.

I'm not sure if anything was redesigned for the 2005 models, but the older models had issues with mud getting into the idler pulley bearings and the alternator. Also, mud is famous for leaky seals on the front differential.
Basically, if you play in the mud, clean the truck throughly afterwards.

so far for me 2 alternaors (1 rebuilt, 1 new), 1 idler pulley. ive learned my lesson. stay away if you can, or just clean everything completely.

Mud bad! Everytime I tell myself after getting back from mudding, I'm never going to do that again. Then the next rain comes and there I am again playing in that crap. I wash it off asap, I even jack it up with the hi-lift to get underneath really well. I cant wait till it stops raining so I cant have that temptation. As Jeff would say "mud is the devil" just stay away from it if you can.

Like others have said, mud gets EVERYWHERE! Literally. Baby oil and water mixture works EXCELLENT. If you're gonna go rompin', take a damn tow strap, coat the ENTIRE undercarriage w/ baby oil and water, and go pressure was the engine compartment and undercarriage THOROUGHLY when you're done NOT treading lightly, lol!

Greasy thin coats of mud are one thing but deep sloppy mud..It would save you some effort to walk out to that muddy area and throw a $100 in cash into it. THen you won't have to clean the truck. And you spent your sleaky seal and eventual Alternator money.

I hate sandy mud. But I love clay nothing is funnier than flinging some clay doin some dounuts. Muddin is fun to me and is far better than rock crawling as far as drivetrain damage. I like any kind of offroading but havent done much besides mud riding ,hill climbing and trail riding. No rocks in mobile alabama.

For me, AC idler pulley bearing, rear axle seals, and probably tie-rod ends were helped along from driving with mud-unbalanced wheels. And my truck only intermittently sees mud. Oh yeah, gravel in frame that won't come out - from sinking it in gravelly mud.

Make that $140. Just leave your shoes in the pile of slop when you toss the $hunsky into the pit. You are never gonna use those shoes again, if they stay on your feet anyway. The worst thing I ever busted in a mud hole?? My EGO.

AC Bearings (Warranty)

Just be sure to clean it up good before going in and asking for any warranty work. I did all that in one trip but it was a lot of fun!

Yeah many say mud is the devil, but compare the damged caused by rock crawling. I would believe far more has happened. I know mud is bad but if i didnt have mud, why would i have an excuse for 4wd? In Macon, GA there is nothing else fro me to play in. So far no damages, but i usually dont let the mud stay on for more than a few days. I always spray everytihing i cang et to off though. I know no one else will see it under my truck, but i know its there.

Also think about how heavy that mud is(you know when you can't see paint b/c of all the mud) putting extra stress on parts that have mud in/on them.

i was in the woods until 4am sun night trying (unsuccessfully) to recover a friend who thought a drained lake bed would be a nice place to go mudding, he was in a lifted V8 grand cherokee buired to the frame in frozen soggy alabama muk,

i got frozen mud every where and now i have so many weird noises coming from my truck its making me sick, ive pressure washed it twice, undercarage, engine, everything,
my belts are squiking like a female dog not just at start up but all the time, i think i tore a cv boot, and now my locker wont engage, i have a long list of things to check this weekend

i usually keep my truck as clean as i can by doing things like driving around mud holes and watching other people drive through them, its more economical that way
