View Full Version : '06 Rear Drive Shaft Angle

It seems that 3" of lift in the rear is not working out too well for the reg. cab.
(single shaft .vs split for the A & D cab)
I had Jason (Demello Offroad) fix me up with custom Deaver 12 pack for the rear to accommodate for the amount of weight I will have in the bed. It turns out the springs didn't flatten out that much like the stock ones do. In fact, it put the pinion in a downward angle.
What does this do? in 4th gear anything over 40 mph (around 2000rpm), lift your foot off the gas pedal and it sounds like a throw-out bearing went bad or like the gears on the trans. are dancing around. 5th gear over 50 mph... forget about it... I had to pull off the road just to make sure I still had a transfer case.
I filled Jason in, he contacted Deaver, I received 2 two degree angle shims. I was not impressed (we'll leave it at that), I machined two more at 3 degrees, it did fix the angle at the pinion, but not the yoke... I still have the wandering/sloppy gear sound...
I was going thru the TTORA sponsors, and clicked on Inchworm. They have a Electric Locker - "High Pinion"... I'm not sure if it will work in my rear axle, but it may help change the angle of the drive shaft at the transfer case. I'll give them a call first of the week.
Cedarbarn, chime in, I think we're the only one's with reg. cabs that did mods... Have you experienced anything like this?
Edit Note; The shims came for Deaver, Demello did not manufacture them, they just did the shipping.

Bump to get this problem resolved? has anyone had this problem with the new 05's? keep in mind this is a single cab (one piece drive shaft)

Jason, GOOD NEWS :) , Jeff @ Deaver told me to call Jesse @ High Angle Drive line (http://www.highangledriveline.com/). Jesse knows exactly what I'm experiencing, I'll need to take a few measurements and pictures. I'll keep you updated, just incase someone needs this info in the furture.

I would be intrested in the 2 degree shims if your looking to offload them. I am trying to track down a vibration in my C-Cab and one of the suggestions was drive shaft angle. If so PM me with info and preferred method of payment.

EndersTaco,
Email me you shipping address omegaoneresearch@bellsouth.net put "tacoma" in the subject (so I don't delete it).
The shims were sent to me for free, I'll send them to you for free. You may need to get new center pins for the springs, if there is not enough threads showing to add a collar at the base.

Yea,
Sounds like this could be fixed withthe right driveshaft. Please keep us updated on what happens.

I got an '05 reg cab 4x4 and it does make that odd, loose gears noise like an old electric train. After reading this thread, it all makes sense now, cause when i had load of stuff in the back i never noticed it...now it does it all the time above 63 mph with light throttle or on decel. Hitting gas silences it...
Originally i blamed rear end, but now im going to load up the back and try again, and see if its making that noise.

Update;
Keep in mind I'm dealing with a unique situation (Reg. Cab),
the Deaver 12 pack was built for 3" of lift and weight in the bed. Anyone mounting up the 10 pack may not experience this.
First thing, the estimated weight I planned on is not in place. I won't receive the "Tire Gate" until 3/6, the dual fuel can mount is not ready, the rear light/jack mount bar is not in.
The springs are so beefy, that it put the pinion in a downward angle (- degree). I installed a pair of 3 degree angle shims, that put the pinion at maybe 0 or 1+ degrees from stock (still had the gear slap). This past weekend I removed that and slipped in a set of 4.5 degree shims, that helped alot. The gear slap is only apparent when I lifted off the pedal in 5th @ 60mph. To make the drive shaft and the pinion perfectly inline, I may need to go to 5.5 degrees.
So, tonight I picked up 280 lbs. of bagged dirt to simulate the load. In hopes that it will compress/flatten the springs, in essence kick up the pinion to the desire angle (I'll know tomorrow). I've talked to two drive line specialist, I'm told that the drive shaft needs to be straight with the pinion (not to exceed a max of 8 degrees total at both ends combined). If the added weight doen't work, I'll need to have a double CV joint drive shaft made to compensate for the angle at the transfer case.
For those that care, I'll keep ya posted til it's right.

Please keep us updated on the results. I am prolly going to order a reg cab 4x4 in about three months and I want to lift and mod it right away. Your truck sounds like it is going to be pretty sweet. You need to post some pics for us.
thanks

I have my fingers crossed that the added weight works, so I don't have to order a new drive shaft. The 280 lbs. of dirt may exceed the weight of components to be added, this gives me an excellent excuse for the wife why I need to spend more on my project, "Hey sweetheart, I need just a little bit more weight in the ass end of the truck. Another winch would ready do the trick, plus you never know... sometimes you just need to pull your ass out backwards." ;)

I like your way of thinking.
Let us know how the bags worked.

So........did the 280 pounds work or not? If it worked could one achieve similar results by shimming the axle a few more degrees so the pinion lines up with the drive shaft or is a completely new shaft going to be necessary for a lifted regualr cab.
I carry enough extra weight in the ass of my pants, I don't want to have to carry more in the ass of my truck :)

Well, here's what I have so far.
The 280lbs. didn't do much as far as the pinion angle (stiff ass springs) but, the ride is so much better.
Deaver (one outstanding company) send me new U-bolts (little longer) and center pins (to add collars for the added thickness of the shims) at no charge for what I'm about to try. I'll be installing 6 degree shims this Sunday, that should put the pinion and drive shaft parallel. Keep in mind that the 4.5 degree shim made a major improvement over the 3 degree (in my case).
Scott @ Deaver said "I know who you are, the dude with the reg. cab., we built those springs for some serious weight". :) winch and battery (wife doesn't know about the battery) are now a must.
I also have Demello send a set of 7100 series Bilstien (click) (http://www.tacomaterritory.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26675) cause I did notice a difference in the handling characteristics with the add weight.

I've been receiving quite a few email/PM's regarding my situation, so here's the latest.
Pulled the springs back out, installed the new center pins to accommodate the collars for the added thickness of the 6 degree shims. After installing the new shims, Bilstien 7100's and putting dirt bags back, the pinion and drive shaft are now inline.
I almost thought the gear slap was gone, until I got on the interstate, had the truck at 65/70 mph in 5th and backed off the pedal, the demon showed it's face. Although the slap wasn't as loud as before (could be from the hum from the Mud Grapplers) it's still not right. I may be anal, but I've spent too much money, doing things the right way to ignore what I heard.
I called Troy back from Tom Wood's Custom Drive Shafts (http://www.4xshaft.com/) told him what's going on, long story short, I'll have a new drive shaft with a Double Cardan Conversion and the slip yoke at the pinion delivered to me by Thursday 2/16. Just to let ya know, Troy really knows his business, has patience and will work with you. I told him this need to be a bolt on, an extra $100 we now have adapters. I also asked Troy to keep a record of what he's making for me so other TTORA members with the reg. cab
have a quick fix.
next post on the matter... Friday ;)

Troy @ Tom Wood's Custom Drive Shafts did me right, custom rear shaft for the 05/06 Reg. Cab., adapter plates for the pinion and transfer, slip yolk at the pinion, double cardan (CV) at the transfer. Make sure the pinion & drive shaft are inline (use angle shims or cut/reweld perches), install the Tom Wood's shaft, you're done... no more gear slap...
Special thanks to Jason Demello (http://www.demello-offroad.com/catalog/) (and crew), Scott/Jeff @ Deaver (http://www.deaverspring.com/index.htm), Troy @ 4Xshaft (http://www.4xshaft.com/index.html).

My truck at highway speed, without any load on the rear drive train (coasting at highway speed), there is noise from the rear because of the driveline angle.
At 17,000 miles after the lift we installed a lockrite in my rear third member. Did not notice anything amiss in the rear.

Woo Hoo! My hero! Guys like you sure make it easy for the rest of us. Glad to hear the DS fixed the problem. I am keeping a list of the mods you and Cedarbarn have done. When I finally get my truck, I'll go down the list and get all my mods and know they will work. Thanks for posting.
