Doesn't the extra weight of the tranfer case make a 4x4 noise dive when you jump it, or do you just stay on it a little longer at the lip.

i never noticed it nose diving any more so than it did before

the front diff is only like 150 lbs or so, its not gonna make much of a difference imo

the difference in control i have over the truck is amazing though

i was in 2wd when this happened, if i would have been in 4wd i wouldnt have gone into the ditch

It's not like the diff weighs a ton...only about 50# or so I'm guessing. The only times I've had my truck nose dive is off steep lips that kicked the back end up.

Upon further review, yes the first truck is a tacoma, but I was referring to the only pictures on this thread that have DMZ in the corner of each pic which is of a Nissan Titan. I hope you can see the confusion.
Example:
This one says DMZ in the photo
http://www.dmzfab.com/images/petefrontsm.jpg

This one does not. It does, however, say DMZ Fabrication in average size type font at the bottom of the poster's signature.
http://www.dmzfab.com/dr/chaosa.jpg
And it is hard to see the DMZ on the skid plate on my 17" monitor.

Sorry for the confusion on my part

Are you kidding me? That is Bob Shepard's PRERUNNER. Prerunner as in prerunning race courses with before the race. Bob Shepard won the Baja 1000 last year in Trophy Truck as well as the Trophy Truck points championships. That truck is a $300,000+ Geiser-built prerunner, basically a Trophy Truck with a cab and AC. There was a request for prerunner pics, I answered. And Shepard's truck is a FAR cry from the Disco trucks I see everyday where you live, particularly the ones in front of Custom Motorsports.

Yah it's custom, done by Troy Johnson of the Fab School.

I motion for the Prerunner folder to be changed to the "Desert" Folder. What tech questions could someone have about their 2WD Prerunner (the Toyota-deemed prerunner) that wouldn't apply in the 4x4 thread? Think about it.

Yeah that bumper is definately sick...and you're completely right about the prerunner folder, I made that suggestion a while ago and nothing ever came of it. 4x4 = PreRunner + front diff, cv's, etc...so i don't see why there are different folders either. With the growing population of LT guys on here, we definately need a LT folder. Hell the SAS guys get their own folder(s)...they've got 3 and we'd only need one...

I definitely realize that, but it doesn't make sense really to have a "Prerunner" folder, since there's nothing that Prerunners have that 4x4s don't, merely vice versa. So why not make it a "Desert", or "Long-travel", or "High-speed" folder, heck I don't care. It's obvious that there's quite a few desert guys and growing, so why not turn a wasted folder into something useful, since we all post in it anyway, even a few of us 4WD LT guys, and that way we wouldn't have to deal with tech questions that could be better answered in 4x4 tech (which gets more views anyway). I dunno, probabaly a lost cause. Maybe if we just flame the hell out of anyone who posts an innocent 2wd tech question, eventually we'll have the folder all to ourselves. :xdevil:

Is that the same Tundra I saw that lost the wheel when the lugnuts came off?

Yes...

That depends if Mike would rather me lie or be honest...

....and, to redeem myself, upon further teardown of the Tundra, it turns out that the fabricator/assembler of the rearend did not correctly machine the hubs, and the studs are all a hair misaligned (don't remember the exact #, but it's rather significant) in different directions, therefore the lugs do not seat correctly, leading to premature loosening.

In other words: Not entirely my fault (still probably should have checked the lugs when I was scoping out the "noise"), and would have happened again soon, but we're fixing it.

are you not able to run 35's because of the offset of the stock wheels would cause rubbing on the shock, if you ran different offset on some 16x8 wheels, say 4" do you think it would clear?

Like he said, he can't run 35's because he's running shocks outside the frame rails

but my question is it because of the offset of stock wheels is to close in, if he had 16x8 with say 4" backspacing or 3 5/8 i'm wondering if it would clear, with wider fenders too

i want to build my truck with the shocks outside of the frame with a tundra axle and 35's, 6" rear fenders, would have to have them custom molded though because there designed for the ex cab

I'm pretty sure glassworks has fenders for double cabs too. With the extra width of a tundra axle you might be able to fit everything with the shocks on the outside of the frame...I dont remember if he's running a tundra axle or not.

glassworks only offers a 4" flare for double cabs, that won't fit a tundra axle width, yeah bajarnr12 has a tundra axle

Hmm...I responded to this earlier, I guess I didn't hit the button or something...

Yeah I've got a Tundra axle, and if I ran rims with shallower backspacing, I could probably clear the shocks with 35s, but then they wouldn't clear the fenders, as it is already a tight fit with the wider axle (the rear of the fenders are flared out a bit in the back to make it fit). So I figure I COULD make it work with wider fenders and different rims, but right now it's not really worth it.

the only reason i got the 35's was because it was cheap. i have a hookup on those terra grapplers and my regear labor cost was free. $135/tire and $150 for the gears was all it took so i said why not? if i had to pay retail, i would've just stuck with my 33's which were great too. you are right though, i will probably end up breaking more stuff.

those photos were taken at outlet center. from that little jump you can almost see kfc off in the distance. i'm running nitto terra grapplers because they were cheap for me. also, camburg seems to like them so i wanted to try them first hand.

Hi Juicy Jaos,

I'm curious, how fast are they going when doing jumps like that?
He looks like he's moving..

Thanks for the pics, they're too cool!

thanks for the compliment on the photo :)

my friend was pushing 45mph tops right there. just before that little jump, there is a sizable whoop section that prevents the truck from picking up any more speed. The fastest I could get the truck up to was about 40-45mph.

we should all go out there sometime for photos. that jump has four lanes and all of you can jump it at the same time! that would be a fat photo. i guess i'll find out when my buddies at solo motorsports will head out there to test the race truck and we can set up a meet or something.

Alright I'm usually free on weekends but like I said give me some notice and and I can take off a day of work my boss is pretty cool about it as long as he knows. Damn, 4 TC trucks jumping all at once will look pretty bad-ass though if you ask me...we just need a photographer cause I'm not letting anyone else jump my truck without me in it...

Dates I'm not free:

Big, like too big? I thought it looked best with the 33x10.5's too, but I needed more ground clearance. These 35's on bead-locked 17's are freakin' HEAVY though. I've got another set of BFG's 255/85/16 MT's mounted on Alcoas that I'll probably end up running most of the time because they're almost as tall as the 35's, but they're a lot lighter.

Most of the work I've been doing lately isn't worth taking pictures of, putting the interior back together, running brake lines, hooking the wiring harness back up, etc. There are some more pictures of the fab work HERE (http://www.trailslesstraveled.com/news.php?id=60) though. Cool. Not TOO BIG just maybe the rear bedside needs a little more flare? it LOOKS like it's going to rip those fenders off but I'm sure that they won't just kind of looks that way. I think it looks sweet with the 35's though personally. Yea I'm going to use 33x10.5's on mine and hopefully mount them on some 15x8 beadlocks on my truck.

Oh yea and let me know how you like the Baja Bushings I'm interested in getting my hands on some when I put my 62's on...

JESSE_at_TLT
07-18-2006, 03:07 PM
Oh, the rear. I just installed a Tundra-width Diamond FF rear axle, so those 35's would definitely rip the besides apart. I could barely tuck 35's with the stock-width rear end. I'm going to clearance them for now (just cut them out higher), but I haven't decided whether to make new/wider bedsides or just run it naked. I don't mind the way the tubework looks and I hit those bedsides on every damn trail we run (notice the chunks missing).

whoever wants to organize this mini-meet should start a thread in the events forum. i suck at organizing things like this but i will definitely be there in the HEAT taking photos, hahah. time to buy a new speedo. my schedule is pretty flexible right now. once i start my new job next month then i will only be free on weekends and holidays.

i want to get roughly 50+ photos of each truck so you guys can end up with a handful of pristine photos. for instance, the most recent photo i posted of my truck jumping can be printed out full poster size (24"x36") and come out really clean.

And, lastly, um, I didn't realize you guys were so gung-ho to get out there and die in the heat. I was thinking more along the lines of Sept, Oct; partially for weather reasons, but mostly cuz I won't be able to make it before then. My motor won't be done till probably mid to end of August, and it'll take another week or two to put everything back together, plus I'm so swamped with a million other things this summer, all that I have to finish before August 3rd cuz I'm getting my tonsils out, then I'm apparently gonna be down for 2 weeks then I go to Vegas for a weekend then I'm back at school, and I'll be busy the first few weekends. I would stop on my way to Vegas but I HIGHLY doubt the truck's gonna be done by then. But that's just me, do whatever works best for the majority of the guys.

Also, I haven't checked yet, but in my opinion I'd advise against throwing this in the events folder. It seems like everyone who would belong/be wanted out there is reading this thread anyway, and if you open the invite to everyone you might get some guys out there thinking it's a "TTORA RUN" who want to crawl around and stop every 30 seconds to take a picture of their body-lifted truck on a rock or want Juicy shooting them getting an inch of air, etc, etc. Also, you don't really want 50 trucks out there, especially for Juicy if he's taking pics of everyone. No time for him to drive around in the dirt. I dunno, not to sound discriminating or anything, but I think it would be more fun with not more than a dozen or so desert trucks. And I'm not saying "long travel only", I know some guys here wheel their "mid-travel" trucks harder than most LT guys (Mike, RJ, Paul (rojo) to name a few). Anyway, my 2 cents. (kinda long, sorry)

Well I met a friend of a friend last night...one of those guys that's good to know. He owns a sign business, and said to bring my truck in and he'd get all the fiberglass painted for no charge. But the best part, he said he can fab me up an in-cab cage for no charge, not even for the cost of tubing. True that. But mainly watch your own speed and keep an eye out, I was cruising a whoop section at about 50 for 1/4 mile then out of nowhere the last 2 were bigger and spaced further, if there had been a 3rd I would've been close to going end over end

i'd rather do 90 at the dunes at night than chase a built race truck in a cloud of dust at night doing 50 with quick tight turns and huge ruts.

I'd rather unexpectedly (is that a word?) hit some quick tight turns or huge ruts, than unexpectedly find a slipface at the dunes...

OOOO OOOO can I join in?!

I'd rather drive during the day cause I'm night blind while driving anywhere but Superstition Mt...

Hey, give me a call, I'll buy you dinner. Remeber I still owe you big for haulin' my bumper to Primm last year.

Well thanks but you don't have to; I got paid. Then again, we've supposedly got hookups for the hotel, clubs, and a UFC fight (if there is one), so maybe I'll snag a dinner and milk the freebies... ;)

Just finished installing my besides...I wanted to wait for help from someone who has done them before, but I'm not the most patient person. I figured I was jumping head first into a pile of shit, but they came out pretty damn good. The driver side is giving me some trouble around the tail light area, but I should be getting everything painted soon and I'll clean up everything when they come back off. I'll get some pics up this weekend.

I ended up going to Barstow to escape the HEAT. It was nice and cool out there and it rained just enough to make it Tacky and dustless. Couldn't ask for better conditions. I met up with STR8XEDGE.http://www.ttora.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=5008 His truck is SicK. He's runnin the same tires as Juicy. I like them. STR8XEDGE thanks for the highspeed run home. You kept me awake rollin over 100 all the way!
