Today I got the new Car & Driver and they had a write-up with the new Toyota FJ Cruiser in there. It got 3'rd out of 4 in a off-road challenge of sorts. Basically would have won, but it was too good off-road...if that makes any sense.

So the justification for the Jeep getting 2nd place in this off road test of off-road style SUV's was that it was smoother on the road!?!?!
They complained about it's crappy driveline (open diffs, no manual option, ...), and about it's lack of ground clearance and said it had tires better suited for the race track.

The H3 was the vehicle that got this whole test started, with it's engineers claiming that it could best any of the "real" SUV's on the market. It had the best appraoch and departure angles, second best ground clearance and they said it was the most capable off road. So it got 4th for poor acceleration and because it was loud at WOT. It is equipt with a manual tranny, locking diffs and a deep reduction transfer.

The X-terra was the best combo of off and on road, fastest and quitest.

They liked the FJ, but it was probably to loud and not car-like enough on the road.
No wonder I don't read any of that magazine anymore!!

Buncha duche-bags!!!!

Pretty lamo. They really did say that the main reasons for the order picked was on road handling. Baffeling, the whole first page talks about how they only picked the ones that would go good off road, then they bash the ones that are good at it.

LOL so if you reverse that order you get the "real" order. cool.

Why would car and driver know anything about off road? Are there at least cool pics?

x2 Can you say Oxymoron? I wouldnt take any info from Car and Driver on anything off-road related. Take their results and reverse them and thats prob. close to how it really is

Yea, I just read the article and think it's dumb. But if you look at Motor Trend they did the same comparision but the only difference was they and a jeep liberty and not a grand cherokee. The FJ got first place beating out the Xterra (their sport ute of the year), the H3 and then the liberty. Goes to so you that everyone has their own opinion about things and the only way you now what's best for you is to try it for yourself.

I'll wait till each of the models is ten years old and then drive them and make my decision. I still have a '99 Tacoma to use up.

Car & Driver is a bullshit mag. They'll test a Ferrari 360 and then bitch about how it doesn't have a backseat. Morons.

The FJ will be the only one worth buying in ten years, the others will be on their last legs by then.

Yeah the H3 will be dead, the Heep will be near death, and the Nissan and Toyota will still be going.

The H3's and 2's for that matter did well at Tellico this weekend. But due to being GM products I still hold they will be dead in 10 years :D

When the magazine being qouted was "Car and Driver" I knew that road manners were going to be how they cars were tested.

Its like asking a truck driver to take a Ferrari for a test drive rating it against American muscle. Obviously the car with the most gears, most torque, and greatest pulling capacity is going to win, no matter what the 1/4 mile is, or what the trap speed through the cones is, or how many G's it can take in the corners. Why? Because its truck driver testing it out, the truck driver will never try to drive it around the track at 150+ mph to see how stable it is coming out of the corners, nor could he safely.

Like wise, Car and Driver enthusiests are not going to drive the Rubicon, Fordyce, Moab, Tellico or any other trail for that matter. Most would have no clue what to do when they got there, or how to really test the capabilities of the vehicles. Most likely complain that each one got "high centered" on the first rock they tried to drive over and then promptly flunk them all.

My two cents.
Wally

As long as it can tow my Toyota to the trail for two more years I'm good.
