we are headed to the mountains this year, not south of ensenada, so sorry. the race wont be coming by the beach until late afternoon.

I can live with out seeing the start. I will probably head out around 8 or 9 am and take my time getting to El rayo and get a good spot. then after the 12's pass it's over to Tres Hermanos. I'm trying to find a Baja Almanac to see if there are any access roads from where you come out from el rayo on highway 3 to tres hermanos that are easy on stock trucks.

Man I guess I should have been checking this thread... I'm leaving for the race early tomorrow morning, so I probably won't see any replies, but here's some spectating recommendations I posted up on Dezertflatbillers...er... Dezertrangers:

Yah last year was counterclockwise and went up Simpsons - bad idea. Uuuummm as far as spectating goes, you could go check out the famous rock whoops at Erindira. It's pretty easy to get to, and you could hop back and forth between the nasty whooped out sand wash before town with the GIGANTIC hole/wash out and the rock whoops just southwest of town. The only thing is there's gonna be a gazillion Mexicans around there, but might be worth it. This hole in the middle of the wash is ridiculous, its probably ten feet deep and 20 feet across with vertical walls, and you have to go right through the middle of it. When we preran a full-on trophy truck prerunner was stuck on the far wall pointing straight up and the front clip wasn't even above the lip. And it's REALLY soft sand. Another spot is when the race comes back through Ojos, crosses the highway, bears northwest toward the hills, and goes through a gate, theres a nasty silt bed that's pretty whooped out by the end of the race. It's wide so you can go on the course just keep an eye out. You could go watch the cars come down the goat trail right before Valle T. It drops the cars right onto the highway and someone usually gets going too fast and falls off the little dropoff. Right when the course gets off the highway at San Vicente there's a steep silty hill about a quarter mile from the highway down a wide graded road, if you go around to the left following the graded road you'll go around the hill and see the cars come back down and through some red farming land that's got some BAD washouts. Other spots that are pretty accesible are the access road from Independencia (fast, smooth single track through the bushes), and the road from Valle T to where the course comes back down from Mike's/Simpsons (fast graded road to hard left down and through some small rough stuff). Hope that helps.

One reservation about spectating at El Rayo is that there is a BFG Pit there and it's one of the only good access roads in the area, so it will probably be PACKED with pit crews. Down near Santa Catarina and Independencia are pretty good spectating spots and should have a alittle less traffic. I'm sure you guys know this but just make sure you don't backtrack down the course during the race, unless there is PLENTY of room to pull off, and make sure you pull off quick. And if you go on the course for any reason (please don't but I understand sometimes it necessitates) have your eyes peeled behind you for dust and listen for motors. I'm too tired to write a new post so here's what I posted on Dezertdudebros:

"I'm gonna call this the Murphy's Law weekend. I rarely compain about a trip to Mexico no matter what goes wrong, but this one was unbelievable. Full race report later, with a (long) pictoral essay on what all went wrong. Short race recap - running strong, 1st place in Score Lites through RM 100ish; flat tire, long change, lost 4 or 5 spots, gained 2 back, caught up to the next one, in the dust on long fast straight, couldn't see more than 5 feet in front of the car, co-dawg misses a little zig-zag on the GPS, dust clears and I'm off the road straight into a 6 ft deep, vertical walled ditch at about 60 mph, crash hard but didn't flip, try to drive out, get high-centered, car's pointing straight up, no radio, no signal on sat phone, I write a note on a dollar bill and hand it off to Dave Bonner driving my dad's 5 car, chase crew gets there 5 hours later, get going again, and from there on out only pics can describe what happened.... (major WTF). And that's only what went down while racing....man I'm glad to be home... "

It was all right. It got a little dusty but the wind blew it away pretty quick. The worst part was the 1000 people trying to get in and out of El Rayo. I finally got close enough and had some room in the bushes to park in and walked to the course and watched. the worst part was I was a little hung over from Papa's and Beer! damn that place but I had sooo much fun. I remember most of the night so good times right?!

I saw some local and a chase crew go at it over a parking spot, pretty funny.

Pop's month-old truck spits a rear wheel on the outside of a steep turn. (hey Tweeter I think we should start calling ourselves team Loose-Lugs) Rips off 5 studs, we retrieve the wheel from the ravine (that was fun), limp into town on 3 studs. Ended up getting in a little prerunning at the start in the 4 seater, have to stop 6 times to let a passenger out to spew his tacos al pastor.

Thursday:

Prerunning in the Tundra, at RM 2 I turn wide left for a hard right-hander, make the right turn and a bike hits me sending the rider flipping over the hood. The guy was flying down the hill and thought I stopped to let him by. I'm freaking out, thinking I've killed the guy, he's fine, a little hot, but slowly realizes he effed up, no one's at fault.

We get him all fixed up, let them go, end up having overheating, air filter, and brake issues all day, only get one lap of prerunning in.

Friday:

Tech/Contingency. More prerunning in 4 seater with Dave Bonner and my co-rider who got in the night before. Get a good line laid out in the wash.

Saturday - Race Day:

Watch the trucks start (and consequently the near-deaths of 15 Mexicans). Start the race, running good, make it past the lake at Ojos and a couple nasty hills, I'm in the dust and brake lights of 1201 for 50 miles, pass him stopped in a meadow. 1st place, running strong past RM 100. Turns out I had the second fastest time to RM 99 in our class by .10 seconds. Sweet, some consolation. Flat tire, (blah blah blah you've heard this part already), puts me back in the dust, then this appears out of nowhere:

Radio's not transmitting, no signal on Sat phone. Awesome. Hand off the dollar bill "help" note to our other car, wait for five hours. In the meantime our chase/prerun Tundra gets t-boned by a Mexican farmer tearing up the right doors and bedsides. We get going again, running strong, passing 11's and 9's and crap. That's frustrating, can't nerf em cuz they're probably winning their class and we're like dead last. Only had to bump one and it might as well have been a kiss. Anyway, we're within 2 miles of the goat trail aaaaaaaaaaaaaanndd:

Yah. Um ok. WTF????? Hit a normally insignificant bump and somehow (we're all still scratching our heads) the top of the spindle spun around backwards to where the arms are crisscrossed. Yet nothing's bent or broken. Um wow. I think when we hit the ditch (hard) we tweaked the arms just enough to cause this.

So I get a ride to the highway, get our chase crew, get the shocks off, pry the arms back to normal, 2 hours later and we're on the road again. Now we're passing rhino's and crap. Hit a couple water crossings at Mike's. COLD water. Get to our driver change at El Coyote freazing cold and soaking wet, and I think my nightmare's over.

Ha.

Turns out my two buddies took off to chase my dad with my and my co-driver's spare clothes in their truck. So now I'm running around in my boxer's trying to clean up the pit which was one huge mess. The chase crew's got mixed up and I'm left with my other driver's 2 buddies whom I didn't even know and I'm not kidding were the 2 dumbest middle-aged men I'd ever met in my life. So now I'm babysitting 2 grown men (in my boxers and race boots), explaining how to dump gas in the car. Now I have to pull the 4-seater on a trailer down a windy narrow road, so much silt in my eyes I can't see. My friend who commandeered my dry clothes also drank my Monsters I had set aside, so now I'm falling asleep.

Sunday morning (early):

Get a radio call (hey they do work!) - front arms tweaked out again, done for the day, car's heading back to highway at Valle T. Ok, that sucks, oh well, all I have to do is get back to Ensenada with Tweedle-dee and Tweedle-dum. Oh wait, Tweedle-dee is now pulling the trailor so I can get some sleep in Tweedle-dum's truck, and the trailor brake's lock up cuz someone wrapped the cable around the chain. He can't figure it out, I fix it. In my boxers. Then I teach him how to drive with a trailor. Tweedle-dum gets lost in downtown Ensenada. On the main strip. In front of our hotel. Tweedle-dee can't back the trailor into the parking lot, my co-dawg does it on first try half-asleep.

Bed. 4 AM.

Sunday (later):

Wake up at 10 AM:

Half my team's gone home, I have to take care of a mess of vehicles in the parking lot. Mexican parked in front of race car, I ask him kindly to move it, he looks at me, goes back to get the keys maybe? No, he doesn't come back. We push the car (200 point turn) while drinking afore-mentioned Mexican's soda from his ice chest in the back of his truck.

2:30 ish, we leave. Have fun on the radio's coming back (say, Kareoke?). Hour and half at border, unload at shop, eat at In-N-Out, home at 10 ish. Pass out.

preferably someone with lots of $$$, that iss what it takes most of, that and time to preruna nd really get to know the course...plus you need people who really know Baja so they can get out to the pits and find them and then chase you down if you break and you gotta make hotel reservations now for next year, and comletely go through the bike even if it is brand new, and search out sponserships, and get really familiar with baja terrain...
have you done anyhting of these things? have you ridden baja? ever? have you really thought about what goes into racing this long of a race here in the USA? multiply that time 100,000 and you have the level of difficulty and preparedness of doing it south of the border...
i never said i wouldnt race it because i'm positive that i will some day, however it will take alot more than YOU realize thats all i'm saying.

I'll fill in everyone in an effort to expose 1nudie's bizarre behavior. he has a dvd player in his truck, he takes porno with him everywhere, when he overheats on the side of the trail he watches porn, when he is driving he listens to jus tthe music so as not to be distacted by actual titty liicking, he just hears it, then he gets in border traffic where those around him are stuck around him and blasts the sound from said porno. so while blasting porno we play bumper tag in Tecate, god what a great time. i was laughing my ass off!
