View Full Version : Tow Hook Bolt Q's
I am having trouble finding Grade 8 12mmX1.25X80 bolts to replace my stock tow hooks. I was told grade 8 bolts in metric sizes are reffered to as 10.9. I can find metric grade 8.8 but I'm told this only eguals a standard grade 5 bolt. Do I really need the 10.9 or will the 8.8 work? This bolt stuff is a little out of my scope so any help would be greatly welcomed.

The 12mm bolt is .472 diameter so I'm giving you .500 bolt shear info (sorry I don't have exact metric numbers).
The 12mm bolts will be just little bit less than the number below.
Grade 5 is 14,730lbs of shear force.
Grade 8 is 17,874lbs of shear force.
I believe the grade 5 bolts (assuming 2 bolts per hook) should be fine for what your doing even if you subtract 10% because the above numbers are for a .500 diameter bolt instead of a .472 (12mm).

I found them at an Ace Hardware.
Toyota also stocks them.

Try ABABA BOLT (a-babba) in Elcajon , They are on Pioneer way ,They got hardware stacked to the rafters . 619 440-1781
All they had was the 8.8 hardness. I went ahead and picked those up.

Having the same issue. Lowe's in Mission Valley stocks the 8.8, but they don't have a lot of them. They're around $5.62/each. Don't know if that's a lot or not, but gotta get em.

good luck, LOL I gave up long ago and drilled them out and retapped them for bolts that I could actually find.
what length do you need? I might have some in my bolt box.

Just realized that this was in the late Tacoma section--I have a 2003. I went to Lowe's to pickup the M12 x 1.25 x 80mm bolts--grade 5 (8.8). When I got there, I realized that they were way too long, so I went with 70mm (60mm was too short). This made the bolts slightly longer than the stock ones, but very close.
When I got home, I found out that "slightly" was too much, so I just added an extra washer to them. Unfortunately, you can't use the original washers from the stock bolts as they're pretty much locked onto them.
In the end, I used one of the Grade 8 bolts and one of the grade 5 (with two washers) on each of the tow hooks. I then tightened those guys until they couldn't be tightened no more. Seems that having one of the grade 8's on each side will help for the lesser strength grade 5's.
