my rr wheel is still leaking gear lube after I just changed the wheel seal and Oring last week. The leak is doing MUCH better now though. I originally thought the heat from the Oxy/Actyl torch damaged the seal, but it's replaced and still leaking.... a fraction of the original leak, but still leaking. Any ideas on what to look at now? It seems to leak only when you drive it. It gets up in th drum and seeps out from the threaded holes in the drum that you use to pull the drum with bolts.

Did you let the axle shaft hit, sit, or rub the seal while replacing the shaft? It could be your wheel cyl. leaking since you just changed the axle seal. Another thing is you may have damaged the seal when you installed it, done that before on a rean main on my old Mustang and had to pull the trans twice in a week. Good Luck

it's gear lube leaking, not brake fluid. I was very careful to not let the axle hit, sit or touch the seal. I'm thinking the bearing holder thats pressed on might of gotten damaged by the machine shop who pressed in the new wheel bearings and outer seals. Another theory is b/c it's such a little amount now compare to before... there is still gear lube outward of the inner seal and maybe it's just left over lube getting thrown out. I'm gonna leave it be for now... check it in a few more days, clean it again and then see how it's doing in a week or 2

Give it a little time and if it does not stop change the seal one last time. If that does not cure it then you may have a bent axle housingthat is side loading the seal causing the leak. :2cents:

I had the same thing happen. make sure you use a good replacement seal. Also the bearing will hold gear oil and leak a while after the seal change. Mine did and now the bearing is dry and needs to be changed again.

Yeah, mine was leaking after i got my locker installed. like willy mamoth said, get the toyota seal if you replace it.($6) the worst part is that the dam oil leaks into your brakes and that side is pretty much useless, so you'll know if it keeps leaking.

I'm hoping it's just a bit of left over gear lube in the bearing or whatever. but do I have to change the bearing out now? b/c what lubes those sealed bearings exactly?... let me guess they come packed with special lube/grease and then after the gear lube gets in, washes it out... it dries up and the bearing will go to hell? OH, I only use Toyota Bearings and Seals.

SOB.... well i guess 1st task is getting the leak stopped. my luck i'll get the leak stopped, go to replace the bearing and then it'll start leaking again. This is a PITA. Are Full floaters like this?

You can repack the bearings with disk brake wheel bearing grease. You need to be very carefull not to drag the axle over the seal or it will damage it causing it to leak.
I wounder if it is possible to do a double lip seal instead of the single.
Also check your diff vent to make sure it is clear or pressure will build up and push oil out the seals.

How long has it been since you changed the seal? and there is a retainer colar on the bearing? That is were the seal rides.
You could pull the axle out and see if there is oil on that side of the bearing. Dry it off and repack the bearing. Then see if you still have a leak.
I would think the bearing may still have oil in it which will take time to dry out.

only been about 1 week since I changed the seal. and 1 tank of gas if that. so Do i really need to change the bearing out if the leak is stopped?

If the leak has stopped that meens the seal fixed it, but it also meens the bearing is now dry. You should either change the bearing or repack it before it gets rough.
Pull the axle and spin the bearing to hear and feel if it is rough. If it is you should replace it. Otherwise repack it.
The dust seal should come right off with a small screwdriver.

you could get the new diamond housing for the rear cos they incorporated 2 seals per side on the new design. One at the outter and one at the diff
