Bruce Newton at drive.com.au just reported on Toyota's next-generation LandCruiser, caught testing in southern Europe. Although there was the usual heaping helping of black disguise cladding (do they celebrate Halloween in Europe?), the new model's more rounded styling shown through. The newer LandCruiser certainly looks larger than the current model too, despite the slump in large SUV sales and projections. But even though gas price hikes have put a scare in the market, Toyota has an ace up its sleeve. A diesel V8.

A powerful V8 turbo-diesel engine is expected to be one of the available powerplants, a first for Toyota. With a displacement of 4.5 liters and a pair of turbochargers, it should be good for more than 200kW (268 hp) and, 650Nm (479 ft-lbs.) of torque. That's a huge improvement over the current I6, which rates 151/357. This new V8 may make its way under the hood of the Tundra, rumor has it. A new Aisin six-speed automatic transmission should also appear on this SUV. And while it will be bigger than the current 'Cruiser, weight is expected to hold steady around the current model's 2710kg (5975 lbs). The LandCruiser replacement will be a body-on-frame with double-wishbone front and live axle rear-end to continue the tradition of outstanding off-road ability.

If thats the case they need to get the new sulfur standards in check before bringing that thing to the states.

You might want to research about the evolution of global diesel standards...

Only 268/479? Seems pretty weak for a turbodiesel....so much for the 600hp/800ftlbs rumors or whatever it was that was floating around earlier?

For those who are interested, here's a little info on the new ULSD and a simple answer as to why why the new US standards will make it easier, not harder, for overseas diesel engines to be brought in the US- basically, our new standard is their old standard.

Not to much of a suprise IMO because toyota's #'s have always been a bit behind other car manuf. but it is a diesel, so im sure there will be a HUGE aftermarket of performance parts.

shit are you serious? 600hp/800ftlbs that would be an animal of a truck,if the rumors are true. i thought the dodge was a beast. But 268/479 aint too bad imo.

yeah but these numbers are waaaaaay behind domestic trucks. For the landcruiser it is still great. But for the tundra, it sucks as it will still not be truly competitive. Also, Nissan is planing on a diesel motored fullsize. It will be interesting to see what happens there. hate to say it, but Nissan has had an edge over toyota recently. But, I would still buy a yota!

Was there not rumor of this being one of the engines from their commercial Hino Lineup?

Cool, I wonder what the price will be? Instead of $60,000 this one might be closer to $70,000. Why don't they put a diesel in a vehicle we can all afford, like the Tacoma?

Shoot i hope that Toyota jumps on having a diesel in there full size trucks befor nissan does, that Titan looks goofey to me., a brand new tundra cost ~35-40K right? and diesels most of the time cost more than a Gas truck. Thats guna be an expensive truck if they do make it,shoot id probably buy it tho/
