Picked up a new toy today. 2001 Honda 400ex. It looks a little ruff, but just like any Honda, it runs like a champ. I am planning to tear it down to the frame next week to do a thorough inspection, then clean/paint everything and fix whatever needs fixed.

Got it tore down. Man this thing was abused. Needs basically all the bearings replaced in the chassis. And the paint has flaked off of every weld on the frame, so this thing either saw some serious air, or some serious trees pretty often.

I don't plan on touching the engine. It runs good so I don't see the need. The only thing I plan to do is check the valves and clean the carb up good.
Got it all back together, and it looks new.
What I had to get:
Rear wheel bearings
Front wheel bearings
Steering stem bearings
Rear shock linkage bearings
Rear brake rotor
Rear brake pads
All the fender mounting brackets
What is left to get:
Front rims and tires (one is the stock rim the other is a bent up Douglas) I already ordered a set of ITP T-9s with Kenda tires.
Parking brake mechanism for rear caliper.
There were three cracks in the frame, not bad but still cracked. I welded those up after I sandblasted it then painted it. I am going to wait on replacing the shifter shaft, I hate the thoughts of tearing down a running motor just to replace it. So the temp solution was to tack weld it on until maybe next winter. I ended up having to go one up on the main jet and four up on the pilot jet. The genius that had it before put on a K&N filter and a DG race exhaust and didn't rejet it at all. I also put the stock handle bars from my XR on it to get rid of the ape hangers that were on it.

I got a new rear tire for christmas, so I guess I'll have to quit being lazy and actually take my bike apart...
although, I don't expect any bad bearings due to the lack of riding... :rofl:
