Just wondering if anyone else is interested in checking out some of the trails and off-road areas of Wyoming? I lived in Wyoming for 5 years but didn't have a 4x4 and I remember seeing lots of areas that would have been great if I'd had a 4 wheeler to get around. Not anything harsh (my rig is totally stock and will remain that way for the forseeable future) but for example, the Great Divide Basin (AKA Red Desert) has some really unique areas of sand dunes and wierd rock formations that it would be great to just spend a weekend up there. Has anyone else 'wheeled in Southern Wyoming?

The areas I saw were a lot different from Colorado: Where we have big gnarly rocks and heart-stopping shelf roads, this is pretty much wide open desert.

Martin,
Where do you live? I will be in Rock Springs in a few weeks and we can go play by the gorge.

I have heard of vedavue for wheeling. Isn't there rock climbing up there too?

I may have a hookup at the dunes around Walden. A "friend" of mine has a family ranch in that area and offered her property to us for a little wheelin and after wheelin BBQ this summer.

I'm in Denver. Isn't the Flaming Gorge area all snowed in?

Oh, yeah, I know all about Vedauwoo. I went to school in Laramie, so Vedauwoo was one of the common playgrounds. Rock climbing for people, not wheeling, though. All the roads I've seen in that area are pretty smooth dirt roads - I even drove on them in my 4x2 Ford Ranger.

I didn't know anything about them until I read about it on the traildamage web site - interesting. I've seen the signs for the BLM lands on the road between Walden and Laramie, but I didn't realize there were sand dunes out there! Might be fun.

FWIW, there are also sand dunes in the Red Desert (AKA the Great Divide Basin) between Rawlins and Lander, not too far from the Orgeon Buttes, if you know where that is.

Anybody been to the Red Desert this winter? How much snow is up there? I remember the Shirley Basin (between Medicine Bow and Casper) used to stay covered in snow until about April!

That would be awesome. A nice area and not too crowded, unlike the I-70 Corridor which gets overrun by weekenders in the summertime.

The Walden Dunes are pretty cool in the early/later winter. They get pretty heavily snowed in though in the winter and in the summer they are crawling with ATV's and sand rails. There is a cool back way into the sand dunes that isn't hard but it is pretty.
