So I pulled me rear axle shaft to replace the rear seals and wheel bearing and something interesting happened. When I removed all the brake parts and took off the four backing nuts I slid the axle shaft out. Well, the first thing I expected to see was the wheel bearing. It wasn't sitting in the end of the axle tube as I expected it to be, it was stuck on the end of the axle shaft. I thought it was pressed into the axle tube and the shaft slid into it, not the other way around. Yogi, since you know so much about this can you shed some light onto the situation. I did see the inner seal and it looked perfect, so I think the oil is getting by the bearing somehow

Sure enough, Toyota presses this bearing to the end of the axle shaft.
Here's a write-up that should apply yo TACO's as well.
Good Luck!!

Yup, bearing is pressed onto axle shaft.
While the seal may look good it is leaking. Every one that I have ever replaced (due to leaking) looked fine - and the leaking stopped afterwards ;)

Alright, next question. Since I don't have ABS anymore, can I take that ABS gear and collar off and not put it back on? I would think it really serves no function if the ABS is disabled. I did notice that the collar had a small score in it where it looked like it might have rubbed on something. Anyway, I would like to press it off and not have to worry about pressing it back on. Oh, and BTW, getting that clip off with the ABS shit in the way is a PITA big time. Does anyone know a place near the airport that won't rape me to press the collar and bearings on/off?
Later,
Nate
I think it needs to be there to act as a spacer. My truck did not come with ABS but my axles still have the tone rings.
