I`m in phx & planning a southwest colorado wheelin trip. Don`t have a tow rig for my runner, so I`m driving my taco there & back. Not into BD with this truck, but I`m lockd, lifted, 33`s, and sliders.
So, ALOT of trails or cool things to see in a 7-9 day period?
Gunnison NF, Weminushe Wilderness, or La Garita Mts?? I`ve
done the Moab thing...I`m from PA-want to see trees and Colorado`s
beauty. :D
Map(s) are bitchin, if available.

Um, when are you planning to go?
Can't travel today, all the interstates are closed!

OPPS, the end of March or over the 4th of July. Yea-heard about the storm.
You guys use a 1-10 scale for trail difficulty, right? I`m in for atleast 5`s-maybe 7-8...I was looking at pics in the past events folder and I didn`t see anything really difficult. Eagle rock is a 5 or a 7? Like I said I don`t want to bang up my body, but underneath is cool :D

Most of the REALLY scenic trails will still be closed in March.

There are tons of amazing trails down in southwest colorado but really they are not accesible till mid june. I would be down for a 4th of july trip. That would be a wicked time to go...
Alot of those trails can be as hard as you make em, but a minimumj rating would be a 6 I think...
Take a look at Poughkipsee Gulch, Imogeine Pass - trails like that. Look on www.traildamage.com or www.4x4trails.net

Sweet-now that`s what I`m talkin bout! Are the trails still snow covered?-or super muddy (before July)? Ok, so over the 4th it is. DAMN, those trails are only open for 5-6 months out of the year?? Lookin at pics now...

I`m likin poughkipsee gulch, engineer & corkscrew. WOW, VERY pretty.
NICE obstacles-that`s exactly what I`m looking for. There has to be great
hunting & fishing.....I`m jealous.
I saw someone ran woodpecker & some of my local trails....whatda think?
Thanks for everyone`s help :D
VERY COOL WEBSITES!
Chinaman Gulch & carnage canyon look great, mostly likely can avoid BD there-many lines to take.

Uh I doubt you'll avoid ANY body damage on Carnage... You MUST have 35's and be locked front and rear to even run it at all.
Here are pics of my old rig running poughkipsee -

yea, that looks alittle hairy. Could you strattle that obstacle pictured? bypasses for obstacles?? Plenty of time to iron the details out :D, I looking to see CO & meet new
people.
Probably ask the other AZ guys if anyone else is interested...

I met some CO guys on a local AZ trail a couple of weeks ago, they lived ~2 hours from Moab and said there is ALL kinds of wheelin trails near them. Anyone know that area?
I`m looking at my options-I have 2 weeks+ vacation, prob will take a week in mid march and a week over the 4th.

That would be around Grand Junction, maybe up near Aspen - quite a few trails around there.
PM Guapotaco - he's the expert for that part of the state!
The 2007 Takeover will be in Farmington, NM - not far from there either.

No strattling that obstacle, unless you want to flip over backwards! But there is a bypass there if I remeber correctly...

The bypass is a steep incline with loose rocks on the left (looking at it)... the line pictures is the 2nd easiest line (that looks like the line on the right). There is one in the middle that can get kind of iffy... the line on the right is do able in a stock rig with someone with experience (saw a stock Willys or something make it up that line on like 29s)

most of those obstacles on poughkipsee we're closed this year due to accidents from what i heard,i wouldnt consider that sw colo, even though it is, that makes me think of the desert areas like durango, cortez etc.. but still close i guess, i have never been to the ouray area for wheeling, but know alot of people who go every year, i'd rather go to montrose or cortez at this point

Poughkipsee was open, muddy and wet but open... and few other were closed though because of the snow. Its hit or miss with those trails. The wheeling scenery in and around Ouray is gorgeous, but its fucking crowded on the 4th, awesome fireworks but a shit load of people...

Its my turn to be the trail newb in NorCal for a while... :p

Same area - about halfway between Grand Junction and Ouray.
Never 'wheeled down there - heard it's pretty amazing though

Here are a couple of pics form north of Montrose on the south face of Grand Mesa from August '06... Roads onto the mesa go on FOREVER!! This trail was relatively tame except for silt mud and some rough patches where the road base is worn down to granite outcroppings. Purdy views too...

Yo Chris, you sure do get around these forums...I'll put another recommendation in for any of the trails around Ouray...and the Alpine Loop area. Engineer, Poughskipee, etc.
Your truck will do nearly every trail in that area no problem, most of the trails are not difficult but the scenery more than makes up for it. I would also HIGHLY recommend doing the trip over to Lake City (east of Ouray, via Engineer Pass). Great little city, hit up the Mexican restaurant. Oh yeah, bring your fishing pole for Hansen and the Lake Fork.
Look up Mt. Shasta for a more challenging wheeling spot...

So did you decide on a date for this? I'd be up for a trip to catch up with Guapster over July 4th - though Pimp I imagine you are out for the wedding :D

I did Imogene last July. I'm looking at doing Engineer Pass this July when I go home to see my parents. They live in Montrose. There is a 4X4 shop in Montrose. If you are heading south into town it is right after the very first light in Montrose. Can't remember the name. If you hit the airport, you went too far. Great lil town though. Black Bear is above Ouray too. Never been over that one but I heard that one can eat you up and spit you out if you aren't careful.

Older posts I know, but further information on GJ trails/Montrose Trails...
GJ has some nice trails, the more popular of which 21 Road can be damaging, and is supposedly very rough this year. Billings is even moreso, you need SAS running at least 35s locked in both axles, even then, expect to beat the everliving shit out of your rig! And this is second-hand experience, but wheeling in Montrose supposedly makes Billings look silly.

I'd really like to see Billings first hand, if you ever make it down here and have room for a passenger! This summer, after I finish the last three mods on my FJ (Rear Bumper, Warn 9.5XP, Budbuilt skids next month) I plan on acquiring an old 4Runner/Taco to SAS for the more hardcore wheeling. So hopefully I'll be able to run Billings soon! ...Summer projects.
