ok so after going muddin a couple times and realizing that all terains aren't exactly the best, i was thinking about getting the Maxxis Buckshots or the Bighorn radial. or i was also thinking about getting super swampers trxus mt's. anyone heard anything about them? are they good and wear good onroad? thanks.

If you do a lot of highway driving you might want to keep AT's or go to a more streetable MT like Goodyear, BFG, or Firestone. The buckshots and swampers are great off road but the compounds are softer and wear pretty quickly on road. It's a trade-off between wear and noise and having good traction off road. There's always the Thornbirds! ;)

get the BFG MT's. Great traction and great tire wear. The TRXUS won't last 20,000 miles

I'm needing to replace my original tires too.. right now I have Bridgeston A/T P265/70R16's on my ExtCab TRD '02.
I wouldn't mind going a little bigger but I can't do a lift right now and I'm fine to stay with A/T since I do a lot of highway driving. Any suggestions on what to run?

The I'm running the cheap Trxus now. Great off-road, rough on the road but KMRunner is right about wear. And sploosh is right, it's all a trade off so I say get whatever you can get the best 'deal' on ... JUST NOT A/Ts. :D
I'm very happy w/my Swamper SSRs on my secondary truck too ... so far ... but they are not too cheap.

Personaly I ran the firestones like sploosh has for along time, trip back and forth the Ft. Campbell, KY wheelin in snow, mud, rocks the whole nine and I was very happy with them. They just don't come in a 36".... I guess I'll just enjoy the IROKS for a month till the hardball chews them up.

Now that I will be driving a lot more than normal I will need a more road worthy tire than the xterrains. They don't have to have the most aggressive tread since I have the 35's for the trail. Has anyone used or heard good news about Nitto Terra Grappler's? I found a good price on 285's and thought these might be a good AT / daily driver tire.

i bought the nittos for my 4runner right before i sold it but unfortunately never mounted them on the truck. i have heard great things about them and have no reason to not believe them. they took amazingly little weight to balance compared to my trxus and i hear they are great on road and even in mild off-roading.

Good deal! For the performance and price I can not go wrong. I am going to give them a try when the xterrains are no more.
$133 for the 285/75/16D at Discount Tire.

i really thought i'd like the nitto terra grapplers ...but they only come in load range D and i can feel every little bump in the road. ...i didn't think it would be such a big deal but after driving on them for a few thousand miles i'm starting to regret it. i wish i'd have stuck with the bfg at's but i was scared of the balancing issues several people seem to have with them and just wanted to try something different. .....expensive mistake on my part. next time i'll go with what i know.
my suggestion would be to go with the bfg mt's and have them siped.

James was right. I was running the nitto's. 20,000 miles and they were bald. Granted, I am very abusive on tires but I've never had a BFG wear that quick. Learn from my mistake and go with the KO's. I just got a set from discount tire and they ride a hell of alot better than the Nitto's did..

right on man, a set of swampers would have lasted at least that long! i'm curious how long these mtr's are gonna last. they are a bit louder than the km's and i think they are wearing a little uneven.

If you can't have a trail-only rig and a DD, the next best thing is a set of trail-only tires and a set of DD tires. Compromises are exactly that - not great at either purpose, only tolerable at both. Buy BFG AT KOs for the street (even though they're often out of round and a little hard to balance, they're still the most aggressive good-riding tire and wear like iron,) and shop for a set of bias TSLs for the trail - people are always going to a bigger size before wearing their old ones out, so keep an eye on a few for sale forums and you can find some decent shape TSLs for cheap. If you're only using them on the trail, half-tread and cheap/ugly steel wheels will work fine and last forever.
Plus, if you're locked F&R, running the easy trails on your street ATs can add some challenge to it (especially if it's wet) so it's actually fun again. I always ran Rich Mtn on my ATs in my TJ, because if I had run TSLs it would've been downright boring. Plus the sidewall scuffs on the ATs made the Jeep look a little tougher on a daily basis :D

Still my fav are my pro comp x terrians. I absolutely love these tires. In the mud they do great because so much tread hits the ground. Has gotten me out of sticky situations before.

My MTRs had 35k before they were bald. Also would not recommend them. They don't hook up when it's wet.

I have the xterrains as my dd tires and I can not complain about their on/off road performance. Since the terra grapplers are getting such a bad wrap I will most likely get another set of the xterrains over the bfg ko's. I have found the 285's for damn good price of $154.
