Ocala National Forest
We're basically broke down into three groups, Northern, Central and Southern. We need to all pull together and make kick-ass trail riding weekend.

We have two key members that are expecting their first born in Sept., we need to give them at least a month to enjoy the new father hood. Then it's back to wheeling :D , If we start organizing now for a run in November, that should give ample time for everyone to make plans.

Your thoughts?

Need some feedback on this schedule.

I will be arriving early (noon) Friday and laying claim to our area setting up camp and trying to make an afternoon run (around 2:00 or so). For anyone who wants to go I'll be checking out Rodman Pit and a few other places and back to camp for dinner ~5:00 I'll do the meet and greet thing for the rest of the night. So night runs are an option.

Saturday:
Who will be showing up Saturday and when?

Morning Trail Ride options.
1. Railroad Grade- Trailriding and mud
2. Mondex- mud
3. Eureka Pit/ Rodman Pit
4. Boston

Depending on how many people show up we may need to split up into groups.
So anyone who knows the trails above are drafted to be the Trail leader.

Any cooks in the group need to make it back early to tend the food.
The evening is open because who knows what people will want to do.
Anyone drinking will not be allowed to drive during the night run if there is one.

I'm leaving Sunday open so people can do what they will.

Let me know what you think.

Middle of November.

For 2 days of wheeling the spots would be pretty far apart. There is the south end of the ONF which is pretty good. Then there is that one spot we've been hitting lately that is pretty far NW of there that I'm sure some of us would want to swing by. So a campground would need to be in a pretty central location.

While not centrally located Alexander Springs campground is in the heart of the South Ocala trails and has clean facilities. So long as we reserve sites ahead of time we should all be able to be together. A trip to Boston is a must.

Ryan, any reports on the other place?A

BTW the middle of November sounds good to me.

91toyota4x4
07-30-2006, 08:46 PM
What about the campground at Salt Springs? How does that one compare to Alexander? Salt Springs is a little more central to all of the spots.

Nick we did a campout last November at Ockalwaha in the ONF and it was cold. So I wouldn't worry about heat. The weather should be perfect.

We should post this in the GA and AL forums too once we get the dates figured out.

Alexander Springs campground was very nice....Clean...Very nice staff...We had one staff member come to r camp site and thank us for being great campers..We were not the normal rude 4x4 guys that they get...As for the dates id say 17-18 an 19th of November would be good (mid month) plenty of time to get ready...Close to lots of trails but not close to the tater wedges:(

I am totally down with this! Although I must ask...do we really have the capability to invite 2 or more other chapters? Having a good chunk of our chapter get together and make a run to boston would tuff enough? Dont get me wrong, I believe the more the merrier but having 30-40 rigs on an event we have never tried before has disaster spelled all over it! We would have to do some major splitting up. :2cents:

Good idea Chaz!

I'm in. I'll be moving to Melbourne Bch the week before labor day and I should be all settled and be able to get the time off of work. Any hotels in the near vicinity? I've spent too much time on the ground outside with the Army and now that I am out it will be a while before I want to camp again.

We will be rideing at these places.

Rodman and Eureka pits (http://s73.photobucket.com/albums/i240/bosco53/Eureka%20pit%20May%202006/)

And

Boston (http://s73.photobucket.com/albums/i240/bosco53/B-pit%20July%202006/)

We have had stock rigs make it through both but the more mods, the more stuff you will be able to do!

Hunting season opens the second weekend of November. Campground and camp sites may be hard to come by. Also there will be a few more rangers around so make sure you stay where is is OK.... Tickets suck!
Just my :2cents:

Any hotels in the near vicinity?

Not really. Alexander springs is king of in BFE. You can get a hotel on the east side of Ocala but that is gonna give you like a 30 minute drive to get where we are camping.

And I don't think many from the other chapters will come so I wouldn't expect a ton of rigs, but I think it would be good to at least invite them. I think a turnout of 15 trucks would be awesome but I wouldntn't expect much more. It would be nice to get some of the S Ga and S Alabama guys to come.

Plus, if there are alot of rigs we can always split up according to how built the rigs are. I don't know about you but I don't like being in groups of much more than 6 rigs. We all know that Boston can't handle much more than that, but Atlanta (ha) can.

Thank you bosco.

This is good :D I like the interest everyone is taking, I'm as gitty as a school girl on prom night ;)

Who is/would be the trail leader for the area? I'm willing to work with him/her to make this happen. We need to set a date as a group first! on this thread, then have an official post started by Neil. We need to see what our true options are for camping, hotel and see if we can lock it in (reservations) if we can. A head count would also be a good start, a list to see who's going, what you have and what are your plans. I think that we should have the four TL's manage and organize their region and pump this up. I'll spear head the South, I'm willing to drive up and meet with the TL's (or just that TL) to scout out what the projected plans will be (campsite, facilities, trails... what not).

If we can get this organized in a timely matter, I'm thinking (and it hurts) T-Shirts :) . Fortunately for us I do have a source, I believe I can get them done at the right price. I'll start a new thread for the layout (as soon as a date is set) that way we don't take up space on this thread for that.

For a large campout, I'd use Oklawaha RV Resort. Alexander Springs is very nice, but I think it would be hard to setup a large group since the campsites are seperated and they only allow two vehicles per site.

The problem w/ Oklawaha is the long drive to get to the southern trails. May be worth it though. Just my $.02

Again, Who is/would be the trail leader for the area?
It does fall under central, right? I thought "cancel" wanted the responsibility, I read that he can't start until September.
Cancel, any chance you want to step up to the plate now? help get this outing under way...

I agree with you Brian. Even though it is fsrther from the south end it is alot closer to Eureka pit and Boston.

Neil426
08-01-2006, 08:54 PM
I think that we will have to seperate ONF into North and South. ONF is where a lot of the States trails are. I hope to have two people step up and learn the "Forest" north and south.

As far as a trail leader for the Take over anybody who knows of a specific trail or area that they feel would be good pm me with a trail head location and I'll bounce it off of Jason at FL4WDA to see if the area is ok for us to be in. Next we will have to get ahold of the ttora waiver since it would be an organized run.
Then check with the Forest service to see if we have enough rigs to require a permit.
So we need to post up a roll call to figure out how many rigs we have.

Executive decsion - Oklawaha it is. Its a good camp site and has been the location of the annual FL4WDA meeting that I'm sure everyone has on their calenders. MLK Weekend is the usual date.

Post up your thoughts. I'll post the official roll call thread this Friday.

08-01-2006, 09:27 PM
Sounds good! I think it's a good place to base from because there are easy trails near by and Eureka pit for the stockers or near stock trucks. Then A/B aren't too far away either. Whoever wants to go to the south end can do that too. Plus it is like an hour closer to home for me :flipoff4: lol

08-04-2006, 08:46 AM
Not trying to start anything, or override any decisions, I am cool with the location and will try to make it. I have never used Oklawaha but I have been there. It is a seemingly a pretty nice setup and will work great for a big gathering like this. I have also used Alexander, Salt Spring, and Juniper Springs camp grounds, of the three Salt Springs is by far the nicest setup for a group camping outing. The sites are open, and they are much more laid back than either of the other two. The sites have electricity... The positives about this over Oklawaha, and what will help convince my wife to come, is the springs and activities that are available. She will want something to do while I go out wheeling. Anyway, this is just a thought.

Also, I know the south end of ONF very well and will be glad to go by and talk to the Rangers to find out what is legal to ride and what is not. I am not 100% sure I can make this so I won't volunteer just yet for leading a trail ride.

Go back and READ the WHOLE thread. It clearly STATES the DATES. Neil even posted the DATES again for Iggy who also didn't READ the WHOLE thread.

That was unnecessary Steven...we are not blatent jerks on this board like alot of people are on other boards. If someone has a question either answer it or leave it be. Adding a good natured sarcastic comment AFTER you answer the question is fine but dont be a blatent jerk. The dates should be posted on the opening post of this thread. Since they are not, it is hard for people who dont have time to get on the board very often let alone be able read a whole 3 page thread to find out what the dates are.

What is the nearest town to Oklwahah RV resort ?
Looking for an inexpensive hotel/motel close by.

I'm not a camper. Too old to lay on the ground. And no camping gear.

usmcracing
09-15-2006, 05:21 AM
Ocala would be the closest with a hotel and thats abouta 45min or more ride. For the money you're going to spend on the room/gas for the weekend you can buy a cheap tent, air matress, and sleeping bag. Hell I have a extra tent you use. What kind of man are you? I could understand if you had a wife/girlfriend going.

curiousgeorge
09-15-2006, 05:49 AM
Palatka is pretty close to, I don't know what kind of hotels the have there though.
You might also look into cabin rentals. THere migth be something available in the Salts Springs area. It is abuot 20 minutes from the place the group will be camping. You could also rent an RV or popup.

I actually dont have anything, I'm debating if I want to get a tent or just sleep in the bed of my truck on something, I'll probably take a trip over to walmart sometime soon to see what they have in the way of tents and sleeping bags. You know I'm easy on departure time, I work til about 5 so anytime after that on friday is good, or early saturday morning if need be, I'd rather be up there friday night though so we dont have to worry about wheeling on only a few hours sleep but either or is really fine with me.

Ok since we're on the subject of lockers and the takeover I need your opinions, I, with the help of chaz, am installing the TM lift on my truck before the takeover, for the rear end the kit comes with add a leafs and blocks, which obviously isnt the best set up. I originally planned on getting 5" rear springs and shackles with 5150 bistiens but now I'm thinking I might be better off just getting the shocks, shackles and a lockrite instead. The springs and lockrite are basically the same price and I can't afford both so I have to make the decision. Do you guys think I'd be better off with the more articulation I will get from the leaf springs and shackles or with a locked rear end?

The rear locker is going to get you more places then flexy springs. You could always go with some chevy springs ($50 to $100) with some cheap shocks.

I am going to try my luck and request the hole weekend off so keep your fingers crossed. Otherwise, I should be at camp no later than 2pm-ish which is probably when I should start thinking about cooking already...

So if the bad happens, Neil, maybe we can plan either a good night run (to boston) which may be tuff with all the good food and drink around, or go out sunday morning (to boston ;) ) so I can get my wheeling fix in as well. Man I fawkin hate my job sometimes!!!! :flamethro:

Hello to everyone, I plan to be at this event, my first ever TTORA meet and of course first time meeting you guys. I've been to Ocala a couple times and it was fairly disappointing. I'm really hoping you mud hounds can show me the good stuff. See you guys there!

Sounds good man, the more the merrier. What kind of rig you running? Any pics? Where you from?

Thanks for the welcome...I just want to experience something better than the sand trails that's all! I live in Broward County, been to Ocala twice, Georgia National Forest once with my current truck. It's an '83 pickup, 33" Buckshot Mudders, 3" Suspension lift. I will head over to the other thread and donate cash for the meal, it sounds delicious. My diffs are open, but I'll try whatever rocks I can. :)

will there be any places to buy it by the campsite? that would be easier for me, I'm not really sure where I could buy it around here

Also, did we figure out what we're doing for beer yet? Is it BYOB or we gettin a keg?

usmcracing

I'm sure there will some places near by to the camp ground for you get some wood. Looks like its going to be BYOB.

You can buy wood at some dude's house on 316, pay $3 per bundle I think on the honor system. We got some there last time, it's about half way between salt springs and the bridge. If you are comming from the south you will go right by it.

Iggy

Dry hardwoods are the best.

I can bring some big ass chunks on saturday night when I show up but someone is going to have to cut them up.

Well guys, I am out. I will not be able to make the campout.

Money is super duper tight and my plan was to work for my father in law to get some fundage together for next weekend... Had to take Gavin in to the ER yesterday morning for a fever and we were there all day and part of the night. I'm going to try to get something together this week, hopefully I can make a day trip or something.

$20 per site per night.

what does a site consist of?
cause that shit is expensive

$20 per site per night.

Thats cheaper then the last time I stayed there. The MLK campout I was charged $28 a night.

Iggy there is a large bathroom/showers, power/water hookups, you're really close to all the trails, and there is a swiming pool (I don't think it'll be used)

I think the $20 price up there but if you stayed with us at this little campgroud in South ONF for $5 a night you'd be glad to put out the extra $15.

Whats the best way to get there from the south, me and Chaz (2tense) were looking at the map the other day and couldnt really decide on which way seemed the best. We finally decided kind of on taking the turnpike to 95 to 40 then taking 19 the rest of the way, anybody know if theres a better way or if that seems like a good idea? Is there a good way to get there from 75? That was another way we saw.

coryc85

I called this number from the opening post in this thread. She said the site is right off of 316.

Where:
Oklwahah RV Resort
24350 N.E. 160th Avenue Rd.
Fort Mc Coy, FL 32134,
(352)546-5500

And I'm coming from S FL too, I think I'll take Turnpike to I-95 to 40 as well. Then go up 19. I *think* this is the same place I stayed for MLK weekend and that seemed like a decent route to get up there.

bosco

Yeah that's the best way from the south.

Up 95, head West on 40 at Daytona, turn North on 19 in the ONF, take CR316 West at Salt Springs, then take a right at the road right before you come to the bridge (should be a sign here for the RV park) and head north for 10 miles and you're there.

An alternate route might be to keep going north at Salt Springs on 19 then after like 10 miles you can head west of FR77 (Dirt) and do some 8 or so miles of rally racing down the dirt road to the campground.

Well if thats case they screwed me and drew both out of $28 x 2. Cause we each paid $28 a night for the MLK camp out, and the lady told us that we could only set up ONE tent on the a site. I think she was just milking it because of the large group.

There is a Gator4x4 fundraiser thing on Sunday, it opens at 10, lunch is served at 12:30. It cost $10 per person to get in, which includes food and a door prize raffle ticket. Then we are having a bigger raffle for $10 a ticket.

The agenda is posted on the first post.

With as many people as are expected I think we will have to split up into 2 groups.

-One group will head out to Boston. I expect this group will be the more experienced guys and I need a volunteer to lead this ride.

-The second group will be hitting up the usual places around the campground. Eureka and rodman.

The reason that I would like to split into 2 groups is because A.) The hardcore guys are tired of the "usual" places and B.) The new guys want to be able to wheel their trucks too. Boston would be a lot of watching for them. and C.) Since I have been pimping this Saturday night dinner I'll be leading the trail rides for the new guys so I can stay in the area.

Don't get me wrong You are all adults and can wheel where ever you want I am just suggesting two options.

Sunday is a free for all. Some will be heading home. Some will wheel some in the forest. Some will head to Boston, I plan on it.

Also Gator 4x4 is having a club fund raising event that I will be attending Sunday around lunch.

http://gator4x4.com/

Someone please volunteer to lead the Boston trip on Saturday, Keep in mind you'll need to watch out for the novice drivers while you are out there.

I plan to be there Friday afternoon, 2 or 3pm at latest. I don't know Mondex, Eureka, or Rodman, will anyone be there who knows where these places are? I'd love to set up camp real quick and hit a few trails Friday. I can't remember how the cell phone coverage is up there in ONF, but perhaps if we have a volunteer trail leader for each day that person could post their phone number so that whenever people show up they can call and find out where people are.

well i want to wheel the easier stuff and also hit up boston. ill chicken out of that new trail again for sure, but the rest im down for. i also agree on the split into group things esp cuz we had like 8 trucks at boston last time and that was basically its limit (as far as i could tell) unless we would have people wheeling the new trail and the old stuff but somehow not crossing paths. but groups=gold

p.s. not trying to hijack so all i need is yes or no answer. i think it was bosco that wanted my stock CAT-BACK (no cat included) do you still want it because ill bring it to the takeover and you can take it then?
