Today's mail brought me some new Bushwacker (paintable but came in black)fender flares for my '98 Taco. I mounted them, looked for a while, and then decided that the black looks kinda cheap. My neighbor has a '06 Taco with color matched fender flares and I guess that was the look I was going for.. I called a few paint shops to see what they would charge to spray them and I didn't have one quote under 350.00!

I found a website: http://www.paintscratch.com/ that sells the original paint colors in a rattle can. Anyone ever tried this stuff? They have a "prep kit" that includes two cans of primer and two of the '98 Tacoma Red for 50.00. I called them and asked about painting automotive plastic and was told it should work fine.

If I was to take my time and do it right, I think it may come out looking good. But I'm afraid if ruining my 300 dollar flares with cheap paint.

Thanks for the help, Rob

To do it right you want to have some flex additive in there. You're not going to ruin the flares with paint, you can always sand them down and start over.

flex additive - never heard of it. sounds like i would need to mix it and spray it myself? a buddy of mine lets me use his garage and tools for beer. maybe I should involve him in this and use a spray gun...

thanks for the site, have to check that out-- lunar mist is hard to come by in a rattle can.
I am looking to do the same thing but was told something like 'bulldog'-- an adhesion promotor was also necessary.
and I agree- sanding your flares back down is alot easier than getting your 350 back from the paint guy.

Go to a local automotive paint supply house, tell them what you are doing and what color you want and they will mix up a few rattle cans with the flex additive and your color on the spot for you..About 16 bucks a can in SoCal

Ask them questions,prep,paint,care...etc
These guys are a wealth of knowledge...

If you cant find one call a few autobody shops and asked them the name of a local automotive paint supplier

Your going to need to primer those as well... Or the lunar mist will come out the wrong shade...

I would worry more about the paint not sticking at all  then being the wrong shade....LOL

Looks like the non-metal w/primer kit comes with rubberized primer and adhesion promoter and base coat and clear coat and thinner and wax/grease remover. Total was $68 for radiant red. Didn't order any but eventually maybe if I ever get cut-out flares. Thanks for the link. Looks like they have everything covered. I'm guessing the rubberized primer is like the flex additive. They're all separate spray cans tho.
