Last try since my first 2 posts got lost this is the short short version as I'm sick of posting to myself! Truck got rearended today while stopped by a Rav4 going ~40ish, short list of broked-ness: frame, both leaf packs, driveshaft, box, reciever, tailgate, both bumpers, spare tire mount, and back of cab. If they dont total it I'm gonna try and bargain for an ARB bull bar and a DeMello rear bumper. I'm also going to try and get some re-embursement for the depreciation of the truck following a major accident (any tips on doing this?) If they do total it I'm going to be in the market for a new rig, perhaps a 85 EFI live axle rig? Or anything w/a live axle... Maybe an FJ60 w/a sbc swap... Who knows...

if they do total it then just buy it back from them.... she tboned you i take it? if so then just cut the rear frame off and start over again with that since its kinda weak anyways and you can build yourself a serious rig. i have seen guys do this over and over again in colorado with their trucks and 1. you cant tell it was in an accident(from the portions that are left over.... most instantly turned buggies but yeah you get the point. and 2. they will probably sell it to you for what the salvage value for the steel is worth which is probably going to be about 500 bucks. then you can take all that money and put it right back into your truck and have it better than when you left it. that and GAP insurance should pay off your truck if they do total it...

Well the truck is worth more than I owe on it so Gap insurance shouldnt be a problem. I didnt get T-boned I actually got rearended at about 40ish, I was sitting still. If they do Total it I would consider buying it back and making a wheeling rig out of it... I'll post some pics tomorrow when its light out, I'm kinda sore so I just laid low tonight, its pretty messed up but the RAV-4 was worse, I'll try and upload the pics of the RAV-4 from my phone...

Here's the lengthy description of the damage and the accident... Well yesterday afternoon a guy in a Rav-4 decided my truck was too nice I guess since he decided to run into the back of my truck (stopped at the time) at about 40 or so mph. Here's the rundown on the damage, rear bumper is folded under the truck along with the factory toyota reciever, when the recisver and bumper were impacted the front bolt for the mount sheared off on both sides allowing the bumper and reciever to fold under the truck (folding the rear section of the frame in the process) as the mounts pivoted up they went through the floor of the bed and gashed about an 8" hole on each side inside the bed. The bumper mounts and reciever mounts got hot so hard they bent forward into the shackles and bent the main leaf of both rear spring packs. The box impacted the back of the cab and pushed the back of the cab in about 2" on each side, the drivers side box side doesnt line up correctly to the tailgate anymore, tailgate sustained minor damage, he hit me hard enough to push me 20 or so feet into the truck infront of me, taking out the front bumper, and upper and lower valance up front. When he hit me he hit me so hard either the force of the impack caused the 4x shifter to be smacked into low range or it was my water bottle traveling across the cab like a misile hit it, cant really be sure at this point, but when things came to a rest I was in low range. The reciever also impacted the spare tire mount bending it forward as well. If they dont total the truck (which I dont think they will) I'm going to try and find a body shop that will work with me on getting an ARB bull bar inplace of the factory front bumper and a DeMello Hybrid rear bumper with a reciever added to it in place of the factory rear one and factory reciever. Other than that I might try and get a better set of leafs out of the deal, does anyone make a factory ride height spring thats better than the stock ones? If so I'll probably try and get those too. Truck has a pretty wicked driveline vibration right now, maybe carrier brg or the cv portion of the rear shaft, so I may even get a new driveshaft out of the deal, its also developed a rattle from what seems to be inside the drivers door. I'm gonna head over to my insurance company today and see what they say, since SC is an "at fault" state his insurance will be paying to fix it, and they arent going to like me since I plan to demand all toyota parts, and I'm very very picky about paint work! If anyone knows any really good body shops in the Charleston SC area let me know... Also has anyone ever had any luck being reimbursed from an insurance company for the depreciation incurred after a vehicle has been in an accident? I was just curious, as I may try and get something there as well...

On the bright side, if they decide to total the truck, I found a replacement out in Arizona, 1987 X-tra Cab short box 4x4 with a 22RTE I have always wanted a turbo truck! I think it'd be fun! Oh and as an update the frame is bent right above the axle right where it goes from c channel to boxed! Pics are uploading to photo bucket now, soon to follow...

When I had a front end collision I had the dealership that fixed my truck cut me a check for the difference between my deductible (~250) and the cost of a new factory bumper. I then used that money toward a new ARB front bumper. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do the same.

I wont be paying a deductible, do you remember what the cost of a factory front bumper with all the brackets and both valances it? Is it anywhere close to the cost of the ARB?

The 22rte is a fun motor. I'm running one in my 85. It does pretty well on the highway for having 4.56's and 37's, even better on the trail... though the turbo hardly ever spools on the trail. Sounds pretty good too.

Your cab sure rusted fast.

Damn that's a bitch... Another turd destroyed and I still don't have an e Locker axle... LOL... Looks to me it may be total'd for insurance purposes... as the cab would be too costly to replace... And it looks to me like the cab structure has been compromised... Bondo may not work here... LOL... But it looks to me that the truck has a ton of life left and would make a good trail rig... and there is a ton of useable parts... doubt the insurance would let you have it too cheaply... It could get quite a bit at an auction I'd think... Guess you'll have to wait and see... For a DD I'd probably try to get outta it... shiat is never right after a hard hit and months later other problems can arise... But for a trail rig... perfect... you would'nt have to worry about further damages... LOL... Don't let the insurance screw ya over... them bastards... LOL
im pretty sure its totalled, mine had almost the exact same damage except the spare got pushed out between the shocks and the frame was creased in several places. did the reclining mechanisims break in the seats?

They (seats) seem to be ok so far, and my spare did actually get pushed up inbetween the shocks as well... However, its making a funny noise in the transmission, and the drivers door has what sounds like a window frame rattle now, you can only hear it w/the window down.

I'd agree its perfect for a trail rig! But I didnt pay nearly 17k for a trail rig either... I doubt if they total it that it would be cheap to buy back... Like I said I'm already looking into other trucks if they decide not to fix it...

It rained all day after I got hit, and all night, bare metal tends to rust pretty fast like that! Along with the free rear lift comes the fact that it has no wheel travel out back since the shackles are still up against the reciever so it rides like a tractor now.

All in all its really not all THAT bad, but its not that good either, my gripe is that they're never the same ever again, yes frames can be straightened, beds replaced, cab pulled out and repainted, but its not like it was when it was built ever again. Even worse I have to deal with someone else's insurance company for the repairs etc... since SC is an at fault state...

I was curious how the 22RTE handles and drives down the road with larger tires... With the 4.56's and 37's can you use 5th at all? How is the power for a truck that would be a driver on 33's or 35's?

5th is used for what its, a crusing gear. if I need to get up a hill or pass, just down shift and I'm in the turbo :) WHEEEE! Hell if I downshift to 3rd, its really fun! WHEN I break a ring/pinon gear I'll go to 4:88's or 5:29's. It'll be a gas hog but it'll get going and hell my crawl ratio will be great. By that time It'll be a trailer queen for big runs anyways. Put it this way, the 22rte has just enough more power from the 22re, that with the 4:56's and 37's its not really a problem around town, or on the highway. the speedo is only 5% off. The truck has surprised everyone I've driven with on the road and its power with those tires.

I'm glad to hear that the 22RTE can pull with only 4.56's and 37's like that, I really want that 87, I have always wanted a factory turbo truck! I love my Tacoma and all its very plush, but it doesnt feel like all the older Toyota's I've owned, it feels much cheaper and like Toyota has started cutting corners, I dont like that. At this point I think I'd be just as happy in a 1987 Xtra Cab Turbo truck with some lift and 33's or 35's... We'll see what the insurance company does...

Shhhhh! Dont say that so loud! (as I close the window that had All Pro's SAS kits for early trucks on it) 37's might be pushing it, mostly cus I have a set of 35" Ground Hawgs already mounted on 15x10" wheels, and a set of 5 33x12.50's BGF A/T's on rims as well for road trip tires, Whatever lift it gets will probably be suspension, how much lift do you have w/your 37's? Just the 5" springs and cutting or do you have BL too? I have been tempted to SAS it though, we'll see that is a long way off I dont know if they're fixing my truck yet!

I would like to be more pussified... Being locked all the time can get annoying to say the least... Mostly that drive line bind... It makes me realize something else is going south... I just haven't figured out what it is... Got to be in the clutch or hydraulics... It's not u-joints or anything else on the driveshaft... Could be too much run out on the R & P (doubt that though)... I need to start with the clutch/hydraulics first... Need to figure it out before I take the pig back in the dirt... Although off road less noticable... But on the street... I'm tired of shifting like a grandpa to engage things smoothly... But other than those issues... The LockRight and the 8.4 axle really are a great trail advantage...

Vette is in the process of getting a 408 inch stroker motor, should put down somewhere around 500-550 at the rear tires when its back together and running. It has gone a best of 11.56 @121.1 with the stock short block w/only a head swap and cam. Should be well in the 10's now. Chevelle makes 800 ish at the tires, its hard to dyno, it spins a lot on the rollers...

Sometimes I seem to get lucky when things look really bad! The person who hit me has Met Life insurance, they dont have a local office here in Charleston, its located in North Carolina, so they sent an independent adjustor to come and look at the truck, which turns out to be great because he doesnt care how much he costs Met life! Here is the rundown for what he figgures the truck needs, front bumper w/all brackets and both valances, a FULL FRAME w/all cross members, full bed w/tailgate right from toyota, new spray in bedliner, new tailgate, both rear leaf packs w/shackles, new reciever, new rear bumper w/all brackets, new extended cab cab sides, new rear drive shaft, new 5 speed and clutch, new transfer case, 4 wheel alignment, frame rack time to make sure the cab and core support are straight, and time to look into the rattle in the drivers door. In other words he's going to try and total the truck for me which is cool, I dont want it back if they're going to change the frame, and I dont really want it back if they fix the old frame, so now I'm in the market for another truck! Anyone have an 01-04 Extended Cab TRD 5sp SR-5 V-6 truck for sale?

The sad thing is everything you described is the same on my truck, so if i ever get into an accident where an insurance adjuster looks at it, it will probably be totaled.

Yeah it sucks, and it doesnt, I dont want to be paying each month on a truck that is pieced together, but yet I love my truck, I hope to find another one like it, or maybe another earlier model, we'll see... Too soon to tell at this point what I'll get next!

Out of curiousity could you let us know what the buy back is? Maybe you could buy it back, then buying another truck with a blown engine or something and swap it. Or Part it out.
Good Luck

I am considering buying it back, if anyone is interested in buying it I'll post the buy back cost if it is too steep for my blood, the truck is super fixable, and I've put 1,000 miles on it since I got hit only needs minor mechanical to be 100% cosmetic would be the expensive part, but it could be a cheap truck for someone willing to work on it, I'm only willing to give them about 5 grand for it max...

Well the person who hit me told his insurance company some line of BS so fineally now that it is straightened out they agreed that he was 100% at fault and agreed to pay me for the truck that was deemed a "total loss" so in the next few days I should know how much they are willing to pay me for the truck and how much buy back is, I'll keep everone posted! Yay I get to buy another truck w/more goodies than mine had!

I dont think its speeding tickets I'll have to worry about, maybe a ticket for smoking the tires... I have a feeling its going to be hard on rubber w/the way I drive!
