Does anybody know where to get a rebuild kit for an IFS steering box? Both Napa and the yota dealer said there is no such thing and I tried emailing the guy from Frankentaco's website but got no response. :dunno:

Well I found out that my dealer was full of shit and found the seal kit on toyotapartssales.com (what a cool site). Does anyone know if this is all the seals and gaskets needed to do a rebuild or are there any additional parts that are needed?
Thanks again
Joe

if you don't know what your box came from good luck....this is what i found when i was looking into rebuild kits this is From Chris King here on he board
There are about 20-some different gasket kits for the three styles of box you might have (worm, cross shaft, recirc ball) covering all those years. Do you have the VIN from the vehicle you picked it from?
Here's an example from just 1986:
86 4Runner
Worm box kits:
04044-35071, 04044-35061, 04044-35100, 04044-60080, 04044-60090
Cross shaft box kits:
04455-35020, 04455-35030, 04455-35040, 04455-35050
Recircualting ball box kits:
04445-35020, 04445-35030, 04445-35060, 04445-35070, 04445-35080
To further complicate things, if you are looking for the bushings, bearings, etc.; that's a whole other set of variables.
If you can help me zero in on what exactly you have and need I can better identify the correct parts you need.

Well it came from a '93 or '94 truck but the VIN is long gone. I was just looking for the seals/gaskets because I am getting ready to tap it for hydro assist and thought I would replace that stuff while I had it apart. Kinda just a precautionary step before I mount it to the truck and something's screwed up in it.
Thanks for the help

Had a guy send me this a few months ago when I was sourcing parts for my SAC. Great info and even has an e-mail addy for a guy you can get the kit from.
I sent mine to PSC (great guys) to have it ported and capped for hydro assist in the future prior to my swap and they have to rebuild it in the process since they take it completely apart.
Good luck

is there a way to know what we need without knowing the vin? I hope so...

Well I talked to the guys at Toyota of Dallas and they think that I ordered the right seal kit so I guess I can only see and just document what is missing out of the kit if anything. I am just looking to replace any major seals in there that might cause leaks/bad performance down the road.

For future reference...
I ordered a seal kit from Toyota for my '93 IFS box and it was complete for the most part...the only thing missing was the teflon rings that go on the inner part of the input shaft and the o-ring that goes on the cap that holds the input shaft together. Other than that it had all of the parts.

Does anyone know if the input seals are the same for the boxes or are there multipule kits for them too? This is where my box is leaking...

Just got my rebuild kit part #04445-35130. Anyone else get the same one and use it with no missing pieces? I asked for a rebuild kit for a 93 4x4.
How much are you paying for these seal kits? I'm just curious because I picked up one from... steering something or other? for 40 bucks. All of the VIN so and so specific kits I found were over $80, to me thats not worth messing with all those little balls. I reused the o-rings since that was all that was jacked up on mine, got all those damn balls put back in it (I think) and put it back together.
Thats the other question I have about Chris' information- don't they all have a worm gear AND recirculating ball?... and maybe a cross shaft, whatever that is.
When I tore mine apart it had a worm gear inside of the recirculating balls thingamajigger, but looking at the stuff on Marlin's site it looks like you can remove the whole recirculating ball/steering shaft/worm gear mechanism w/out taking the gear out of the recirc ball section, etc.
Its just confusing if you ask me. Further that with someone telling me that all of those recirculating balls aren't the same size. Like a thousandth difference every other one or some shit..., I don't know.

Regular price is $59.14. I got mine for $47.31.
I'm all confused about the different boxes as well. The sites I've been referring to on the rebuild is:
http://128.83.80.200/taco/box.html
http://www.wildyoats.com/hydraulic_assist_tech.htm
and the marlin one: http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=10579.0
I've got a junk box in the garage I smoked the seals in, I need to yank that thing apart and settle once and for all in my mind whether you can get that whole assembly, sans balls everywhere, out like it shows the guys doing on Marlin's site. I know it has the recirculating balls.. the half of them that didn't stay on the concrete I had to dig out of the gravel.

Note to self: take it apart in a bucket. Got it.

And sector shaft first... I didn't know that at the time.

Finally, had some time to finish rebuilding my tapped steering box. Only issue was with the worm gear but, finally got all the BB's fitted. However, anyone know how many "BB's" are suppose to be in the worm gear valve body? I counted 44. Hope I didn't drop one or two or three.... In any case, it took a few tries to have them fit and running smoothly.
