Would an old receiver hitch work as the center for a front hanger? They're beefy and you can weld on spring mounts on the ends. Your thought please. If it can't or wouldn't be a good idea to use, How much can a good beefy hanger be made for?

It would probably be cheaper to buy a mass produced one like Marlins than have one custom fabbed. Unless you have the ability to do all of the welding ect.

Yep, It can and has been done. I made one...mocked one up using the reese hitch and some 3" Square tube. The hardest part is keeping it square while laying down the big welds.

Cool, ever noticed how wide the hitch on Ford Expedtions are? They would give lots a extra room to play with. Next time I'm in SC I'll cut one or two off something in my uncles junk yard.

a 3" drop on the hanger might give you some castor problems. make sure you get some big shackles if you are going to do this. if this is a dd, you might want to look into the marlin or trail-gear kit. $195 to your door.

^ trying to incite a follow up... are you gonna make your own. If so, use some rear hangers. i could try to cut mine so they can be used again. cutting off the rear susp. next weekend so let me know. :saw:

I think Neil will be making my hanger and it should be close to same as Trail Gear/Marlin.

Spring hanger kit allows mounting of leaf springs on 1986 - 1995 Toyota Pickup and 4Runner. Kit includes front 1" drop front hanger, offset front shackles, frame tubes, frame jigs and bushings.

what marlin says^ you are 2" drop higher w/ a 3" sq tube. just remember geometry of triangles and stuff so you don't get surprised by an excess pos. castor. (3" drop over stock needs a 3" LIFT shackle... but the 45* shackle angle will get higher w/ the longer shackle and calculations will be based on that new angle... i could do it for you but i'm studying for a physics test)
