I'm on my 2nd Toyota Tacoma ('97 2.7 4x4 Xtracab) and both have been flawless in terms of comfort and reliability. Considering a '95-'98 Toyota T100 Xtracab V6 4x4. I have driven a few from 100k-185k miles and they all run great, seat 6 in the larger cab and the bigger bed is great too, plenty of power with the 190hp 3.4 V6.
What are the problem areas to watch out for? Are there head gasket problems on the 3.4 V6's like there were on the older 3.0 V6's? I assume they have timing belts and not chains that need periodic replacement? I have seen several 3.4 T100's and Tacomas with well over 200k miles. Anything to watch out for? I just need a truck that can fit a child's car seat in the extracab and Tacoma's can't. I don't want a full-size truck because of price and also because of gas mileage and size. The T100 seems to fill a nice mid-size truck niche. Thanks.

if your lookin for gas milage, a v6 4x4 t100 drinks gas, alot of gas. for the size, if you could afford a tundra i think that would be your best bet. im not saying t100's arent good, but the tundra gets comprable mileage to the t100 and its got a v8 with alot more power and versitility. oh yeah, ive seen a couple of t100's with around 100,000 and auto trans the trannies are slipping real bad. my friend has one with this problem and so does my gilfriends dad. just my :2cents:

that is a nice T-100 in the pic. it is either 97 or 98. i have 255K on mine without any tranny slipping issues. there are plenty of these with 200-250K on them. they are awesome trucks. go the 4x4wire.com BB and the T-100 section for all the T-100 diehards. head gasket recall was on some 95 and 96 models. there is info on the other board about it including a write-up by me. they are timing belts. they are VERY few things to look out for. PM me with any questions. i am VERY knowledgable on the T-100.

We used to own a '96 black X-cab V6 4x4 T100. It was a great truck and I believe we had it for 150,000 miles (bought new)

Just for camparision, my V6 tacoma got 18mpg all around driving. My tundra DC gets 17mpg. They are just about the same. Until I put the boat behind the tundra. Then it gets far better MPG. Pulling a 4500lb load the Tacoma used to get 12-14 on the open highway. Tundra gets about 15 on the open highway with the boat.

Let me start by saying, "I Love My T100." However, If I had to do it all over, I would probably go for a 5speed. My automatic with 153k has been very dependable and drives great, however, between check engine lights and hot tranny fluid warnings, I'm freaked out. A manual clutch just seems easy. I just drove to Loreto, Baja and back and at 75mph on long hills, the tranny gets hot. I have to take it out of overdrive, just to stay at 70mph on long hills (pheonix to flagstaff, greenriver to grand junction, etc). It's not a lack of power, just the nature of the torque converter heating up the fluid. I cooked the fluid last year, got a power flush, then a CEL, that hasn't gone away even though I changed the fluid and the part it was calling out PO773.
Other than that, the gas milage difference is worth the size (17mpg avg), I keep reading about 3.0's getting worse. I don't tow anything, but will haul multiple kayaks on the rack and will live out of the back for weeks at a time, and have the right amount of space for two.
Good Luck!

That's weird, I have never had any problems with mine. I pulled a very heavy trailer from Michigan to Iowa going 55 the whole way and it didn't ever sputter or overheat.

I have a 96 T-100 4X4 V6 which has been a great truck. On the average i get about 17mpg. If you can find one i would recommend it b4 a tacoma.
