Let's see...at this pace I should be ready to roll in time for AzRocks07
Time to start grinding, but I do have a question....
Is there any prefered way of adding back some support to motor mounts?

Awesome... I just weld the motor mount where it was cut. Then I add a pice of 1/4" flat steel to the top for a reinforcement. Ive never seen anybody have problems with the mounts.

na, a piece of angle iron-cut it to fit, zap it, you could box the opens ends too. Or a 3-4 links of chain welded. Looks good Mark!

The grinding is almost finished. In the side by side comparison (what?) I now know the flap discs are 3-4 times faster at removing material than the stone discs...making them well worth the extra cost :)

Josh got me to use wheels from the welding supply store. Those lasted nearly twice as long as the ones from Lowes, cleared material better, and they were cheaper too. I like the flap wheels for removing the last bits along the frame.
ya think 1/4" is nessasary? the mount is made of 3/16.

Prolly not "Nessasary".................but the frames are pretty thin, so it doesn't hurt...............mines boxed with 1/4" and it still flexes!

That was my thinking until last night. The 36 grit flaps were soooo much faster (than stone) at removing the heavy stuff.

My front spring hanger was tacked on, so last night I hung the springs to see where the shackle end met the frame. Both springs are shifted to one side by about 1.5-2". I swapped the springs side for side, they still are off the same direction. Shane and Dave came over and we swapped the springs end for end, same result. I cut the tack welds and moved the xmember/hangers and that improved it but....it still takes a bit of a pull to get the springs were they should be. A measurement from the rear axle housing to the bolt in the hanger is identical side to side. I'm thinking it can only be the truck's frame is tweaked or the hanger isn't made correctly. If anyone thinks of another possibility for me to check...please let me know
I still need to make some plates for the shackle hanger, once that's done I may cut off the front hanger and see if I can find what's causing this.
p.s. Shane & Dave....THANKS for your help!

I took off the hanger and made some crude measurements after clamping the x-member to the plate. I was just looking for the difference between the two holes in each hanger, to see if the hanger was rotated. The difference in the holes on one side was .010" (which is meaningless), but the other side was at least .080" which could account for what I was seeing. A replacement is in the works from Front Range (unfortunately they didn't have another in stock, so it has to be made), but it won't be here for this weekend :(
FROR said they will be checking the alignment on all future ones with a rod through both hangers :kewl: because their jig only locates from the outermost holes.

Mark, did you get the steering box mounted yet?.........I can't tell in that "Super Secret Stepside SAS Silhouette!" :D
No, I was waiting to see the axle in there first, to help make sure everything will clear. The inner fender is 'hacked' and the plates are ready.

Thanks, but anything 'clean' in that pic was most likely made by Front Range. My welding is so hideous the guy who'll be welding the suspension stuff on has told me his 10 year old is better than me :lmao: :banghead:

I haven't had anything picture worthy. The perches and hangers are welded in place, just painted everything. Now have to assemble the axle and see were the steering box will go. With the weight of the truck sitting on the springs, the caster is 5 degrees and the shackle angle is 18 degrees.

Kinda swamped at work...no time to post stuff  Tie rod didn't have enough clearance at the leaf springs because I used some Ruff Stuff spring perches that were pretty tall. (Of course I didn't even think this might be a problem so the perches were fully welded when I found the interference  ) I thought I could use some OTT steering arms that were a 2" rise, but that was only 1/4" higher than what I had. Cut off the perches, ordered a new pair from FROR. Also using upgraded steering arm studs with larger nuts....so now the 19mm socket doesn't fit in the recesses on the arms like the 17mm socket did...they'll need to be .100" larger :aahg: Just minor details :xbeer2:

Thats why I always use the 1" parts mike steering arm spacers. That way I know I will have enough room no matter what. I used the sky arms that were taller, and the raised parts mike knuckles, combined with the 1" spackers. Plenty of room even running .250 wall steerings rods.

There should be no doubt I'm the slowest person to do a simple leaf spring axle swap :xzzz: :xbeer2: :xbeer1:
I still have some issues to be worked on but I wanted to see it sitting on it's own weight so I threw the Tacoma tires on it today.
Here's some things it still needs:
Hard brake lines run down the axle housing
Bump stops
Shock mounts
Panhard bar mount
Wiring to tell the transfer case to shift to 4WD (that signal came from the front diff that's now gone)
Winch bumper with radiator skid
Anyway, here's the latest pics:
The new steering cooler is on the right side in this pic (tranny cooler is on the left)
http://members.cox.net/mgriese/OriginalPictures/Dscf3361-1.jpg
There's one of the temporary brake hoses zip-tied to the frame. I did this one on the outside because I think the headers will melt the zip-tie ;)

http://members.cox.net/mgriese/OriginalPictures/Dscf3366-1.jpg

Kirk has the articulating (is that a word?) ones so that probably added a couple inches?

Yeah, the revolver shackle kind. Each truck is different, some guys are running ginormously long shackles.

Uhm, not sure. Mine have a good arc to them, I don't think the truck they came off of ever had anything in the bed. If they flatten out like Eric's, then I may need to change it up.

  just to turn around to put the rear lift on. I have a big leak in the POS TRD headers-collector flange that I have to try to re-assemble because it wasn't there before.
I haven't done anything with the wheels yet, the wheel mounting surface is only about 5/8" below the caliper ribs so there should be some combination of grinding and 1/4" wheels spacers that should fix it. Wes (I think) posted on the national board that american racing baja with a 20mm offset would fit (just an FYI)

Hope so. :) We need a few more NEWB sas'd trucks out on the trails. This year may have an equal amount of Solid Axle and IFS trucks on the trails. Weeeeee for AzRocks 07 !!!!!!!
I would be surprised if there where more sacs than ifs.

I'll likely be on the easy trails running 33" tires and no front bumper/radiator skid...sooooo you probably won't see me wheeling
Won't have pics until tomorrow....but TOY BOX AUTO (http://www.toyboxauto.com/home) stayed late to finish my front shock hoop install so I now have the front shocks mounted :xpimp: :xrocker: :D ;) :xbeer1: :kewl:

I'll get to check it out at camp if nothing else.
I might run Hackleberry on Friday just because I've never ran it before and it will be something different.
