I resently traded in my 97 tacoma for an 05 tacoma. I really haven't tested her out off road yet. :D I would like to hear from guy's that have made the switch. Power is a great improvement but what about off road. The 05 is a sr5 with e-lock and trd off road package. Also has the tow package with extra coolers engine and tranny. 6 speed was a must. ;)

Before you go off road you may want to relocate the 7-pin connector to a protected area. I crushed mine the first time out, not just the mount but the actual plastic connector the wires are placed in. Just a heads up.
have fun, try not to drag her big ass-end.

What is a 7-pin connector and where is it? Sorry, I'm still learning. I guess i could have posted the newbie section but it was already in the thread.

My trailer lights connector (The 7pin) is still alive, but on my third trail run I smacked the rear bumper into the ground pretty hard.
It put a dent in the lower part of the bumper, ripped off the mud flap ($76.00) and pushed the bumper up enough to break the mount tabs off on the right rear tail light.
I put some epoxy on the tail light, bent the bumper back into position, and sprayed some silver on the dented place to cover up the scratches (My bumpers are color matched to the rest of the truck) and yanked off the other three mud flaps. It looks better without them anyhow.
It's fine now, you would have to look really hard to see it.
Hey, just because I wheel it doesn't mean it has to look like shit!
And speaking of wheeling the '05, be sure to checkout my pics! There are three albums in there that have several hundred pics. The link is at the bottom of this post. Click on it and ENJOY!

Before you take out your new 05 be sure to remove the mud flaps. Either you take them off or mother nature will RIP them off. I havent smashed my 7pin yet so I'll have to be careful.

So what was the question?
I have an 06 TRD and all that, and have only played with the 4x once. Nothing "off-road" yet. It would be nice if it would snow, since there isn't a designated ORV closer than 3hrs from me.

It's a great truck with many, many improvements over previous gens and an awesome daily driver / weekend trail scout. As stated above, removing the trailer light plug (7-pin), mudflaps, and re-routing the exhaust crossover pipe are a must :saw:
I've 'wheeled mine alot in the last year and it's great in stock form, but screams to be built up!!! :welder:

As most of you have already said, I too nearly took out my 7-pin plug the first weekend I had the truck. Needless to say, that is why we came up with a high-clearance bumper and hitch receiver that has mounting holes for the 7-pin to be tucked up under the truck. I even towed a 5K+ lb Toy Hauler Trailer up to our event in Johnson Valley last weekend with no problems. I can post pics if anyone is interested.
I have been very impressed by the overall performance of my 05. I was the trail leader on the easy run of our Jamboree and where most trucks were having problems in the sand, I made it seem effortless. Of course the Turbo Charged 05 that was there had no problems either!

Wow. Glag to see that I'm not alone when it comes to breaking in a new truck. I'm egar to try out the E-lock. I hear great things about it. If they had a 411 rear I'd be all over it. First gear in low is pretty ok I guess. Almost drove over my wifes yukon the other day. Practicing.

Very interested as I'm also a big fan of that fine front bumper you guys make ;)
Also, did you ever come up with anything for the corners under the tail lights? Your rear bumper is sweet but that one spot kinda ruins the look for me...

We had fiberglass peices made to fill in the gap, as shown in the attached picture. I'll try to get some pictures of the receiver hitch as well
