I'm getting my glass bedsides and fenders this weekend (hopefully) and was wondering if there are any writeups anywhere? Seems like it will be pretty straight forward, but figured I should at least read up on it before I start cutting my shit up.
this is what I got:

You want some help broseph? I've done my fenders and know how to do the bedsides. I'd recommend getting some help for trimming/fitting and have 1-2 people do the bedsides simultaneously. Trimming/sanding eats up more time than you think.

Yeah man some help would be awesome. It all depends on what's going on these next few weeks and if I have to work weekends or not. I'll be getting the bedsides this weekend but i dont want to put them on before the fenders, and bajaconcepts doesnt have any in stock and says it will be probably 2 weeks before they get more. Hopefully i can find some other ones before then.

Oh ok I thought you meant this weekend. Well if you need some help or whatever let me know, if you haven't done it before it's nice to have someone there who has to get those "popular" trimming spots.

So Baja Concepts doesnt have any fenders in stock and wont have any for a couple weeks. Is there anywhere else down here in socal that carries glassworks stuff? Closest I've found is Kartek in Corona but that's a good hour+ drive at least. Is there any place down in the San Diego are that sells them?

Anyone have pics of Glassworks 6" fenders on their truck? The guy I'm getting the bedsides from has a set already painted so I'm going to pick those up too, just hoping it won't look too wide.
Edit: Nevermind...

It wouldn't look rediculous I don't think. I run 10.5" tires on stock rims and I run the 4.5" glass and they stick out about an inch...soooo if you running 12.5" tires...I'd run 6" no doubt!

Hmm..we'll see. I checked out the pics of the 6" on glassworks website and the shot from the front looked rediculousy wide. It's definately going to look like shit if I put them on before the LT with the stock width. Just got a call from progressive and the new check is in the mail...so hopefully it'll be here by the weekend so I can get the LT.

Yea that's true those were definitely way too wide. RJ runs 3.5" with stock width and it looks fine, he also has 12.5" tires though.

I'd run the 4.5" fenders. 3.5" is too narrow and the 6" fenders are unnecessary. By the way Tweeter, that desert kit looks HIDEOUS and the fit is TERRIBLE.

What trimming are all you guys talking about? With all the talk about long sleeves, gloves and respirators, I'm guessing fiberglass work. You shouldn't need to do any trimming to fit 33x10.5" tires.

Not to clear anything to get the fenders to fit sung on and make sure there's no gaps. My fenders needed major trimming on both sides to get the corner lenses to fit right.

Mine stuck out like 1/2 inch from the door to fender gap area and say 1/4 inch higher than the hood and the hood gap was huge and crooked...it was a damn mess lol. It was glassworks too not the cheap glass, I was a little disappointed, I think I just got unlucky, it's pretty much a shot in the dark whether you get a great fit or shitty one. So fitting the desert kit is terrible? How so?

I haven't installed a desert kit, just noticed that every one I've seen looks like shit. Kind of like the Glassworks bedsides. One of my wheelwells is almost 1.5" further forward than the other side and they're totally asymmetrical. Poor finish work. But my fender fit/look pretty good.

Interesting. Well if I can't get it to fit up right I'll probably get rid of it, I'm kind of anal about things lining up right. The truck it's coming off of it was lined up perfectly actually...weird.

No man, I think you've got the wrong idea about me. I'm working out of a small two car garage at my house, just like most of you guys. Trails Less Traveled is not a shop like you might be thinking, we just do some product development work, write a few tech articles, etc. I've started collecting some more specialized tools recently, but I still don't take in any paying projects or that sort of thing.
Anyway, have you ever worked with fiberglass? It really is VERY easy to work with. I got to see the guys at Denunzio Racing (www.dununzioracing.com) make molds for an entire Tacoma cab and there really wasn't that much to it.
If you're serious about making your own stuff, start with your stock fenders and bedsides. Cut them up to clear the tires when you cycle your suspension to full compression, figure out what the fiberglas needs to clear and how you want it to work, then start shaping with bondo or modeling clay. There are a lot of resources online and in print if you want to learn more about making molds, plugs, etc. There are even a couple of good threads on the Pirate forum where a lot of guys are making custom glass for their buggies.
I'm unhappy enough with what's on my truck that I'm going to make my own fenders and bedsides. I talked to Fiberwerx about it and they'll make the parts if I provide them with master plugs or molds. I just can't give you any realistic timeline (it's pretty low on my priority list).
I think the problem with the glass that's currently available is that they didn't spend too much time shaping the panels or making the good molds. The newer stuff from Glassworks looks and fits MUCH better than their older junk. The other problem is that the Glassworks fiberglas fenders and bedsides weren't made to fit any specific wheel/tire/suspension setup, so the fenders have more clearance than they need in some areas and not enough in others. The bedsides are a total disaster. I've only noticed some of these details over time and just haven't updated the original article with a long-term review yet.

I drilled the spot welds. They fit awesome except for the driver side taillight area, it's getting caught up on something so the taillight isn't flush. Other than that, it's perfect, and I plan on going over that area again when I pull them off for paint. I have some pics on my camera, but I wont have any way to get them off until tomorrow.

I actually just loosened the bolt that hold it and twisted it as close to the insode of the fender as I could get it...the pics of me flexing out on the rock were from me making sure it would clear, which it did. If you have 5 feet behind the bed, you have enough room. As you can see from the install pics, all I did was set the front of the bed on the rear bumper and set the back end on a trash can. You could just cut off the stock bedsides, but drilling out the spot welds and taking off the stock bedsides is a better way to do it.

I kind of used the TLT writeup as a guide but I could barely read what it said and couldnt see the pictures (messed up printer) so I just got a basic idea from that and winged it. The passenger side went on smooth as butter but the driver side is getting hung up in the tail light area...when I pull them off to get the professionally painted I'm going to try to clean it up a little more...I hacked a lot of shit out of the tail light area to get it to mount flush.

Thanks, i finally got them on. What are you going to do about the filler? I was suprised because mine came with a spot to mount the stock fuel door and filler.

08-02-2006, 12:19 PM
Hmmm, are you using Glassworks bedsides? When we installed ours, the only option they offered was a universal fuel filler door that could be cut into the bedside. I decided against that because I knew we'd be installing a fuel cell eventually. I just cut the filler neck shorter and reattached it to the gas tank with a short section of universal fuel filler hose from a local auto parts store.

I just loosened one of the bolts that holds the filler in place and twisted it as close to the inside of the fender as I could. I flexed out with the 32's and it cleared it fine, but I havent flexed it with the 33"s yet to see if it still clears.

Yeah, they're glassworks. I ordered them through camburg and they didn't really give me an option, but I'm stoked that I dont have to figure out what to do with the filler. Check it out:http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f330/gosurfn2000/100_2025.jpg

For the taillights, did you drill holes or did you fit the factory screw retainers? It seems like there must be some kind of screw retainer that is round, that'd be convenient?? Thanks

Yep they only had 34 and 36 at autozone but a 1-3/8" fit just about perfect. So how the hell do I get the steering rack off of the spindle? I took off the nut on top but I can't get that bolt that runs through out.

I believe you do have to take the rack off, do you have the upgrade bushings to put on your rack while you have it off. When you start putting every thing back together remember blue lock tight on all nuts and bolts.
YoTRacer158
09-03-2006, 04:00 PM
Yeah I pulled the rack off, I have a new rack on the way so I'll put the upgraded bushings on that one before I put it on. The front LCA bolt is being stubborn as hell...and that's the last thing that needs to come off before I can start putting everything on.

Yeah, I had to cut out a couple of the stock LCA bolts when we installed the long-travel kit on our Tacoma too. I've got a solution for you after you cut the stock ones off though. You can replace the stock metric hardware with 3/4 x 4.5" long grade 8 bolts and locknuts. Just pull the alignment cams off the stock bolts/spacers and tack-weld them onto the new 3/4" bolts so you can still adjust the alignment like it was stock. Hope that helps.

We had a 6ft breaker bar and snapped an impact socket. I finally got them off and everything is on. I had quite a few leftover bolts, so hopefully they werent important. I'll get some pics up as soon as I can. The driver side lower ball joint gave us a ton of trouble too but we finally got it. The alignment isn't great but it still tracks somewhat straight. I also didn't get the bump stops or limit straps on so I wont be able to rail it for a while until I get those on.

Ok so the kit finally got a thorough test out at Pismo yesterday, the results...
1. The fenders clear the 33x12.5's just fine. Myself and a few others were worried that the tires would contact the fenders on full compression, but there was only very minimal rubbing on the inner lip of the fenders on the rear edge of the flare...only enough to take a little paint off.
2. The antenna mount on the inside of the fender, however, did not like the 33x12.5's. Or should I say the tires didnt like the antenna? Either way, I found it dangling and dragging along the ground after a few minutes.
3. The tires made quite a bit of contact with the inner fenderwell (where it protrudes from the floorspace for the cab), so that will definately need some clearancing.
4. I need a cage. The crack in my cab spread about 4" farther.
5. I need some damn shocks so i can get my rear LT on...I was overdriving the hell out of my rear end and cant believe I didnt break anything.
6. Fat fucks on quads who dont know how to ride dont like it when you pass them on sand highway and will pull up next to you and cry when you stop, and dirtbikes get butthurt when you pass them too.
7. I need a skidplate...I burried the front end hard a few times (hauling ass through bowls with huge holes at the end) and cant believe I didnt bust my radiator (or anything else for that matter).
8. This kit fucking rocks...there were a couple times where my buddy and I thought "OH SHIT" because I went into a section a little hot...but every time it soaked everything up no problem. After going back and looking at some of the sections, we couldnt believe it handled them as well as it did.
Overall I couldnt be more happy with the kit...I just cant wait to get the rear LT on and a cage built so I can push it a little harder.

So how much is a 42x27" sheet of steel gonna run me for my skidplate?
A pretty penny! :D
Look for a steel yard that deals with drop/cut metal. I have a shop locally that sells their left overs from their commecial projects. you can usually find pretty good prices on steel that way. I spent $150 on my tubing for my roll cage that way. If I remember right that also included the square tubing for my sliders.

I figure I SHOULD use steel because I hit a lot of things...fire hydrants, cars, shit burried in the sand, etc...i'm guessing steel will take a little more abuse than aluminum, just a guess.

How thick, what grade steel??? At the more expensive of shops, like IMS, that in 1/8" will be around $25-35 for steel, 1018 cold-rolled. For 4130, a 24X48 will run about $90. Make it steel, and gusset it. A thin, strong steel sheet can be welded to its' gusset frame, making it much stronger than any piece of aluminum will ever be. And, the weight will be only a few pounds more in overall weight.

First off, you make yourself sound like an idiot; learn some grammar. And second off, wtf kind of races are you running? If you're simply racing against yourself I don't know why you need an "Organized Racing Team." It all sounds like bullshit to me.
When we raced the truck with the metal panels and practiced drifting, we would inevitably end up hitting trees, shrubbery, rocks, etc. Impacting at speeds as low as 10 mph up to "glancing blows" at 70-80mph would result in the fenders being dented resulting in the metal hitting the tires which led to severe damage or blowouts.
In my opinion this is just bad driving, and a little FYI, drifting is NOT the fastest way around a corner. My friends enjoy driving their trucks too, we call it "driving our trucks," not racing.
Your whole team sounds like a joke, and for your sake I hope it is.

Drifting through turns on asphalt course leads to lower times because you follow a longer line and lose traction.
Why do you think this is not true for offroad as well? There is a time and place for it, I agree; however, I believe it should be used more as a necessity than an intended technique. i.e. coming into a corner way too hot.
That being said, it seems you are basically racing rally courses in a truck if you are comparing your racing to CORR or WRC.
I don’t care what level you at, backyard racer or professional, YOU WILL HIT things. Driving on the edge especially off-road is a dynamic atmosphere and a dangerous place. Who’s your favorite pro racer? I guaranteed they hit obstacles at their level of competition. From off road legends like Robby Gordon to the amazing and now retired F-1 driver Michael Schumacher, they have all crashed. So what makes you think that in practicing and training race teams won't hit things?
You are an amateur team, therefore hitting shit while practicing how to drift is just dumb.
We are not claiming to be a professional team, rather a grassroots team. Sorry if we do not meet your specification for a race team but let it be known that everyone has to start somewhere. Your comments express views that you have knowledge of what a race team is and is not. What experiences do you have or are you a typical keyboard racer that spends more time on the computer than on the trails?
I thought race teams actually compete. You have given no indication of what sanctioning body you are racing with. If it isn't organized racing, then in my opinion, you are just driving around wrecking your truck.
I do have experience. For the past couple years I have been helping out Total Chaos/Locos Mocos at MDR and BITD races.
Furthermore the races we ran were at local tracks, the same place where the majority of racing is done. As cages are related to the class and et we ran, it was not necessary, it was an option. Once again we wanted to see the natural tendencies of the truck to establish the direction of fabrication at a later point.
Racing without a cage is just stupid.
Nonetheless, the race team you so claim to be pathetic, because you obviously run such a fine one yourself with the vast resources you harbor also has a Toyota Mr-2 that was once a daily driver at 532 RWH...and that was before we decided to abandon that engine combination and rebuild it and turn the car into a race car. Now we are focused on running in the NDRA.
If racing was all about speed then the only one having fun would be John Force. Try having an open mind and spending more time on the trails instead of on the computer.
I have no clue what you are trying to say here, but congratulations, you have a fast MR2.
The time we have taken to express our views was to help educate you that racing is far more than what you see on TV. You don’t need 17” of travel on the front, 20” of travel on the rear, riding on 35” tires with a 351 Windsor underneath the hood to race. (Although it would be nice!)
Realize that motorsports isn’t entirely defined by the professionals rather the people who aspire to be reach their level. It’s the grassroots racers that compose nearly the entire motorsports community, not the pro’s. It is the grassroots teams that sustain the high performance aftermarket community in sales not the pro’s. Try supporting grassroots teams not trying to hinder them.
You're preaching to the choir here buddy. WTF do you think MDR is?

In fact, at times it’s necessary to drift through the turn, for without the momentum you will slow down extensively or even get stuck especially in silt and mud.
You don't drift through silt. Don't make assumptions of terrain you've never seen.
If you take a look at your website you'll understand the criticism you're getting:
Race Series:
Currently on the Local Level
- No sanctioning body? No pictures? No credentials? You can't claim to race if you don't provide a legit venue.
"Hesitant over the ability of the stock setup, Bryan conceded to Patrick's request and quickly found the awesome capabilities of a Toyota truck and his second love of racing: Off-Road. Thereafter on a normal basis the truck was raced through the desert and mountains in extreme temperatures at times reaching speeds of 100 mph!"
- Either your lying (most likely) or your stupid. Exaggerration never begets respect.

- And finally, this is your idea of a race truck and you expect us to take you seriously???
C'mon dude, there's a BIG difference between a grassroots race team with an "in-progress" truck, and a bunch of buddies who think that getting stuck in big mud holes and having a website makes them a racing team. If you really are serious about racing, don't claim "race team" status until you actually have an idea of what you're doing or at the very least have some progress to show for it. Until then, prepare to get ripped on - and for good reason.

OK...we ended up mounting the shackle pivots 14.5" in from the back of the frame and went 52.5" in a direct line to the front hangers. It sits almost perfectly level with the bed and gas tank (no spares, no bumper and no shocks mounted.) After the tubing is on, everything is re-installed, and the springs settle it'll most likely be sitting a little lower in the rear. The shackles looked like they would hit the frame before the springs hit the bumps, bump with Paul and myself jumping on the back we couldnt quite get it to compress far enough to get either to hit. The springs seem extremely soft due to the angle of the shackles...so if it ends up being too soft and it sags too much once the springs settle we'll be moving the shackle pivots back a few inches. I'll be heading back up when I get off work so expect some more pictures by the end of the night.

They are already soft enough we don't need to bother.... Got some extra upper pivots and installed them. We had to change the angle, it was too soft in the first 3 inches of travel. We can check it tomorrow. I called a few guys who know this particular setup, and they confirmed my suspicions. Helton runs different springs, and this pack is NOT the same as his setup. It's going to work much better with a load in the back.

Quick update before I go to bed...last night we welded in some new inserts for the shackle mounts behind the orginal ones (3" behind the original ones) to get a little more rake out of the shackles to stiffen the springs up and get a little more height. If I were to re-do all of this, I would honestly weld in 3-4 inserts back to back to back for a lot of adjustabilty in height/stiffness depending on how much of a load was being carried.
Tonight we welded the crossmember behind the gas tank back in and strengthened the fuck out of it, and welded in some plate on top of the frame where the front of the shock hoops will be comming down. We also cleaned up the shock hoops a bit and got them ready to go in tomorrow. With no bed or gas tank it was measuring 12.5" from axle to bump...so with everything back on I should be sitting around 10" uptravel/8" downtravel or maybe even 9"/9" once the springs settle. We don't have a jack tall enough to check full droop so it's hard to say...with a light slant in the shocks I may be pulling 19-20" travel but we'll see. With the truck on the jacks we had 14.5" from axle to bump and the springs/shackles still had a LOT more downtravel left in them.
Tomorrow we're going to shoot for getting the bed cut and welding the shock hoops in at the least. We still have a couple pieces to make for the shock hoops but nothing major...just a few cuts and a few bends. I'm guessing everything will be done Thursday night...I just need to get the shocks welded and pick up some limit straps.
I'll try to get some more pics tomorrow...it's definately nice seeing it start to go back together.

Update: Shock mounts on the top are done. Look good, and clean. Got the bed cut, and put the gas tank back in. Amazingly, there is still a lot of room in the bed. Got the bed hoops in, welded about 60% of the way. Got the gas tank back in, we are getting close. Gonna have to modify the rear bumper, and some other tidbits like E-brake work, brake proportioning valve, etc. But it will be a driver tomorrow, which is what counts.

We could have, but the way TLT mounted their shocks to double as kickstands didn't sit too well with us. They are about 1" or so like Derek said above the bedline. 16" would have been no problem below the bed. But who the hell needs 16" when you've got 18!!!!
