I'll say! I want one. Have been feeling my axle unload quite a bit more recently, not sure if it's the weather...

Looks like from his site about $395. Not bad considering with my chevys I feel some axle wrap.
Check it out www.budbuilt.com

Have you greased your slipjoint? That helps quite a bit.

Yeah, it's been freshly greased. Things have cooled down recently though so it may not be slipping as easily as it was before the cool down.

I wonder what that clocking does to the driveshaft tho.

That does look nice. Looks like it creates a few more inches of clearance for the tcase. NOt a bad idea.

Clocking has no effect on the rear shaft and raises the front shaft in a clockwise (looking from back to front) manner.

Well I assume since they market and sell it, the effects can't be that bad...if any. I know guys who run clocked cases on other rigs and have never hard problems.

Yeah, but how the hell are you supposed to shift? I'm guessing this is designed around the pushbutton 4wd? My transfer shifter would be pretty useless if I tried to do that...

It's pretty easy to cut and re-weld the shifter in a better location. I have done this before :D

the shifter is cut off at the top of the case and you have to weld in an adaptor that changes the position of the shifter back to where was originally. They are working on a kit for this.

GEEEZ he originally quoted me 269 for that trac. bar but i guess that was about 2 months ago and he said he wasn't sure totally of the price. That is a hell of a design though.

My question is, What does the front of that trac bar bolt to, if it is the crossmember that the carrier bearing mounts to, I would suggest some serious reinforcement. That is transfering alot of pressure to that crossmember that it was never designed to take... Just a thought, but it does look really nice the way it mounts to the diff without welding to it....

yes, I believe it goes to that crossmember...or whatever the nearest one is. its raining out or I'd go look ;)

It's just 'pushing' up & down on that crossmember, and if you think of the leverage you have with a bar that long, it doesn't take much to control wrap. With mine disconnected I can wrap the leafs pretty good (by hand). :D

What I talked to Bud about it, he has been testing these traction bars for a while, now I don't know how long one has been on a Tacoma, but all I know is that if Bud builds it, the thing is freaking quality.

What I was trying to say (to Brant) was that "I made mine about 1.5 years ago and no problems using that crossmember" ;)

You are correct about the leverage thing, except that the leverage would be coming from the other end. Putting the leverage on the crossmember not on the axle.... I just know that when we built Charga71's anti-wrap bar we braced the crap out of the crossmember just to be sure. Mainly cause we know that when you ask for something out of a crossmember or brace that it wasn't designed for, you usaullly don't get the results that you want...

I can vouch for Bud, wholeheartedly. :)
I met him from the old days of the LCML list at ORC.com.
Turned out he only lived about 30mi from me.
I've known him for several years, just as he started getting BudBuilt going.
His work and ideas are TOPNOTCH!!
His customer service is EXCELLENT!
He was/is a Manufacturing Engineer, and he REALLY believes in keeping things simple yet sturdy/overbuilt. He markets products for people who can and do wrench on there own trucks, but who may lack fabricating skills and/or equipment.
He does the best he can with prices, but the whole China thing and steel prices are still an issue for him.
I dont think you will find ANY better vendor to order from.
He just recently got his hands on a Tacoma that he will be building up to wheel, and especially for product development. Expect to see many more great Tacoma products from him.
He's currently cooking up a dual transmission adapter (yes, I said TRANSMISSION).
If it flies, I'm sure there will probably be one available for you hardcore Taco guys.
Bud's just a great guy to do business with, to wheel with, and especially to know personally.
Ok, I'm off my soap box now. :)

Heres the thread on POR, if you guys havent seen it yet:
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=132841
The end of page 3, csudman finally got his homebrew adapter and trannies installed. Looks sweet!
I did a little math, and with a W56 in the front, and an R151/stock tcase at the back, with 4.10 stock gears....I came up with 159.20 crawl ratio, and a hi 5th overdrive of .706... :D
Thats a sweet range to run on stock 4.10s and a dog of a 22RE... :)
With 4.56s, you get a 177.07 low....
Not bad for the price of one or two used, stock trannies, the dual tranny adapter (under $300 hopefully), cut d-shafts, and a bit of sheetmetal trimming... :)
One issue for Taco owners though, is it looks like you wont be able to run the R-series tranny in the front.....
Hmmm....I just realised this could be an issue for you guys running the 5VZ... :(
I dont think there's a bell to mate a 5VZ to a W, G, or L series trans... :P
Those with a 3RZ should be able to at least run a W series at the front....

Bud builds very nice things. I know him personally, through other fellow wheelers and from GSMTR this year. His flatbelly/t-case clocking is the shiznit, do not be fooled. You gain almost 6 inches of clearance, making your taco COMPLETELY flat across the bottom of the framerails. Check his site for updates soon.

so when is this stuff going to be available?
Cracker
12-15-2004, 06:21 AM
If I know Bud....Soon!
Only thing is, Bud likes to make sure something he designs will work and be issue-free before he starts selling the stuff in quantity.
He usually finds guinea pigs to run his proto-types hard-core before he goes into full production with them.
If any of you compete in any sanctioned off-road events regularly, running a Tacoma, give him a call....I dont want to put words in Bud's mouth, but maybe you can work something with him to be a guinea pig...(DONT call if youre running a DD, or mall-cruiser, or still running bunny trails...I'm sure he only wants to hear from heavy-hitters for product testing)...He already sponsored(s) two comp rigs...
Dont call to ask about getting any freebies of his generic products either...
Most of his stuff is generic enough it will work on Tacos, too, or I'm sure he can easily modify most of his current stuff for Taco use.
Again, I dont want to put words in his mouth, but about the only two major things I can think of that he might be working on right now for Tacos is crossmembers and the tcase adapter...Maybe the dual tranny adapter, too, but best bet would be to call him or email him directly.
I'm sure he has or will be cooking up more products in the future tho.

def. run the budbuilt trac bar. lots of thought and TONS of work go into each piece he makes. He also will not sell anything until hes absolutely sure it will WORK BETTER than he says it does.
The belly pan covers the entire under side of the truck, from the ps rack to the gas tank. Very nice piece.

Hi guys, thanks for the interest and nice comments. :)
Cracker didn't mention that he smashed his Taco 2 times while helping me pack up the shop to move now did he... Great guy. :)
OK Here's what's going on here.
We are resurrecting a taco that was burried in mud, so all kinds of stuff is broken and every exposed bearing, belt, and seal is shot. Got new timing belt in, idlers, and clutch is going in tomorrow. Will be clocking the tcase as in the pictures with no body lift. Will be finalizing the front skidplate, and the long belly skid, for those without a flat belly. Then will be removing it all and installing a new crossmember and totally flat bellypan. Will be 2 piece for the xtracab truck tho.
Got sketches done for the gas tank skid that will be stand alone.
Front winch mount for under the tupperware and then a full tube winch mount bumper. Rear bumper is drawn, and needs a clear day to build...
As for plans for the truck, will get Chevy springs in the rear with our kit, and probably HP44 ( or 60) and coils or coilovers. Jeff Egan's truck makes me Drool, so may get there someday sooner, rather than later. Got a set of 39" Pit Bull tires to test out with the 37" MTRs for daily driving chores.
NOT saying anything on the dual trannies yet. Doing some testing in an older truck for now, and may get one in the taco someday... Untill I know it is right, don't hold your breath.
As far as when: Traction bars are shipping now, but most of this stuff needs to get installed on my truck and I want to prove the fit and design so gimme a few more weeks.
Will ship traction bars for FREE (continental US only) if order is placed before the end of Dec...
I'll try to get more pics on the site soon, but the truck is #1 priority. If I had cool stuff on the site and couldn't sell it to you, that wouldn't be any fun, now would it... I have teased y'all enough. :)
Thanks again!

on the traction bar. the mount on the axle is welded on right next to the 3rd member (on the flat portion of the axle assembly. He said, on the excabs, we do need the aux crossmember to tie into. Reg cabs just use the oe crossmember. I don't know how Dick has his mounted though so will ask. I will have to modify my rear skid to make this thing work but it will be tons easier to adapt than would the new budbuilt bar.
