My friend just bought a '94 4Runner on eBay. We're going out to Long Island, NY to pick it up in a week or so. He's getting the run around with the DMV about registering the vehicle. He has the title in hand. AZ DMV tells him he has to get a temp tag from NY. The guy he bought the 4Runner from makes it sound like he's keeping the license plate and my friend needs to get temp tags, like what you get from a dealer. I know a few people heere have bought vehicles from out of state. What did you do?

Thanks

options are: drive back on NY plates and mail back, if the previous owner will allow it.
go to NY motor vechiles and get temp tag t odrive back to Az. shouldn't be much.

once in Az get emmissions and go register.

X2... We got temp FL plates when we bought our Lexus in FL, and they were good for only 7 days. I would suggest calling their DMV in NY.

You could also call a trucking company and pay 500 to have it shipped, no time off/wages lost, may equal out or even save you money with temp tags and gas there and back/plane tickets or whatever.

I agree, its waaaay cheaper to have a rig shipped than to fly out and drive back.

No time off? Why wouldn't I want that? :D The first class plane tickets are nearly free. He did call a few places but it wasn't $500. $1300 door-to-door average. $1000 dock-to-dock. We're adding a little time in NY (neither of us have been there) and visiting our families on the way back. Thanks.

I don't know NY's rules, but when I bought my truck in Massachusetts, they didn't have such a thing as temp tags or transit tags. I got my permanent AZ registration while in MA.(huge pain). Basically I got the whole shmear of papers from the AZ DMV, had to get an emissions test in MA, get a VIN inspection from a cop there (he was a friend so that helped) then sent all the paperwork back to AZ where my roommate went down to the DMV with a power of attorney I also sent him. He picked up my plate, fedexed it back to me, and i drove it back here. Long freaking drive, but I was back there anyways visiting family, so it wasn't like I made a special trip. I got such an amazing deal on the truck though it was worth the time/gas/food/hotels. It helps to talk to the right person at the DMV too, I got the runaround for awhile until I found someone who actually knew something.

Check out www.servicearizona.com for a 30 day permit. When the MVD screwed up a title transfer for me last year they issued one of these so I could drive the truck I bought.

I am not 100% sure that it will allow you to do an out of state vehicle, but the website doesn't argue with you :D

I do know that the 3day restricted permit is available to anyone from anywhere. If you get it on a Friday, it will be good to the following Wednesday. That should give you some time to get it back.

Good luck, and let us know for sure what works!
