View Full Version : Bye Bye Hackberry

Well if you read the post on our Hackberry/ powerline run today, it was likely the last ever through the campground entrance. Though the rest of the loop is still open, it must now be accessed either via the 177 at Apache leap, or the road past the campground by the mine might still be open, we didn't check it out. As we were coming back up, heavy trucks and workers were setting up another drill rig right in the middle of what used to be the trail at the top of the first big downhill section, before you get to the slick rock sheer face. From the campground to that point, the trail has been graded, and a large clearing made where the drill rig is setting up. According to the workers we asked there, it will likely be closed come monday. :( To me it already looked closed as they had equipment there and plastic rolled out that they told us to just drive over becasue we had to to get out. :dunno: So if people desire to run the slick rock face, it will be a detour and not part of the normal loop, as the trail is closed just above it. Seth mentioned maybe getting people to ask the mining company to cut a small bypass around their mining operation, since they seem to have taken over the area. Its a good idea, I'd be interested in seeing what could be done to try and work something out. It hurts to see such a beautiful area wasted all in the name of the alimighty :2cents:

CRAP. We new this was just a matter of time. It sucks that they "conveniently" picked the trail to put the the drilling rig on.

Just went to Hackberry for some rock climbing over Christmas. The road up about 1/2 mile from Oak Flat campground at the cattle guard is still open and can get you back there, although a lot of it has been blasted for mining equipment. They haven't blasted the fun cruxy section that switch backs down to the cow pond and windmill though, so there's still some fun wheelin' on it. It looked like the other road by the windmill is open too, which comes out on the 77 by the huge strip mine.

Hey Shawn what about the downhill right after the cattle gaurd? the hill with the old truck? is it ok?

I think I know the section you're talking about. Is that where that long steep slab is and that old rolled truck is after the fence if you go in through Oak Flat? That section is off a different part of the trail and we didn't go that way. There's a road that's been blasted that leads from the road we took to that slab, but we didn't check it out. So, I don't know if that section has been blasted or not, but I would suspect it hasen't since they blasted a road from the other direction. Plus, it's a lot less work for them to go in that way then try to blast the slab section.

Yea when I was out there it was at the top of that hill (the way Tacoma guys normally go in :D ) that they (minners) were setting up a drilling rig.
They said that they were gona close that enterance but no one has gone up there since to see if it is still open.

I don't...............I say they are 39's most of the time.............especially since that is closer to the actual diameter of them anyway!

...........but if you want to run 37.345's be my guest.........I won't stop you!!! :D

Why not say what the tire has printed on it? We all know that even with what is printed on them they don't measure up, so why try to say they're even bigger   .
