View Full Version : Bumpstop question?

The other day I finally got around to installing bumpstops on my rig. I basically stopped the spring from any more up travel once they were flat, or slightly into negative arch. So what I ended up with was 3" of up travel, The bumpstop will then make contact, and the rubber bumpstop it self can compress another 1".
So what I was wondering, is how much up travel other peoples SAS rigs had? Does this sound about right?

Sounds dead on. Real close to what I have.

I would put my :2cents: in, but I don't have bumpstops yet...........I will however be shooting for about 5" of uptravel front and rear (I currently have about 6", but I'm all over the inner fenderwell up front and bottoming out the stock bumps on the coilovers) The rear is only limited by the chevy spring overloads (I can't bottom out nor overextend the rear shocks)

Yeah... you have coils so its different. I figured by stopping my leafs when they are flat instead of going into negative arch, I will prolong the life of them. I would think that if the leaf springs guys are running about she same lift up front, so their springs are probably arched the same, this the uptravel should be about the same. Kinda / close. I can only get 4.25 inches before my panhard hits my oil pan. So the way my bumstops are setup, 3" of uptravel before the bumps hit, 1" additional of bumstop compression. Which leaves me .25" of clearance between the panhard rod and the oil pan! hehe

Coils or not, I still need to limit my uptravel via bumpstops. Sounds like you are on the right track though by measuring compression and allowing a little slop. Might want to give yourself a little more room for error than .25" in case you take a hard blow and bottom everthing out hard..............take my word for it, it's not fun to change a cracked oilpan!!!

I only ever tapped the oil pan with my panhard a few times without bumpstops. Put a little curved dent in the oil pan. I measured the bumpstops uncompressed, then stuck them in the vise and compressed the crap out of them and they went down almost 1". I think the possability of them going past that point and then allowing the panhard to contact is very very slim. Ive been running without bumpstops since I built the truck. This is just added protection and piece of mind.
But thanks for the advice. hehe :)

Like I said.........sounds like you have it all figured out then! :)

I had never put bump stops on before. Never seen the point. But after reading alot of posts, I figured it was safer and would prolong the life of the springs. I was just unsure how people were setting them up. Not many pics on bumpstops (unless you are looking for bling airbumps)

Gottcha..........I'm kinda in the same boat.......I know I need them, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Kirk, Grumpy and Shane (off the top of my head) all have nice simple poly setups that I think would be just what you're looking for..........I am going the "Bling airbump" route in the front........the rear I may just leave as is.......chevy springs are cheap and easy to replace! ;)
so what about the rear - you get that done?
