My 05 double cab 4x4 tacoma has an intermitant vibration after putting on a 2.5" Daystar Lift. Most noticable between 35 -45 MPH. Not alignment(sp?), done that. Stops when in 4wd. Also stops after some highway miles. Really need to get this mystery solved. Wondering if it is the front hubs or maybe differential?

Please help me.

Did you change your tires/rims? How much lift do you have in the back? Might be the drivline angle.

There are many things it could be..try using the search function to narrow down the problem. The tires may just need to be balanced.

I second that opinion...

I concur, My BFG's have been a PITA to balance. I recieved Dyna beads today and hope they will be the solution to my vibration issue.

Here's the thing. The vibration was there with the stock Dunlop tires and still now with the Toyos. Excuse me for my ignorance but where do I get to the search function?

Scott B can you feel the vibration in the steering wheel and floor boards? I can.

Found the search. No luck.

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm just going to bring it in and pay a fortune for the Toyota Service Dept. to problem solve it for me.

They are probably goin' to tell you to ditch the lift.

Can you tell Where are the vibes coming from? Front? Rear?

They make a 2" drop kit for the front diff, if it is coming from the front, you might want to try that.

I dont think the drop diff is necessary for only 2.5 inches of lift. I am running 3" of lift in the front with my SAWs... With the heavy ARB bumper it is more like 2.5 inches....

Anyway, back to the bad vibes... Did it happen before you got the alignment? Did they loosen anything and not tighten it back up? Check every nut and bolt you see in the front end...

No luck!? Ive seen like 2-3 posts like this in the past two weeks.
Wheel bearing, rear brakes, drums out of round, driveline, balancing, mud packed on inside of wheels, lost weights...

I was conversing with Doug at ToyTec and he said they no longer recommend the diff drop with their 3" lift for the '05 - '06 Tacoma due to vibrations in the front end after installing it.

I have heard on two occasions about Dunlops being difficult to balance. I have never owned Dunlops so i cannot speak from experience.

My problem stems from not being able to attach weights on the outside of the wheel. I have vibes in the steering wheel at 50 to 60mph.
They have been road force balance three times; the hunter 9000 is the way to go but it difficult to find a tech who knows how to use it.

I hope the beads do the trick.

As the man in the tire shop once told me;

"Everything always seems to smooth out at 70"

Hey

I am having the same exact problem as you described

I put new BFG on and have a toytech 2.5 lift

It started after the lift and tires, but well after.

It really started after my last hunting trip where I used my 4x4 80% of the time

It does not make the noise in 4x4

only between 35 - 40mph

I just had the tires rebalanced - vibe is still there

Any clue? Would appreciate some help.

did you install the front diff drop?? if so this is what the toyotek guy told me about their lifts:

when i wrote toyotek to find out about their 3" lifts i asked them about the front diff. drop and this is what they told me about their lift:

"The TAC3-05-AL is one of the best selling kits we have. The Alcan add-a-leafs for the rear are the best fit, and ride from anything we have seen. This kit will work great with your stock brake lines, and shocks. We do have diff drop kits as an option, they are not needed, and most of our kits are sold without them. We determined in our testing the diff drop kit can cause a low speed vibration, and the axle angles without any diff drop kit are not a problem.
We designed these kits for the 05-06 models in September of 2005, they were installed on 6 trucks before we started selling them towards the end of 2005. At that time no one else had them for sale yet. We designed them around our 95-04 Spacers, which we believe out perform any other spacer lift out there. I am not 100% familiar with the Revtek spacers for the 05s, or what their kit uses. I know their older Tacoma kits use a cast spacer that rides metal on metal on top the spring.
We chose to use the stock rubber isolator, so you get a noise free perfect fit. We also use a ½” top plate spacer , and a smaller in the coil spacer for the best ride possible. The ride will be slightly stiffer, but much better than the older Tacoma’s were. If you have any other questions ASK!"

does revtek have the same vibration issues???

I have the toytec 2.5" (didnt drop in the 1/2" top spacer) and my truck was fine UNTIL I got it alligned.

Now I have a vibe that I can feel in the pedals at speeds of 5-65 MPH. Its rythmic, definately associated with wheel speed, and probably on the same scale as a cell phone of vibe. Still trying to get it resolved. Will be trying anything under the sun!

Seems that the guys with the Revtek lift aren't having any issues.

After reading this post, I'm definately going to wait and save up for some coilovers (probably SAW) and run 265/75's @ stock height until then.

I have tried shimming the crossover bearing but the vibe is still there. It lowers the angle at the rear pumpkin but increases the angle at the transmission. I'm thinking about taking out one of the spacers to see if it goes away.

YA, no shit! I just bought one 2 weeks ago and thay sold it to me no porblem. I wil have to call them. I got one hell of a vibration on the highway and pulled over. I thought I had a tire comming off!

I had a horrible shimy up front also. I installed a diff drop and almost all of it went away. Then, I got the truck aligned at a shop that only does alignments and all of it went away.

BTW-

I had a tire shop use a Hunter 9700 road force balancer on my wheels and tires. They did it both ways--Lug and hub centric. First they started with lug. Then remounted the wheels hub, the wheels and tires were still balanced using hub-centric, the same way they were using lug-centric.

Yes.

You NEED the HAWEKA adapter when you balance your lug-centric wheels.

You NEED the Hunter Alignment Table when you align your truck.

That should fix all your problems.

Take your truck to a high end shop that specializes in lifts and wheels/tires.

I would like to take this oppurtunity to thank Cedar Barn for the answer. The answer to the 05 Harmonic Vibration was TTORA member 2Tense. The answer that 2Tense gave me was 3.5 degree shims to adjust my pinion angle. I can now drive my new truck with out feeling like it's a piece of SH@! The pinion has to line up with the drive shaft PERIOD. I would also like to thank TTORA for putting this site up. With out you none of this would be possible.

Enough. 2Tense and Cedarbarn are my new idols.

TTORA is indeed, by far the best Toyota Off-Road wed site.

I'm very happy for you that your situation had been resolved :)
That's what makes TTORA so good... someone runs into a problem, it get addressed, information is shared.

BTW, did you us everything I sent to you?

3.5 degrees of shim to the front pinion or rear pinion?

ToyTec told me about the need for the rear degree shim when I did the 3" with rear AAL's.

Wow, that totally conflicts with what they told me. Also, if you needed it with their lift, why didn't they sell it with the lift??

TacomaGangster

ToyTec is out of control.

It just seems like their lifts are the ones with all the problems.

Maybe because so many people have them compared to other lifts and we don't hear much about the others.

But then again, all spacer lifts SHOULD be the same! :D

My RevTek kit was installed and I have no problems at all.

So i'm having the same shimming problem with my front on my 01 tacoma 4 door. It shimmies at any speed, I notice it the most when i'm slowing down or driving between 30 -45 mph. I use to have a 2" body or puck lift on. Just a couple months ago i put on some ICON COs on the front and OME leaf's on the back. It still shimmies in the front. I get the wheels balanced every two to three months. I got it aligned about three months ago, that didn't fix the problem. So i'm curious what 2tense and barn did to help? if there is any other ideas that would be great.

when do you get the shimmy?

i had a shimmy upon take-off- fixed with 1 piece drive line.

i had a shimmy in the wheel from 55-70mph: new tires and an alignment fixed that. though im not sure if it was an alignment, balance, or wear pattern issue.

way to use the search button, btw.

Okay sorry, now when i think about the terms. It's not a shim it's a vibration in the floor of the truck. When starting off from a complete stop the vibration is strong and works up the steering wheel. Until about 20 mph then it's gone.It seems like a drive line angle problem, that's a guess. What would be the problem and a way to fix it?
