Supercharged donughts in 2wd with the locker on. Don't worry, insurance totalled it and I think I'm going to get more money than I owed. I wish I were drunk or something so I'd have a good excuse. I'm glad I didn't style my hair that day though, since I just put it on the roof anyway.

stu
10-16-2006, 11:00 PM
No, I'm going to get something cheaper that I can beat up and has more room. I really loved my Taco, but I also really learned to love 4 wheeling, so I'd like to get a little more serious.

I can pick up a Land Rover of almost the same year with around 80-100k miles and pay almost half the price. However, as much as I LOVE Land Rovers, I know that they can't come any where close to the reliability of a Toyota. So, I'm thinking about picking up like a 95-96 Discovery I or II with like 120k for around $5,000.

I'm really surprised that none of you have openly called me a dumbass or anything yet. Thanks for that.

sexy.taco
10-16-2006, 11:13 PM
I'm nicer than that....

ONE WORD OF ADVISE: DON'T GET A LAND ROVER
I had a 2002 Disco series II SE back in... well, 2002. Anyhow, I went through like 2 rear diffs, 2 transfer cases and a radiator in like 26k miles... Your going to be throwing a lot of money into maintence... don't get me wrong the rover wheeled pretty well for a stock rig, but... reliability SUCKED!!!

Go for like an FJ80. The older land cruisers with solid axles! If you want something like a bigger SUV with some reliability! Just my :2cents:

Ok so your a dumbass... you happy now. I still want to wheel with you and know I don't think your a dumbass, I almost rolled my 4Runner on the hwy... lol!

What do you mean? I know I'm fine. A lot of people don't realize what insurance will actually pay for. I guess it helps that I'm a claims adjuster and know that I don't have to try and make up some elaborate story or anything. I had some dumb asses in Montana try that bullshit with me and I had to get the Special Investigations Unit involved and everything. Not only was it a huge mess, but it wasted SO much of my time. I'm still pissed at those retards.

The problem with that is that I hate old cars/trucks, or else I'd just get a first gen Bronco.

Actually, what motor do the mid-late 90's Land Cruisers come with? Are those pretty reliable? I seem to remember that they are pretty plush as well aren't they? You guys think those trucks are too big though? I'm going to look into the Land Cruisers as well after all.

sexy.taco
10-17-2006, 10:32 AM
yeah land cruisers have been pretty plush for a while, outside of the new FJCs. But that's just my recommendation. They run an inline 6 that seems to be really strong. Shawn (ActionJackson) has an FJ80, he seems to really like it. They come with solid from and rear axles so all you have to do is lift it!

Check out Shawn's (Action Jackson) website. Yes, those are 40's. Yes, that is some SICK flex.

For Landcruiser questions, your best bet is to call or stop in at Slee Offroad in Golden.

stu
10-17-2006, 12:23 PM
The main problem I'm seeing right now with Land Cruisers is that people want too much for them. If I could find one with decent miles for $10k then we'd be in business. I was looking on Autotrader and people seem to be a bit too proud of their trucks.

RedRunnertc
10-17-2006, 12:30 PM
Ummmm - it's called "resale value" and is highly connected with reliability. The reason Land rovers are cheap is, well, because they're cheap! People are tired of fighting with the reliability or trying to get out of it before they get stranded somewhere...

I wonder what it would take to find a double cab, SFA, diesel Hilux and have it imported...

stu

well you get what you pay for that's all I have to say! Land Cruisers are Toyotas flagship in a way! The Avalon is technicially Yotas flagship, but the cruisers cost a hell of a lot more. The Land Cruiser is basically a lexus. The V8 (2UZ-FE) came out in the current model. There is no trim line with the cruisers, they all come loaded, nav if standard in them now. But all Yotas are expensive used compared to other brands... but its your truck, your perogative and you'll have to live with the consequences of the rig!

there have been times where people have done something on a trail.... then lied completely to the insurance company and then posted pictures and told what actually happened on the web. some companies are more dick than others and they would reject the claim and file for insurance fraud because the reason for the claim wasn't the real reason for repairs. but if you told them thats what you were doing and they totalled it and said here is your check then youre fine.....

AK98Taco

The problem with the solid axle Cruisers is they only come with straight sixes, which are gas hogs.
The problem with the V8 Cruisers is the IFS; they are also gas hogs, but they have good power.

They are all top-heavy, gas-guzzling school buses, but one of the sweetest Lexus rigs I've ever worked on was a '97 LX450 with factory lockers front and rear. What a great vehicle.

Yeah, I've actually had a claim where they were 4 wheeling and did all this damage to the vehicle, but for some reason made up some completely bullshit story. I got Special Investigations involved and it turned into a big mess. I wish more people understood insurance, it's really not all that difficult. A lot of my friends didn't realize that'd be covered, so they would ask me what I was going to say. I told them all the same thing, "I'm going to tell them that I was doing donughts and flipped the truck, because that's what happened."

your 23, said it all right there.

as for the insurance... just cause u are an adjuster that learned everything from the company you work for (who wrote the book you read), doesnt mean you know anything. After another 10 years in the industry you might know one or two things.

Learn how to drive, handle the power you paid someone to install, and be responsible on the trail.

I have a lot more to say, but will leave it at that. have fun looking for a civic.

stu
10-18-2006, 04:51 PM
You guys can bitch all you want, but what I've done will have zero effect on you. Since your singling out my age, I'm going to go ahead and assume that I'm a different age bracket all together as you are, so even if what I did effected rates (but it doesn't so it doesn't matter), it wouldn't effect your rates because you are in a different age group than I am. None of this is worth talking about though, because like I mentioned, it doesn't effect you what so ever. It won't even effect me.

I can drive just fine, and this accident had nothing to do with power and you know it. You should be embarassed that you even opened your mouth in this thread.

As far as Civics are concerned, I've already been there and done that. I had a moderately fast 1990 Integra that I boosted the ever loving shit out of. I grew to really dislike the import car and wanted to try something new. 4 Wheeling is much more fun. Like all car groups though, there are still more know-it-all, dickhead, brand name fan boys than there ought to be.

I'll post what it will cost me to retain the truck tomorrow in case anyone is interested in buying the whole thing to make a trail rig out of it. I talked to my guy down at Klode and he estiamted that the truck would realistically go for 5-6k at the auction. If I can retain it for less than that, I'll consider keeping it to sell as a whole for anyone who is interested.

2002 V6 factory installed supercharger. 63,XXX miles. not smoked in, normal wear and carpets and seats, normal door dings on body (one that I can think of), no accidents except this one. All the 60k mile maintanence was done. Fabtech adjustable coils in the front for a 3" lift. Add a leaf in the rear for 3" lift. Big O Big Foot tires. I don't know the offset on the wheels but I could find out.

I'll let you all know when I get a new truck, I think I'm going to stay with Toyota since I can't really beat their quality in any other vehicle. Thanks for any assistance or pointers you guys have ever given me. :)

Ric
10-18-2006, 05:01 PM
but what I've done will have zero effect on you but it does, this is all over the internet now, and doing donuts in, on or around the trail sends a bad sign about the off-road community. thats how trails get closed. I myself love all the trails that we have, and would like it, if my kids would be able to wheel the same trails.
and yes, Ive done my share of donuts, but i did them in a school parking lot on snow days, i knew the parking lot was smooth, level and had snow, nothing to catch you and flip you over, we all go throught that stage, just please, respect the land/trail. lets keep them open, and if you do something stupid, dont post the pics online, the tree huggers love this stuff.
now go out and get the Cruiser, and lets all wheel.

jrizman
10-18-2006, 05:09 PM
okay dude, u know it all. I suffered just like every other male cause of accidents caused by young drivers who lack experience.
cars.com:
"Because they're statistically more liable to get in an accident, young adults also wind up paying 25 to 50 percent more"

WHAT? you cant handle the power you have in that truck, thus when you were doing donuts you lost control and flopped. What do you have 15K miles under your belt, in a rig that you dont even own?! If you could drive just fine, then you would have assessed the situation, realized that burnouts were not a smart idea and thus avoided the situation all together. No skin off my back, you obviously havent learned anything from what happened, cause youll just 'write it off to insurance' and move on.

"it wont even effect me" maybe thats the problem, maybe you should have to... maybe every driver who is on the cell phone who gets in an accident should have some reprocussions, then maybe we wouldnt get in accidents every 21 seconds or whatever it is...
:soapbox:

i dont know you or anything about you, but i know you used poor judgement and have a lot to learn about off roading, vehicle insurance, and responsibility. You were singled out cause you made a mistake and maybe others can learn from what you did and not be in your situation. Hopefully you learn from what happened and try to make better decisions, and help your friends make them too, next time. I hope everything works out for you, good luck and be safe.

stu
10-18-2006, 05:33 PM
You're taking this all the wrong way. I never once said that what I did wasn't in poor judgement. I know it was, it was my very first though when I was laying on my face on the roof of my truck in a bunch of broken glass. I had just done some donughts about three minutes before and didn't catch anything, and it was relatively smooth. The second time I was actually considering the bumpy landscape seconds before I rolled. I honestly think that part of the problem was that the first few spins I did were very tight so I was basically just rotating my tail around. The second time around I was making a wide arc and it ultimately cost me my truck.

Let's talk about respecting the trail. For who ever is familar with this trail, the part I flipped my truck at was where it opens up to a large part where there is a small mud puddle. I wasn't off trail or tearing anything up unnecessarily.

I understand that things like this can cast a bad shadow for people in the motor sport, which is why I'm not letting the flaming bother me much. I knew this was coming. You can't do anything reckless without taking it in the ass from strangers.

I'd also like to address my non-chalant attitude about the whole incident. My friends were surprised that I wasn't upset at the time of the accident. I even made the comment that I bet an outsider would just assume that I'm some spoiled rich kid who's parents bought the truck and would just buy another one. Such is not the case. This is the nicest (by far) vehicle I've ever been able to purchase on my own and I had to live a lot less extravigantly to pay for it. I had already accepted the fact that I could be facing a gap of a few thousand dollars between what I owed and what they offered. That's okay though, since it's just money. What it ultimately boils down to is that I'm glad that I wasn't hurt, and that I didn't have any passengers. I'm not sure whether I would have had the same wild hair up my ass with a passenger. I'd like to hope not, but you never know.

I'd like to clarify the comment about not affecting me. I totalled this truck 28 days into my policy, which almost guarantees that they will cancel my insurance. However, I know the situation well enough to purchase another policy in time to avoid a rate increase for at least however long my next policy term with the new company is (in this case 6 months). Please don't tell me that I need to understand auto insurance as I've forgotten more about personal auto insurance than most people will ever know about it. If I were to sit around and wait for this policy to cancel, I would for sure be facing raised premiums for the next three years, and I'm sure I'll see them a little later.

It could be argued that it'd be more embarassing to roll a truck while you are actually wheeling since things usually happen a lot slower and things are a little more preventable, but I won't go there because I assumed the risk before hand and knew what I was getting into.

Lastly, part of the reason I sound so happy about this (and I am) is because this will be enough money to pay off all my debt and for the time being I can relax a hair about my financial situation. This was a great learning experience for many people than just me, so watch how easily you throw your misguided opinions around about who learned what.

Put me on the list for buying the trashed taco....I have a white 02 x-cab and may need some parts soon.

Thanks

Dear MODS! please close this whining Fawkin thread!!! all it is, is a bunch of people bitching about something we've all done: Doughnuts...Maybe not all of us rolled our rig! It's unfortunate it happened and a good thing no one got hurt. but after reading 3 pages of flaming this guy who already admits making a dumb mistake, let's give it a Fawkin rest.............end rant...

Peace Out!!!! :welder:

What oil? If you're looking at the wet spot in front of the truck that wasn't oil. I'm pretty sure it was actually washer fluid. You can pretty easily see in the picture that it is too light to be oil.

We put a cat food jug underneath the power steering pump where there was some leakage. Then one of the guys filled it with sand after we pushed the truck out of the way when we came back for it.

isnt where it happened, actually a "road" or "street" so insureance would have to take care of it anyways, Im a right ?
I thought that part of Yankee Hill was a county road. im not sure

To my knowledge, it doesn't matter whether you are on a road or not. Parking lots are private property and not part of the public road system but are still covered by insurance. You could wreck in a field, on the beach, or into a lake and your car should still be covered. Yankee Hill does start out as a road, but where I rolled, was just a large open dirt area (with a little mud hole) that wouldn't be considered a "road" anyway. More of a parking lot, even though it is technically neither.

Stu, glad you're alright. Tough losing a Taco though, I went a month without mine while it was being repaired after my daughter laid it on its side along the interstate a couple three years ago.

Thanks for your guy's kind words on here.

I just got off the phone with the total loss lady and they final, official offer is $20,100.00. She didn't calculate a retain by owner amount. I told her I probably wouldn't, but I was curious since I've had so much interest in the truck.

thanks mols. I appreciate it. you're right, Thomas has been around a long time. But I don't think seniority excuses condescension or rudeness, even regarding cases of stupidity (which, by the way, is subjective). I guess that, by that token, there's no excuse for my own rudeness. I apologize.

AK98Taco, you're a lurker. You appear on this forum only when the opportunity arises to boost your own ego. Did somebody scare you off of the national forum? Maybe somebody there caught you in the act of attempting this condescending motherly bullshit on somebody else. I'm not impressed.

Go search my posts on this forum. Most of them are helping people out, but whatever you want to think.

Still angry about that thread about shooting stuff in the desert? I am pretty sure I apologized for getting out of line.

I come across as a cocky, know-it-all, punk kid a lot of the time, I know that. Really just trying to help, but sometimes the attitude gets in the way.
