View Full Version : Funny exhaust smell

Occassionally, I'll notice when I get out of my truck that there is a funny smell from the exhaust. Like sulphur. More specifically, it smells like the catalytic converter is playing with unburnt fuel. The first time it happened was around 650-800 miles. I pretty much floored the truck for about 3 seconds while merging and I noticed the odor very strongly. It's happened a few more times since then with normal driving and it's been rather mild.

Should this be a concern? I have a Borla catback exhaust installed, though I don't think this is the culprit. My MPG pretty much sucks, though admittedly I only have 1700 miles on the truck and really don't expect the mileage to pick up until around 3000. Could the shitty mileage be related to the odor problem? If so, it would make sense if I'm pushing unburnt fuel out of my exhaust...

Thanks!

I've noticed the sulfur smell more than a few times too, but only after strong acceleration. I just figured it was normal, but I don't really know.

There is a TSB for the exhaust on the '05 trucks, might apply to yours as well. The dealer will replace the cats. The number is EG034-05 "Excessive Sulfur Dioxide Odor". I would post the pdf of the TSB, but the board will now allow me to upload it, too large.

Let me go check with my service department on that TSB. If it was issued before 12/09/05 then it should have been done to my truck, as it was PDI'd on that date. Dealer service departments are required to perform all TSBs on all vehicles that are on the lot before they are sold.

Just got off the phone with the service department. No TSBs for 2006 Tacomas.

Maybe it's just normal.

Thanks for the input!

If this is indeed the case all of you late model folks had better get it handleded under warranty if it applies to you. Toyota wants and arm and a leg for new cats. Do remember that all of you should still be under the emissions systems warranty even if your basic comprehensive warranty has expired so don't let any dealerships pull a fast one on ya. I'm sure some will try although I don't know why.

Yes that is true, the TSB is covered under the emissions warranty which is 8 years or 80k miles.
