I dont agree... especially if he has a 5spd. I think the crawler enables you to be much much much easier on the vehicle. You dont have to rev up the rpms and pop the clutch to get over shit. It enables the driver to slowly choose the correct line and take it easy on the truck. Yes... if the driver has no clue how to wheel...he could get the CV's in trouble real quick. But I think in Bob's case it will work out better than before.

Thats why I went back to BFG's. I have always had trouble with MTR's for the 3 or 4 years that I owned them. When I went back to BFG's my street ride improved signifigantly. I know they are not as good for sidewall puncture as the MTR's. But I have the no questions asked road hazzards. So I dont really care! LOL My truck is my daily driver and I personally choose to have a tire that is going to perform well on road.

I'll have to take a pick of my bumper when I get it mounted this weekend. Its a copy of yours. I sent Demello pics of it and had him build me one. I was too lazy to do it myself this time around. lol So thanks!

They had no problems with mine with the pellets in them.........got them all within spec even with bent rims!!!

My biggest problem was the fact that the first Discount that did the road force on them, the idiot running the machine rotated them 180° of where they should have been.........thus making them ride like a dribbling basketball filled with concrete!!!

I have 4.88s, It does ok, but at 75 I have the bouncy tires, full throttle to do that and some kind of driveshaft vibration- I'm running a one piece driveshaft. The damn thing weighs 5200 lbs which can't help anything.

I think I'll just add a bunch of airsoft pellets to the equal I have now and see if it fixes it. I peeled off all the weights which may not have been a good idea after adding the equal- I checked the rims they are very true- 20 thousands runout...

yogiaz
06-06-2006, 02:32 PM
I feel for you... sounds like you are having the exact same problem that I was. I even bought new rims at one point becasue I did not want to believe it was the tires.

As for driveshaft... Im thinking this time around Im gonna stick with the 2 piece drive shaft. I seemed to have better luck with it that way. The one piece was long and kinda hard to keep balanced. The slightest little tap with give me some good vibes.

With my 5spd and 4.88's I could easly do 85 or 90mph but my tire balancing was always the x factor that made me keep my speed down. Anway... I found that 65-70 gave me the best gas mileage. I'll probably do 70mph all the way to the con.

Yogi

With 5.29's, I'm running 2,200-2,300 rpms at what my speedo reads as 60mph, but the fastest I've had the balls to push it so far has been 75ish mph with it floored. I'll be stepping up to 5.43's in the new rear I'm having built, I figure that will do the trick for me. I'm just hoping I can make this (my third) Toy rear last until I can fund the new 9" rear. The pellets, equal or anything else will only work properly up to about 65mph for most applications.......wheel weights and equal/pellets or the combo of the three is a bad idea also (I'm sure you already know)

I would try 10 oz's of pellets or add pelets to what your equal to get 10 oz's (based on the chart for you tire size here...http://www.innovativebalancing.com/BigTirechart.htm) and have them road force balanced again.

I'm running a combo of the innovative beads (6 oz's) and airsoft pellets to get 14 oz's in mine and the front does pretty good until I hit 70 mph or so. I won't know how the rear handles until I get the unbent housing under the truck. The beads/pellets/equal will take some getting used to as they use rotational mass to balance the tire.......sometimes it takes a few seconds for them to settle down and do thier thing. Mine are touchy because of the crown of the tire being so extreme so I have to run them at 35psi to keep the stuff "flowing" properly.

Tacominator
06-06-2006, 03:06 PM

They need whatever you're going to use to balance the tire in there before a road force balance.....and don't let them tell you any different......and yes your 37's will fit in the machine! :)

If you have trouble, you can always make a trip up here and go to my guy.....I know it's a "little" out of the way, but he deals with this issue often ( he runs 40" MTR's on his Blazer with only air soft pellets and they are smooth as silk)

I'll just go to discount and raise a hellstorm till they get me some fresh ones and I'll try again- it was weird the ones I have were shaved from the factory probably in an attempt to make them round. I'm running equal in the tires, $70 worth, I doubt the discount tards are gonna like that...
I have some 17 in wheels I'm gonna sell, they are almost brand new, been on for 3300 miles, have only a TINY bit of rock rash and are in need of uglification. New they are 125 each. I've got 5 for 95.00 each. LMK

I'm reading the faq on innovative balancing, they say that I might just have tires that are out of round. I guess I should force balance them and try it. I may run up there to your guy if you're willing to hold my hand :o

If the tires are out of round, Discount should warranty them for you no problem, but most stores won't do that without trying the proper tecniques first......some will just tell you to "go pound sand becuase they can't balance a tire that big".......that's not the case.....it just takes someone that knows what they are doing!

If your serious, I'd be more than happy to hook you up with Matt.....just let me know when and I'll set it up for you. ( that sounds so :supergay: ) LOL

"go pound sand becuase they can't balance a tire that big"

They're telling me that "MTR's always have problems due to the extremely aggressive tread and oversize of the tire" I told the guy that was why I went with the MTR's and not superswampers or the such. He then said that forcebalancing them would not work... I hate this crap, what a pain!!

Kirk, I just got these tires and anything I do will have to be warranty etc since I need to save my $$ for the con. Last year I screwed up and couldn't afford to go...

Unfortunately, that's the BS most of us have to deal with.....when in fact it is just becuase Discount deals with an insane amount of whiners that complain about there 52" interco ground hawgs not balancing well enough on their super duty's......Most Discounts (ufortunately for us) just won't warranty as easily anymore. You either have to find a Discount that has reliable help or deal with the manufacturer first.

What ended up happening was I drove with them that way for months.... If I kept it about 65 it was almost barable. Anything faster than that was horrible. Finally I said fuck it and bought the BFG's. I have not regretted it a bit. MTR's are great onroad.. but way to heavy for daily driver tires in my opinion. I think with the reduced weight of going with Au rims this time around and back to BFG's... I will have a much better and enjoyable on road ride.

Yeah... once in a while you can find a person who actually gives a shit. The unfortunate thing is that those types of people dont stick around long and move on to something bitter and better. All I can say good about discount is they usually have the best price without shopping around, and one of their stores is always going to have my tire in stock. OH yea.. and they have never givin me any shit about damage done to my tire. Even when I have taken 3 tires in for repair. LOL

They are full of S#!T then............MTR's are one of the easiest "oversize" tires to balance out there!

Except for wear issues due to my crippled IFS I never had problems with my MTR's....they alway's ballanced well......hell that's why I have 33" MTR's ony daily driver now.....they wear well and balance well.

It has been my experince now with these Maxxis that it just takes a slight bit of improper balance on the rim and they will bouce all over the place......you just have to find the sweet spot......most places don't want to go through the hassle.

And a few pics of the new TTORA member wheeling it in NorCal. He is going to be on the con with us too.

The truck was not totaled... I cashed out with an $8k check. Costed about $1700 to fix the truck, build a new axle for it, and have a new front driveshaft made. The truck looked great.... as you can see from the pic it was completely fixed with new parts and painted, and still wheels and drives great.
