: 1992 Toyota Pickup 5.0 302 Conversion

Title says it all,from 4-banger to EFI 5.0 . Does anyone know where to start? What I need to buy? Do I have to buy a new trans or can i buy a bellhousing adapter? I know I will have to buy new motor mounts, radiator, harness, stuff like that but does anyone have any recommendations?

Also in need of a toyota truck/4runner body, if anyone knows where one is.

I just thought it may bet better to go with a ford motor, since the distributor is in the front, less hassle, but what do yall recommend for conversion, Chevy or Ford?

i'd go ford, but im a ford guy. there's a HUGE aftermarket for the 350 and they can be found for cheap.

Were building up my brothers truck. SBC, TH350, dual toy cases. We are putting the radiator in the bed though.

If I may be so bold as to offer a few suggestions:

Advanced Adapters has been making plenty good stuff for a long time.

If you go with EFI [which is strongly recommended], make sure to get the computer with the donor engine. Getting the harness is also beneficial, although they can be had from folks like Howell, as can custom PROMS if you decide to elimate anything such as EGR, VSS, etc.

Generally speaking, the Toyo trannies aren't up to the task of the increased torque; I would recommend something stronger. Spend the $$$ on the tranny instead of an adapter.

Speaking of $$$, plan on spending at least as much on the install as the donor engine. I spent $2500 back in 1986 installing a $250 engine, and that was doing 100% of the work myself.

I have always been a Chevy guy versus Ford; have you considered a 4.3L V-6? They can easily make as much or more torque than the Ford 5.0 due to the longer stroke, and two less cylinders is a whole lot easier to fit under the hood.

The biggest problem with engine conversions into Toyo mini-trucks seems to be insufficient cooling. Toyo's just don't offer alot of grill area. Get the biggest radiator you can fit.

I have an 88 4runner I'll sell you for about 1k, body and interior is in great shape, though the 3.slow engine is locked up.

I think Murderman has a point about the transmissions. The 5.0L in my 93 Bronco is only rated at about 200 hp, but the torque is rated at over 280. I don't know if a stock Toyota transmission is built and designed for that much torque. Maybe go with a T-18 Ford manual transmission (they're relatively small, but strong and simple) or if you want an auto, go with a C6 - (super strong, lots of 'em available, simple and cheap to rebuild, kind of big, but not as big as a Ford E4OD). Just be aware that there are two kinds of 4wd C6 auto trannies - one for big blocks and one for small blocks (5.0L is a small block). You can't really switch out the bellhousings on the C6s, so make sure you get one for a small block if you decide to go that route.

If you go with a C6 (or any other Ford tranny), you may need an adapter from Advance Adapter to hook up the Toyota t-case, or you could go with a Ford t-case - NP205 being relatively smaller and practically indestructible, but with a low range gear ratio that's not that great compared to other t-cases. Otherwise, a Ford BW 1345 is still kind of strong and not as big and heavy as the Ford BW 1356. All Ford t-cases bolt right up to Ford 4wd trannies. Just make sure you get the correct linkage for the t-case/trans combo you end up with if you go that route.

As for the 5.0L, get one with MAF for more power. Also, truck 5.0's and the bigger 351W's are notorious for minor rear main seal leaks after awhile, so be prepared for that, but otherwise they're decent, plentiful engines with lots of parts available, just not as many parts as the Chevy 350.

As for the Chevy 4.3L V6 Murderman mentioned, that sounds like another good option that might fit better than the 5.0L.
