I think this needs to be posted on the National board as well. I am willing to bet there is AZ people that don't visit this chapter board too often. Just a suggestion.

I think the goal here is to maintain the open roads & trails that we have in AZ, while preserving the existing roadless areas at the same time.
Here (http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/opinions/articles/0710hanson-roads.html) is an opinion-piece by Jonathan Hanson in the AZ Republic that is worth reading.
Arizona is 73 million acres. There are only 1.2 million acres of inventoried roadless areas.

update:
Attended the local meeting - it was a huge waste of time regarding the IRA rule. We've been under the 2001 rule for 5 years- I've not noticed any ill effects, so my written comments will reflect that.
One VERY disturbing piece of information did come out of the meeting, even though it is not connected to the IRA's. All National Forests are in the process of rewritting the long term planning for each NF. The maps provided us with an opportunity to see what roads are slated for closure - and it's hugely depressing to see all the red lined roads. Check out this map of the Prescott and Tonto and Coconino National Forest - zoom in to 400% to see the road #'s.
