Yeah and I never got to even take my truck there.
Here's a FJOA thread on the subject....

There are alot of old pits in this area, someone needs to get an arial map and find a seluded one and go to town. There are a bunch west of Gainesville but most are still at least semi-active.

This is bull shit, the pit is the only good place to wheel in FL. There is no use in me even SASing my Runner till I get stationed back in Az. I really hope this isn't true.
I bet someone could make a ton of cash if they bought the pit or a pit type area and charge a $5 a day OHV fee. Every other state in US has a OHV park but FL, I really hate FL, even more so now. We should all pull our money together and try and start our own OHV park.
This sucks.

From everything I've read it looks like people/clubs inquiring into purchasing the pits is what got them closed. The owners apparently didnt really care until people repeatedly kept pestering them to lease/purchase the pits then they got fed up with it. I have also read that they have posted it before and the signs just kept getting removed and they gave up on trying to keep it posted/patrolled. But that is all second hand information.
Since I'm like the only person I know other than Brian and a few poeple I work with left in this town I am very bored. So I started looking at Topo maps and satellite imagery to find quarries in the area and survey the satellite images to see if there is any activity at some of them. I have found a quarry that looks pretty much abandoned that might be interesting to check out. Looks about 1/3 of the size of A Pit though.

When you find a new place don't post it up for ALL TO SEE. I read the all the thread in the link your posted and I've heard about people trying to buy/lease the pits before. I'm sure if there is some land in FL that is for sale that could be made in the pvt. OHV park. With the help of ALL the FL 4wd club this could really happen and really should be brought up at the Jan campout with the FL4wdA. I'd put most of my savings to go into the pot if this could really happen.

It was bound to happen......
I bet in a few months people will be riding out there again. It's too damn tempting.
It does seem like a lot of spots were closed this year  .
Ryan, look at west Alachua county, near Newberry. Maybe we can pick a weekend and scout around.
I love Florida but it IS frustrating that there are no real designated OHV areas in the state either public or private. Good topic to bring up at the FL4WDA meeting.

Newberry and Williston are surrounded by active and abandoned pits. There are 2 more I have found on topo/satellite that are on the way to ONF we should check out when we head down to the January campout. I have driven around the Newberry quarries and they are huge with tons of deeeep pits, but the problem is those seem very active.

OMG! I wheeled it 2x's and now it's posted!!!! I kinda had a bad feeling that to many people knew about it. I mean it's the public holy grail of wheeling in FL. I hate FL too Steve. It's frustrating living in a area that is full of population boom, environmental nazis and idiots that ruin good spots. so now basically FL is dead to the wheeling world. OMG,... i'm not gonna sleep tonight, or tomorrow night. OHV parks are a good deal, but "insurance" from what I hear is the tricky part. YOu have all sorts of mud hole spots popping up. Lakeland mud hole, and the one off 19... Oceans Pond. but no real OHV park. I know those places are pricey, and FULL of 50" tall tire trailered rigs. people like us would just be laughed at and spectate. and they have a Cop and Ambulance on scene when they are open and close at 4pm. .... OH this sucks.
This is all the Jeep'n idiots fault.

It's no ones fault, for trying to do the right thing, to get permission to wheel private property. Its still private, just actively enforced. When the fire dies people will start to move back in. For all we know some one was just trying to create the leagal "Holy Grail" of wheeling in Florida. Last time it closed it was for about a year and it became a movie set of all things. So who knows what the plans are now.

That would be VERY cool! Especially if we can keep it as much of a secret as possible...

This SUX! I knew i should have gone with you guys that last time. Well, like Neil said hopefully after a while it'll be cool to go there again. Looks like the truck will be sharing funding with the mustang project i've been thinking about starting.
