Ohio Approves Smoking Ban
POSTED: 11:25 am EST November 8, 2006
UPDATED: 12:19 pm EST November 8, 2006
Change is in the air at many Ohio businesses next month as voters approve a tough statewide smoking ban.
The smoking ban applies to all buildings outside the home except for tobacco shops, designated hotel rooms and enclosed areas in nursing homes.
The new law will prohibit smoking in Ohio bars, restaurants, and workplaces.
George Sergakis, the owner of Yorgo's restaurant in Steubenville, said he agrees with the new law and said if everyone is banned nobody is going to lose business.
Jeff Blumenauer, Associate Manager of Applebee's restaurant in Steubenville, said he doesn't think the elimination of designated smoking areas will hurt his business.

Smoking Ban Passes, Takes Effect In December
POSTED: 9:57 am EST November 8, 2006
UPDATED: 10:10 am EST November 8, 2006
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Change really is in the air at many businesses around the state.
Voters Tuesday approved a tough statewide smoking ban, snuffing out a looser alternative that was backed by tobacco company RJ Reynolds.
The new law takes effect in early December. It prohibits smoking in Ohio bars, restaurants and workplaces.
Leaders of the winning campaign said the strict smoking ban will improve the health of Ohioans by protecting them from secondhand smoke.

Wow, while I don't smoke and will benefit from not having to inhale fumes from nearby smokers when frequenting bars and restaurants I kind of feel like this may be giving goverment to much control. Why not leave it up to the business owners to make there own decisions. I can't recall anyone ever forcing me to enter a smoky building. If I know certain places are smoky I just avoid them. It's not that hard.

Makes you wonder what's next.

while I also stayed away from smoky places... I found out back in highschool... going to perkins, regardless where you sat, you reaked of smoke when you left,... likewise with bowling alleys...

I know what your saying. There's few bars in the Akron area that I don't really notice it while I'm in there but when I get in my truck the next morning (after it's sat all night closed up) it stinks pretty bad. But I've pretty much figured out which places to avoid as well as which places I only go to in the summer months when they have windows / doors open or outdoor seating (where available).

Also I believe Summit County has had a No Smoking ban in effect for bars & restaurants for over a year now, however the city of Akron (where most residents & business's are located) was somehow able to exempt itself from this ban

Yeah Yeah  I am a smoker as you all know and try to stay away from folks that don't when I do. Half or most the time any more don't even eat in the smokeing section at a restraunt becuase of steph and well I can go a hour with out a smoke. As for bars ah come on what do you think is going to happen there. I know they can get bad with smoke to the point I can't stand it but heck just pas a rule for increased ventalation or something. Oh well maybe this will be the last straw and I might quite but won't that hurt the econimy from losses in the tax revenue from cigerette sales?

Maybe this ban will help youngsters to stay away from smoking in the future. Maybe just wishful thinking.

I hadn't even thought of the hit our economy will take when cigarette sales decline. I'm sure they will make up for it by increasing the tax rates on everything else. I've just always looked at it as nobody's forcing anybody to use stores/restaurants that allow smoking. You always have the choice not to go into those places.

But on the other side, now it may be easier to convince several people I know to quit smoking.

Georgia's had this ban for a few years, the only exempt are bars (>51% alcohol sales).

Its great! For non smokers anyway :D

I frequent TN and wish they'd do the same, eating out in TN, it really slaps you in the face when the ask smoking or non? And even after sitting in a non smoking section you're still choking on fumes. Makes me appreciate the GA ban.

I think CA was the 1st, and I think NY has had it for a few years as well...
I don't know all the states, but they are adding up...
Hooray beer, I mean hooray "cleaner" air and no smelling like smoke after dinner :woot:

Fear not guys & girls. Your favorite bars will just become "Private Clubs" that will probably charge you some sort of membership fee to enter. We had the same sort of thing to skirt tough liquer laws in North Carolina. If you weren't a "Member" you could buy a "Trial Membership" for a buck or two.

I think it's great. Nothing sucks like sitting in a restaurant like Applebees and having to inhale fumes from the smoking section when you are in the non smoking section. Something I pay even more attention to when I have my daughter with me.

As for giving more power to the government...didja vote?

I am not sure the private club thing will work... if this "private club" has any employees, smoking is not allowed... perhaps if all the employees are club members, then get paid only on tips :dunno:

so...does anything seem any different to everyone? only difference for me is having to go outside to smoke at work. several bars in this area still allow it. did this help anyone quit? didn't for me. just dusting off an old topic.

Yes, I see a big difference!
when I go out to dinner (often) when I am in ohio (not as often), I no longer have to take a shower and wash my clothes when I get home to rid myself of this horrible smell which used to be all over myself and clothes.

...to those of you who don't notice because you smoke, I am referring to the smoke residue which ends up within hair and clothes when in contact with a smokey atmosphere (yes, this includes what used to be a "nonsmoking section")

i doubt any of you have inhaled any of my smoke. i don't understand why they havn't been outlawed?? if they are SO bad and hurt SO many people, then why not make them illegal? oh yeah...someone has to pay the tax to build new schools! :) the ban hasn't really bothered me. i don't drink, but they aren't going to quit selling alcohol at bars and clubs where someone can get smashed and t-bone me on their way home. i have always been as courteous as possible when it comes to smoking in public, not because i HAD to, but because i remember how much i hated it when i was a kid. seriously though...why legislate to ban them...do ME a favor and make them illegal to purchase...then i'll have to quit. i just don't want to hear any whining when alcohol is the new devil.

note: this is not intended to piss anyone off or start sheet, just my side of the fence.

I have some friends that have quit as a result and 1 buddy that went from a pack a day to maybe bumming one off somebody once a month. I’m not on the make them illegal ban wagon I don’t care that much. But they are bad I personally know people that have throat cancer and my Uncle that died a few months ago in Columbus was a heavy smoker. I saw him before he died he had no lung function left on 100% oxygen, steroids just laying in bed fighting for every breath. It took him 10 mins to tell me to never start smoking he didn’t want to see me end up like this. My take is they are like a lot of things when taken or done in excess there are consequences….
